Fellow Pet Lovers, I wanted to share this note I received from a pet owner whose dogs have become sickened from Blue Buffalo Dog Food about 6 months ago. She is hoping to collaborate with other pet owners whose dogs and/or cats have suffered health issues because of eating Blue Buffalo pet foods. “After 10 years of feeding the Blue Wilderness line of dog food to my pets, who all got perfect bloodwork for years, 6-7 months ago all my pets became very ill. My vet kept telling me there were no recalls with this food, and there were not. Which doesn’t mean the food wasn’t contaminated.”
“I just spoke to Blue Buffalo and they are denying anything was wrong with this brand. Yet they are sending me a claim form to submit to their pet health department. I will include all the receipts over the years from where I bought this food, and vet records and bills.”
“I am having all my pets bloodwork repeated, and submit that as well. I am also going to contact the vet that is mentioned in the article. I am about to inquire about starting another class action lawsuit if I can get other pet owners who had a similar experience with this brand of food.”
“Please comment below if your pet became ill from this Blue Buffalo pet food within the past year. I know it wasn’t only my pets, my brothers’ cats became ill on this food around the same time as mine, and my mothers’ cat has been sick for months on this food.” #dogs #cats #leadpoisioning #classactionlawsuit #petfood #veterinarian #bluebuffalo #dog #cat #mydogissick #mycatissick #leadindogfood #leadincatfood

“I have been investigating Blue Buffalo pet foods for months trying to figure out what happened. I heard they shut down the class action lawsuit, but if I get any response to my public post, I will try to see what I can do about getting another lawsuit together. Either blue buffalo is denying it, or they did not know one of the ingredients from their suppliers was contaminated. Either way, my pets have all gone through hell, and so have my husband and I trying to figure this out.”
Blue Buffalo pet food has been fighting pet food recalls and class action lawsuits for over 9 consecutive years. Despite multi-million dollar settlements they are making Billions of Dollars. Their legal team continues to deny claims and they get away with selling pet food that is tainted, toxic and adulterated.
It is hard to understand why pet owners continue buying their food; in fact, Blue Buffalo’s Pet Food sales topped 1 Billion Dollars in 2016.
Here are some other related articles on Blue Buffalo from Chagrin Falls Pet and Veterinary Clinic
My Great Pyrenees has been eating Blue Buffalo for years. He has cancer in his mouth that spread across the roof of his mouth. It was too late for surgery – they were going to have to remove a ton of his nose bone to try to get it all, then reconstruct his nasal passage. And that mifht Gabe bought him a year. I couldn’t do Tat to him. He has about a month left to live now. We are keeping him as comfortable as we can, and live him non stop.
GOD BLESS PET OWNERS LIKE YOU! I WENT THRU IT WITH MY BOXER!
I gilried to give these extra cans I bought to my sister and qhen they opened them, they were all moldy on the inside. Was there ever a class action lawsuit???
We fed our dog Blue Wilderness Senior Diet back in December 2018 for about a week. During that time She began vomiting and loose stool. We are now on month 3 of trying to get her stomach back in line. She is chronically vomitting once a day and we can’t figure it out.
Her blood work is fine, but the stomach is still not. We’ve had constipation issues, even with switching her to a prescription vet food. I fully believe the issue started with that one week of her being on Blue Wilderness.
So, in fall of 2017, our boxer suddenly became ataxix (dizzy, uncoordinated) , confused, BLIND, lost muscle tone and use in his face (eyes and mouth dropping, unable to swallow properly) . It started on his left side then began to resolve only to come back on his right side. All lab tests came back normal every time until recently, when they found high protein in his urine. Which we only checked because he also started having blood in his urine as well as excessively drinking and urinating. He has slowly been gaining his stability and muscle tone as well as his eyesight coming back. Also, in the beginning of winter, our Maltese suddenly started having what I thought were seizures. It happened for about 2 weeks, 4-5 times daily then resolved. All lab tests were normal. Since reading about this lawsuit, I remember we were feeding the turkey and potato formula and for some reason I can’t recall, we switched, mid-winter, to the lamb version. Oddly enough..about the time the boxer started to get better and regain his eyesight. I just looked and we never threw out the remaining turkey kibble. If this lawsuit is real, I would like to be a part of it. I can have this turkey kibble tested and can have our vet send medical records. I just don’t know how to go about doing it.
I just bought some blue wilderness for my 15 year old Chihushua & the can exploded in my face & got all on my eyes. I am going to the ER & have them test this stuff before they kill some more peoples animals. This stuff has a smells like human faces combined or a dead person or animal. I am totally traumatized & now I read this I’d blue buffalo& reading their food has killed countless pets. Please report them to the fda, consumer reports, the FDA. These pets are like our kids & we have to stop this company from killing more pets.
My wife and I have been buying “BLUE Freedom Grain Free ‘Chicken for Small Dogs’ Dry Dog Food” for our Yorkie since he was a puppy (5 years ago). In the last 6 months, I added “BLUE Freedom Natural Grain Free Chicken for Small Dogs Wet Dog Food ” as a treat – but I have noticed his stool has been irregular, and last weekend he had diarrhea all inside my apartment, which he never does. This concerns me…I am wondering what a safer, better alternative is now?!
We had two small dogs that was fed blue buffalo also. Our pups became sick and we took them to our local vet as well as Texas Tech and Dallas pets Science Institute too. They were given the very best care available to no avail. After a long horrible road of trying to save them they died a terrible death. They said kidney failure and liver disease. As to the cause there were no answers. Thousands of dollars later I was determined to find the answer. I finally came up to their dog food ; blue buffalo. I could not get any personal at their company to listen to me and then put out alerts to Pet Smart where we bought the food. They didn’t care either. Now to see this pet action law suit I was so happy. Maybe we could be apart of that so people would listen. Our pets were sick in2012 and 2013,so this is a long history of abuse! They need to be stopped!!
This is shocking to me, I switched Seabo to Blue Buffalo foods because of there claim of losing a dog named Blue, and thinking there story was one that was born from lose of there beloved family pet. And a passion to bring a quality food to market for pet lovers that wanted a quality food for there pets. I am totally discussed with this family of animal abusers and hope they can be stopped before more pets are harmed by there greed and carelessness
Hello. I just lost a dog a day before his sixth birthday and he was on blue buffalo food. It was an aggressive cancer that took him from us way too early. Wondering if there was a connection between this food and that.
My 12 yo chi just died from aggressive cancer. It was awful. I have photos. She was on BB Chicken approx. 10 years for small dogs. My baby girl is dead. Sadly, I could not afford the high vet bills, but did borrow money for a biopsy. It came back unknown. She then went on pain meds. She did live, and quite well for 2 months. It was the last 1 1/2 weeks. A vet came to her rescue and ended her pain. I love and miss my little girl. Mom
Where is the Blue Buffalo dog food made? Is there lead in every variety?
I Have been giving my Dog BLue Buffalo for 5 years and am heartbroken. I am in the process of having my dog tested for lead. She has had a cough for 5 years, do not know if that is related. Needless to say I thought I was giving my Dog Healthy food and am very upset to learn of this.
Annette Rossotti,
Please describe the cough that your dog has. Is it a repeated hacking that ends in widening of the mouth? My dog has done this for awhile now. Sorry, but it’s difficult to describe.
Having health issues with my dog, the vet cant seem to find anything wrong. After reading all the issues with BB Turkey and Potato he has now had a lead test that will be back in a few days. Wow BB should be ashamed of themselves for selling a horrible product!! We have battled health issues for a few years now and finally realize it is food related. I found a site called http://www.cleanlabelproject.org it has tested certain dog food brands and you would be amazed at the results of heavy metals in certain foods! So very angry for what my poor dog has gone through and still going through. He has been really sick this past month having to visit the vet several times and staying there for fluids! Check out http://www.cleanlabelproject.org
I just started feeding my two miniature dachshunds Blue buffalo small breed dog food a couple of weeks ago. The smallest one who is only 8lbs. Developed diarrhea a couple of times and this morning she had it again. In addition, this morning she was trembling, didn’t want to eat and kept trying to climb into my lap. I have made a Vet appointment for her I will be returning the food to the store and telling them why
I will NEVER buy any of their products again!
Our cats have been getting sick more often than ever before on an only Blue Buffalo kibble diet. I’m switching brands. I knew something was wrong, now I know that it’s not just my cats and others are experiencing this. They’ve been eating Blue Buffalo for 5 years.
I have fed my dog Blue Buffalo/Wilderness for several years and he recently died from Lymphoma cancer. It was a big shock. What should I do???
I would love to be able to help fight to get them to stop letting Blue Buffalo continue to sell there products as well my two babies have been very sick as well and my 14 year old has just developed another tumor that I have to have checked by an oncologist next week. This is his second one in less than 4 years. The first required open heart surgery. After the surgery he stayed sick with pneumonia for almost two years and lost a lot of weight. My other one was having a seizure maybe 2-3 times a year then all of a sudden he started having them weekly then it amounted to having 5-6 a week and has been on seizure medication ever since, which is not cheap. They both are more lethargic than they used to be and one throws up yellow junk a lot and the other one its which foamy stuff. I have stopped the food and starting them on something else today and hoping things are going to get better, they have too!! Please get in touch with me to let me know what all I need to do to move forward if I can. I want to fight this, it’s got to STOP!!!!
I have posted the following on Consumer Affairs website. “I have fed my 2 pugs Blue Buffalo Basics Limited Ingredient Grain-Free Formula Turkey and Potato Recipe Adult dog food for the last 6 years. I changed all of their treats to Blue Buffalo. I started feeding them this because of allergies. The research that I conducted stated that it was a holistic dog food and all natural, best dog food and it was made in the United States. In November 2017, my 9 year old, female pug became ill, not eating, diarrhea, vomiting, lethargic. I took her to the vet and he said maybe she just got into something and put her on an antibiotic and steroids. She improved but I noticed once in a while she seemed to be regressing but then she would rally. On January 28, 2018, I again noticed that she seemed to not want to eat and started with vomiting and diarrhea again. I watched her a couple of days to see if she cleared. On February 1, 2018, I took her to the vet and he said a second illness in less than 2 1/2 months we needed to do blood work. Her liver enzymes came back very elevated. Once again, she was put on antibiotics and steroids plus Denamarin for her liver. She seemed to rally but on the following Monday, February 5, 2018, she had rapid, labored breathing and was shivering. I took her back to the vet, she was running a fever. She recieved two antibiotic injections, switched one of the previous antibiotics and was given more steroids to take every other day. She rallied for one day (Tuesday), then her breathing became even more labored on Wednesday (February 7th). My vet was not open on the 7th but I called first thing on February 8th. He had me come in for more lab work and an xray. Her liver enzymes were even more elevated and he sent us on to a university veterinary center. When I arrived at the U of M veterinary center on Friday, February 9th 30 minutes early for my appointment, they took one look at my dog and immediately took her back to their emergency area. She had an ultrasound which showed that her liver was enlarged, her gallbladder was leaking, and she had fluid in her abdomen. When her labwork came back she was severely anemic and she had very little clotting factor left. All of her labs were off of the charts. There was no hope. She spent her last couple of hours in an oxygen chamber looking at me with hopeful eyes while I waited for my family to come to the vet center because she could not breath outside of it. 2 and a half weeks after I had to put my baby girl to sleep I came across an article stating that Blue Buffalo Dog food had lead in it and the particular formula I was feeding had 840 ppb of lead and listed the exact symptoms that my dog suffered. I immediately quit feeding my other pug the Blue Buffalo food and returned any other Blue Buffalo products that I had purchased. I believe the reason my other pug has not shown the effects of this food is due to giving him cranberry daily for bladder stones and that has helped flush some of this from his system. I would never have given this food to my animals if I had known this. These companies do not care about our animals but only about the bottom line. Please if you are feeding your animal anything Blue Buffalo, Stop immediately.” I am so angry that they are continuing to do this to our pets. Please let me know what I need to do to become a part of this.
I’ve been feeding my pugs this same food and both of them have been not so great. One has elevated liver enzymes and has been going downhill. The other is refusing to eat. I threw away the last of this horrible food and am going to do the best I can to save my dogs. I am so upset about this whole ordeal. I thought I could trust Blue Buffalo as a brand, but now I know better. If a class action suit happens, I’d like to get in on it.
My sons dog has been fed Blue Buffalo since she was a puppy, she has had seizures for about 2 years now, and has to be on meds for the rest of her life. Thanks to dog food that is suppose o be the best out there.
Our Charlotte just passed away this week and I’m very worried it was the food. Charlotte was a puggle and she was 12 years old. She was healthy, had no previous issues. We usually fed her Iams dog food but we happened to be completely out of food and my husband was sick so I ran to the store and grabbed a 6lb bag of Blue Buffalo, small breed adult chicken and rice food for her (I couldn’t remember what we normally buy and I thought this brand looked good).
After 5 days of eating that food she had a seizure, vomited, loose stool, was lethargic, and unable to move her back legs. She tried to come back from it, but after 3 days seizures, no eating, very little drinking, increased heart rate and heavy breathing she couldn’t go anymore. The last two days she was at the vet and he was concerned it was a poisoning of some sort. We are sending her body to MSU toxicology to do a full exam and find out what exactly went wrong.
If it truly was that food, it will be devastating. This could have been prevented. It’s heartbreaking.
Amanda,
I am very sorry to hear about your dog. I would also be interested in her report. Here is link with more information: https://www.chagrinfallspetclinic.com/2018/03/12/pet-sick-blue-buffalo-pet-foods-report/
So sorry to hear about the loss of your pet. This sounds like our rottweiler who passed away about a month ago. the last bout of seizures started and they wouldn’t stop. Early that day before eating, she was jumping in and out of the car for her walk. She also had the heavy breathing and increased heart rate. I still have the food and wonder where I can go to get it tested.
Our border collie has been on the Blue Buffalo Freedom Grain Free Healthy Weight Chicken for about a year. She has recently started to lose her appetite and have some eye/vision issues. Will be taking her to the vet (again) for labs.
Our pup got gastroencolitis from Blue Buffalo Puppy Chicken and Rice. We had been using it just fine and then we got a 30lb bag that must have been contaminated. She got sick after two days on it and now that we switched her food she is fine. It’s ridiculous that Blue Buffalo is allowed to continue selling dangerous products. If I had known it was harmful I would never have bought it. Would love to be part of a class action suit to make sure other pups aren’t harmed.

I hope your pup made a full recovery.
My Rottie died of cancer. 1 1/2 years ago. We were mortified. We too feed her Blu buffalo for Four Years thinking it was great food! Now that I see these testimonies of other pet that have died, it breaks my heart thinking that I feed her food that consisted of poison.
If you are creating a new lawsuit. Please include me.

I am very sorry to hear about your dog.
I have fed my dogs (lab mixes) Blue Buffalo for 9 years now. Our 5 year old lab (who was on BB from day one) dropped one night having seizures and we lost him two days later. He went blind almost immediately after that first seizure and the next day we discovered he had a baseball sized tumor on his brain. He passed the next night in care of the neurologist from uncontrollable seizure. I really wonder if this is related. Blue Buffalo was the only thing he ate. And just tonight our 10 year old lab is starting to look weaker. Hoping it’s just old age….
How is this company still allowed to manufacturer their products, especially after the class action lawsuit in California and why are stores still shelving it. The guilt I feel for thinking I was feeding my wheaten a great product is devastating. Their product was purchased based on false and misleading claims. My boy has had many of the symptoms listed. He has been, and is currently, being treated because I kept going back to the same brand thinking it was a great product. Unknowingly, all this time, I have been poisoning him and this company is willfully doing it. While I cannot change the past, I would like nothing more than to see a change in the pet food industry. Profit and loss is what comes to mind. Their profits = our greatest loss. Shameful Blue Buffalo.
This is so upsetting. I have fed both of my dogs Blue Buffalo since they were puppies. My Siberian Husky was diagnosed with cancer in her throat that was inoperable in May of 2016 and I lost her March 10, 2017. She was only 10 years old. My other dog, a Sheltie, recently has been plagued with issues going to the bathroom, losing control of his bladder, coughing, and was diagnosed with cushings disease in Jan. 2018 – I’m not sure if its related to the lead contamination. He refuses to eat half the time now and has dropped at least 20 lbs since the summer. Even with medication, his symptoms have not improved much.
I was recommended to switch my dogs food to Blue Buffalo from my vet last year in an effort to drill down possible food allergies. She passed away 6 short months later. She became ill out of nowhere… 2 days leading up to her death she stopped eating and drinking water, a small amount of stomach bile that turned into exsisive vomiting and blood. I rushed her to the emergency vet where they thought to have gained control of the issue until she started vomiting again and uncontrollable diarrhea (with blood) then she collapsed and her body finally gave up. I am still lost and very confused as to how and why this happened. My vet was unable to tell me why or what caused this. She was only 3 years old and this was the most horrible experience I have ever gone thru. Not knowing how to take care of your babies in a situation like this is horrible enough then to think it could have been caused by the food that you provided (recommend by your vet) is something that will always loom over my head. I will always regret that decision.
Not sure if this is where the collection of names for a class action lawsuit is supposed to be, but count me in. Blue Buffalo claimed my cats illness and hefty vet bills had nothing to do with their food. I completely disagree.
Blue Buffalo seems to give all pet owners the same answer and they have gotten away with that for the last 9 years!
For some reason pet owners continue to buy their food regardless of how many dogs and cats have suffered as a result
Our beloved Bella has been diagnosed with kidney disease. She is only 5 yrs old and has been eating the Blue Buffalo small breed dog food all her life. She has lost a lot of weight and won’t eat. We are giving her a liquid supplement to help her to stay alive. I want to join the class action suit so all companies know that if they do wrong then they must be held accountable.
My dog has been eating blue buffalo dog food for 7 years since we adopted him. I feed him wilderness senior and a little bit of canned also various blue buffalo flavors. I recently went to have his teeth cleaned and the vet did blood work which showed he had liver disease so thought it best not to put him under for his teeth cleaning. Since that time November 2017 we tried denamarin (liver support) and a medicine called ursidiol. He began vomiting and having mild seizures which have since escalated. When he vomits I feed him chicken, rice, sweet potato etc and then ease him back on to the wilderness. I’m so upset to hear of this development. I never heard of the first class action suit. To think I’m the one who has been poisoning him with this dog food just kills me. Not to mention the cost of blood work, cost of the food etc. What a slap on the face. Please keep me updated with this. Needless to say no more blue buffalo for Bailey!
Our Dachshund just pasted away about a month ago and Blue Buffalo is what he ate. That’s all he ate, we thought it was the best food he could have. I just got another order from Chewy.com because I forgot to cancel it. I still have a bag and I would love to give it to the right person so it could be tested. If anyone knows someone with the lawsuit going on please email me.
Last month we had to put our best friend down. He stopped eating for a couple days and when we took him in the vet took X-rays. His liver was 4 times the normal size and his kidneys were failing him. I switched their food to blue wilderness adult chicken 10 months. Our other dog has her annual appointment this week and we are going to have them check for lead levels. I am very interested in learning more about this law suit and if Blue Buffalo was the cause of my dogs death.
Fed my GSD blue buffalo chicken and rice all of his adult life he had terrible fever weight loss at 7 years old then he died at 10 years old spleen tumor!?! Any others lose their dog like this?
Lost my Malti Poo because of this poison. He suffered terribly with seizures. He ended up dying in my arms. Heartbroken and angry about this. He never ate anything but Blue Buffalo for small breeds.
I just recently heard about this issue with Blue Buffalo which I have fed my Pits for years. Last year on March 8th I had to put my main man RJ down due to an aggressive cancerous bone tumor on his skull. It has devastated me as he was my first Pibble and was like my son (I do not have any children because I am a sworn bachelor). I have two others that I have rescued in the past year that have been eating the limited ingredient Turkey & Potato as well as the Chicken and Brown Rice. Needless to say that is changing immediately.
I have all of RJ’s medical records as well as pictures of his skull tumor from the specialist. I want blood! How do I get to Blue Buffalo? I can bury them!
So sorry to hear about your dog here is a link with more information: https://www.chagrinfallspetclinic.com/2018/03/12/pet-sick-blue-buffalo-pet-foods-report/
We have been feeding our pups Blue Buffalo for a while now and just within this last year one of our pups has a severely inflamed and super hard salivary gland. He’s in pain all the time. We have done antibiotics and now moving onto a steroid. Blood work said that it isn’t cancer. His neck is huge right now and moving his head around is hard. It’s so sad.
Our 2.5 year old passed away on March 11th. She was the light of our lives. She was dianosed with Chylothorax and her heart and lungs were being crushed by fluid. We could not do anything to save her. We spent thousands on Vet bills and no explination on how our pup got so sick. We had been feeding her Blue Buffalo since the day we got her. When I read about the Lead amount and the first class action, yesterday, my heart dropped into my stomach. I feel sick about this and due to this, could be why I had to say goodbye to my best friend.
How can I get in on this lawsuit???!!!
My cat has also started getting gastrointestinal problems in the last 5 months. I took him to the vet twice and everything was negative. I started giving him probiotics thinking that could help but hearing this makes everything click. What’s the next step here??
My 8 year old dog got sick after only 2 bowls. He vomited everything he ate, wouldn’t eat for several days, and when I went to the vet, he had elivated liver readings in his blood work. This appears to be the same issue from the previous lawsuit. Has has recovered but it took at least two weeks for his liver levels to return to normal, I am currently still giving him medication including a liver support and an antibiotic. He still can only eat soft canned food and throws up any dry food we try to give him. Needless to say- I’m going back to science diet…
How would you get information to either tell your story or get in on the law suit?
My frenchton was on the blue buffalo basic turkey and potato brand and when he was just 1 he started having seizures. They thought some sort of poisoning but couldn’t find out why. He kept having the, and they diagnosed it as epilepsy… he was on multiple medications, had many over night stays in emerge and we tried everything to get him healthy. We eventually had to put him down when he was only 2. We had no idea how or why this happened…we were told there was no family history with seizures. And now…I fear it was the food he was on all his life.
My other dog who is now 6 has been on the food since a puppy and will be taken off immediately (slowly obviously), but his symptoms have mostly been allergy related.
Anyways, would like information to share and add my story if I can…so no one else has to go through what we did.
Does this ALERT on the Blue Buffalo Dog food include the GRAIN FREE(BLUE FREEDOM)??
Our 11 year old Bichon-Shi-tzu cross has been eating Blue Buffalo chicken dinner for about 8 months and suddenly has massively elevated white blood cell counts, indicative of blood cancer. We are certain it is the result of the toxic heavy metals present in Blue Buffalo food. We are in Canada – how can we join your action?
Steen,
I am very sorry to hear about your dog. There is a link on the website on how to report food if you believe it is bad: https://www.chagrinfallspetclinic.com/2018/03/12/pet-sick-blue-buffalo-pet-foods-report/
I took my dog in for dental work and they ran the pre-op blood work that showed liver disease (liver value norm is 10-105; my dog’s value was 555. He was put on liver disease meds and massive doses of antibiotics with no better results. I have fed him Blue Buffalo Freedom chicken for small breed for the past 8 years (he is 11). I am convinced his dog food is the main cause. I wish I had heard about previous lawsuits against Blue Buffalo so I could have changed his diet before it became so disastrous. I now cook a homemade liver disease diet and his is doing better already, after only a few weeks; and he loves the food. I filter his water and only give him natural, non=commercially prepared treats and homemade treats. It is a shame that big companies care so little for the health of the animals they serve.
My dog, a 6 year old lab/Australian Shepard mix, has been eating Blue Buffalo Chicken and Brown Rice for about a year now. Before this we had him on a Costco brand, due to lower cost, the reason I switched was because I believed my dog needed to be on a “healthier, more natural” food which is why I thought Blue Buffalo was the right brand for him. He was sick on and off for a few weeks with something showing up in his lower intestines. The vet believed in was gastroenteritis. While he got better for a few days once we went back on the Blue Buffalo food he vomited today showing signs of blood. He has been tested again and we are back on prescription diet and the waiting game again. I had no idea until today how terrible of a product Blue Buffalo is. I refuse to support this company. From the information I gathered Blue Buffalo seems to be a very unethical company and that truly disappoints me. Really hoping things start to look up for my dog and that this food has not caused lead poisoning in him.
My Maltese is about to turn 10. She has eaten BB chick for small breed her whole life. When she was 6, she woke up one morning in stage 4 kidney failure and wouldnt move. Completely opposite of her normal yappy jumping licking self. We rushed her to an ER vet bc it was over the weekend. They stabalized her and had no idea what was wrong. Once we transferred her to our Vet, let did a test or Addisons Disease. It came back positive. I have read the most recent lawsuit that was dismissed and that man dog specifically had kidney issues like mine and many others. My baby has to take a steroid pill every night and a horomone injection every 25 days, at the Vet bc i cant do it myself, so its quite expensive. The last 4 years and the rest of her life that if the treatment. I cant help but assume this food, the lead, the company is responsible for all of these illnesses and if we can all get together again to fight we should. The emotional and financial wounds this has caused will never be mended, but holding this company responsible will help. I am beyond furious. Im about to call one of our TOP attorneys in the state of FL. He fights FOR THE PEOPLE (AND THEIR DOGS) its in his slogan. Watch out.
I am very sorry to hear about your dog. Please keep us posted about her health.
I noticed the new bag of Blue Buffalo “Healthy Living” chicken & brown rice formula that we have been feeding our (7, now 6) cats for years had changed, in a bad way. The cats did not want to eat it and were getting sick when they did.
I just purchased another bag yesterday that happened to be an older bag by a month. It looked very noticeably different and the cats were gobbling it up. I didn’t know about the buy-out by General Mills until this morning while trying to research it online. It looks like we’ll be making their food from now on.
In case anyone else is feeding it to their cats and want the info on the change, here are the lot numbers of the old (good) and new (bad) formula. These are the 15 lb bags, but I imagine all sizes changed around the same time. The old formula is: best by 2019 Jun 27 Lot:20190627 AH2 B 2144. The new bad formula is: best by 2019 Jul 27 lot: 20190727 AH2 C 1637.
I hope that people will stop buying this toxic pet food and that General Mills loses money over bad practices!
I switched my very healthy happy 3.5 year old pit/lab mix (Collisto) over to blue buffalo about 2 months ago because she had dry skin and allergys. The dry skin cleared up but within a couple of weeks i noticed that she started “slowing” down, i attributed it to her just getting older and not having that puppy energy anymore. A month later she started getting lethargic and had what appeared to be a cold (sneezing and constant mucus in her nose) I took her to the vet they gave her antibiotics and the “cold” cleared up, but still lethargic. Two weeks later she started throwing up mucus and had loose stool with mucus in it. I immediately took her to the vet that day, they said she was dehydrated and had a bounding heart rate, so they gave her anti nausea meds put her on fluids for a few hours and told me to bring her back the next morning for more fluids. That night i noticed her heart was beating extremely fast and she was breathing heavy but she was still functioning. I took her back to the vet around 9 the next morning and she collapsed when we got to the counter, the vet came out and instructed me to take her to the emergency vet immediately due to her heart rate and body temp (94 degrees). I got her to the Emergency vet within 10 minutes and she was literally a heartbeat away from cardiac arrest. It took nearly 6 hours for them to stabilize her with 3 different types of heart medicines. They ran blood tests, EKG’s, did xrays, and an ultrasound. The only thing they could tell me was that she had fluid in her abdomen, an enlarged heart and lethal arythmia, her blood work was abnormal but nothing indicating why she almost went into cardiac arrest, she was literally a mystery. They kept her that Saturday and Sunday and got her to eat prescription diet food and drink water. i picked her up Monday and she looked and acted like the dog i knew 3 months prior to this, but she still had inexplicable arythmia so they suggested i take her to a different emergency vet to see a cardiologist. He ran another EKG (still had a touch of arythmia but her heart beat was back to normal. He then performed an echogram, still the only thing they could tell me was that she had arythmia and an enlarged heart. The cardiologist gave me an antibiotic (just in case she had an infection) and sotalol and mexiletine for her heart and scheduled an appointment in two weeks for a check up. The first week i had her home i was still feeding her the prescription science diet food and she was doing amazing. the next week i started mixing the blue buffalo in with the prescription food to ween her back on to it. That week, she started getting lethargic and her heart beat/rate was increasing every night after i fed her. When i took her for her follow up with the cardiologist two days ago she was close to critical condition again. At that point i had already spent over $7,000 between the vet, the emergency vet stay, and the two cardio appts. and was financially tapped out and could not afford anymore expensive tests. So he upped her dosage of meds and sent her home. I was honestly preparing for the worst case scenario, i didn’t think she was going to make it through the night, but she pulled through and seemed a little better with the higher dosage of mexiletine and sotalol. When i fed her that night (Tuesday) she only ate a little bit, but almost immediately her heart rate was up and she was breathing heavy and barely moving. So last night when i put her food (blue buffalo) out she sniffed it, stared at me then walked over and laid on the couch. This is when the lightbulb FINALLY came on, i could tell she was hungry and wanted to eat, just not that food. So i dumped the blue buffalo back in the bag and gave her some Purina One, which she immediately inhaled. I gave her the meds and we went to bed, i have been keeping a constant eye and hand on her side so i can see and feel how her heart is beating, it was a little irregular but a normal pace…. I woke up this morning and again, she was like a new dog acting like a puppy again… The only thing i can conclude is that the Blue Buffalo did this to her. She will likely be on heart medication the rest of her life now and will always be at risk for sudden death due to the damage this has done to her heart. I am going to contact the cardiologist in the morning and let him know that her ups and downs have coincided with the food she has been eating. I pray for everyone out there with a similar story, this is truly frightening!
The same exact scenario happened to my dog of 7 years. Lethargic, constant sneezing with mucus, throwing up and loose stool with mucus, extremely dehydrated. I took her to the emergency vet, they did the same test, blood work included; everything came back fine. The vet gave her some anti-nausea medicine, fluids, and some antibiotics and sent us on our way. Later that night around 2 a.m. my dog started having a seizure (no history of seizures either) and I rushed her back to the ER Vet. Sadly the nearest one was 25 minutes away (I got there in 14 ) she was taking her “last breaths” when we arrived. They were able to stabilize her and she went into a coma. She stayed there for two days until I decided to end her pain. She was blind from the seizure and they could not keep her blood sugar at a normal level, it kept dropping lower and lower. The vet said her illness was due to sudden liver failure, and I believe blue buffalo to be the cause.
Hello Dr. Carol Osborne, thanks for useful article
I have a sudden sick feeling in the pit of my stomach reading these post!!! I had never heard that the Blue pet food had been recalled before reading this post or I would have switched YEARS ago!! My cat just passed away this past Thursday (April 12, 2018) of cancer. We are devastated! She had been find with only a few problems (Slight heart murmur and the start of slight renal disease) at her last vet visit (December 6, 2016). She has been on the veterinarian approved “Blue” diet for at LEAST 10+ years. March 15, 2018 she didn’t come out to socialize much which was very unusual so I scheduled a vet appointment for the next possible date, March 20, 2018. She had loss a great bit of muscle mass and refused to eat. By Easter Sunday, she could hardly walk. Her bloodwork came back showing elevated calcium in her blood in which my vet recommended the her to go directly to the ER Vet nearby. Upon the examination at the ER, they discovered a plural effusion (fluid around the lung) and mass in the cranial mediastinum which was likely due to LYMPHOMA (cancer) with concern that it was spreading to the brain causing intracranial problems. I immediately started her on steroids, appetite enhancer. I rushed to buy hundreds of dollars worth of holistic immune support, cancer support, lung support, homeopathic support. I gave her around the clock love and care. Sadly my girl passed away in my arms April 12, 2018 at 16 years old. I just don’t understand how a perfectly healthy cat got SO sick and passed within such short time. Just the week before, she was chasing lasers and feathers, jumping around, climbing stairs multiple times per day. I’m so sad and now after reading these post….sickened!! I still have her dry and wet food ….. I wonder if it can be tested?!?
We had our dogs on Blue Buffalo. One of our dogs had 2 stomach surgeries (eating grass and carpet that got lodged in her intestines) and she later died as she stopped eating all together. One ended up with a wired growth that had to be removed, and our third dog just looked unhealthy. We used Blue Buffalo as we thought it was a superior product…..boy, were we wrong. We no longer use Blue Buffalo and our 2 remaining dogs are doing so much better.
Note: the email I use on a regular basis is not recognized as a valid email.
My puppy who is 6 months old has eaten Blue since we got him. The vet had me switch to the large breed puppy food since he was growing so fast. After the first bag, he started having diarrhea, vomiting, was very lethargic, had no appetite, he started jaw chomping, and was very dehydrated. We took him to the vet, all blood work and X-rays were normal (we thought he might have eaten a toy), and they gave him some meds and IV fluids. We had him on a bland diet for a week and then resumed his Blue and within 48 hours the vomiting, diarrhea, jaw chomping and lethargy was back. We stopped Blue and switched and he’s been as happy as could be since. Is there another class action in the works?
My Shiba is now 7 years old. I’ve fed her Blue Buffalo all her life (appropriately for her age of course). I’ve trusted this brand until now. Spent a LOT of money on their products as we all have. But this angers me.
My dog has always been fine eating BB but within the last 6-8 months, I’ve noticed her eating more grass. She vomits it up but I thought this was normal on occasion. Suddenly she begins having problems with her bowels and although no diarrhea, she has had troubles going and is now irregular. She followed me everywhere staying inches away from me as though something was wrong. She then started heavy panting shortly after eating and is extremely restless.
2 months ago I stayed up with her until 4:30am until she could calm down. Thought the problem was her age so I recently reduced the kibble and bought the Blue Buffalo tub soft foods to mix in. Last night again she was panting heavily about 1-2 hours after eating and was again so very restless. She’d lay down for a moment then get right up again pacing the house. This continued for hours until I got her to lay beside me as I rubbed her tummy for hours until she calmed down. That’s the last straw! I took the beef kibble back to try chicken thinking it was an allergy when I learned our once trusted brand was sold months ago. I know the formula has changed as she never had these issues before. It all made sense now. I put back the blue products and am trying something new and have some pumpkin to help ease her tummy.
I am SO mad as I KNOW the food was the issue! What the hel* are they doing to our loved pets?! Let alone to our emotions.
If there is another Class Action lawsuit I want in!
We have been feeding our dog and cat Blue Buffalo Wilderness since we adopted them three years ago. All of a sudden, neither of them will eat their food willingly anymore, and our cat has been vomiting for the past couple days. I finally decided to check if they have changed their food in any way and saw this post. I wish I had more details on if and how the food has changed.
My cat has been eating Blue indoor chicken and fish canned and Dry food for about 4 years. She has thrown up undigested Dry food quite a few times over the years, I didn’t realize just how uncommon this was until recently. I have spent almost $1,000.00 at the vet getting her off the Blue, having tests done, getting her on a prescription diet to help her gain weight back, vitamin B injections, antibiotics and recovering from Giardia parasite. She is doing much better now off of the food. No throwing up in the past couple of weeks finally and she’s starting to gain a little weight. I wish i would of realized that the Blue pet food was hurting my kitty. She is over 12 years old now, so this has been quite a scare to me and my family. It upsets me that Blue has made her sick and vomit over the years. I wish i would have realized this much sooner. I can’t even imagine just how much I’ve spent in contribution to the billions for this company that sickens innocent family pets. If there is any information on joining in on the class action lawsuit/s I am definitely interested. I’ve had to pay my current vet bills with a credit card, because i can’t afford this. Im also inbetween jobs at the moment, so the timing financially is horrible, but I’ve been able to look after her and nurse her back to health.
We switched our dogs to Blue Buffalo and within a week they had bloody diarrhea so bad it leaked as they walked. They both had to be hospitalized and placed on special digestive food. This is the worst food for dogs and should be removed from the market.
My dog has been in Blue fir years and fir the last few months I noticed him hurting and hiding and stretching his stomach after he ate the food. I just thought I was giving him a little too many pellets but today it got really bad in small portions, so now I know fir sure it’s the food. He’s miserable. He’s almost out of it. Like in a daze when just before he was happy and waking around. I’m not giving him this food ever again.
Is this still pending? I have concerns that Blue Buffalo might have caused my cat’s cancer. Please let me know what is happening with this case. Thank you.
Our beloved 16 month old yellow lab puppy Tank has fallen very ill. We didn’t know what the problem was prior to him going to the ICU for 2 days. Tank had horrible diarrhea (with blood in his stool) for 3 Days and the vet put him on antibiotics. I switched Tank over to the rice & cottage cheese bland diet until he was able to have regular stools again. Like a dummy I went back to Blue Buffalo and Tank continued to have challenges. Finally Tank was so ill he could not walk. He was in ICU for 2 days and again put him back on a bland diet.
Now I finally figured out that there’s a problem with the food. I’ve already switch Tank over but now I have thousands of dollars in vet bills.
What is most deplorable is that blue buffalo is showing up in every Safeway in our area touting that it’s a premium brand and we were unsure if we were going to lose our beloved Tank.
After reading very little I have found that these folks have behaved very egregiously and should pay for the suffering and pain that both our beloved pets and owners have gone through.
My little Jack Russell died today. He was in acute kidney failure after becoming lethargic and I rushed him to the vet. He fought hard for a week but couldn’t make it. They asked about toxins. There were none. I switched them to Blue Buffalo the week before he got sick. My lab after my Jack Russell went in the vet started throwing up and getting lethargic. I pulled the food and she is ok after two days. I still have the food but don’t know where to get it tested. My little dog was only 3.
My cats were eating Blue Buffalo dry food. I lost one of my two cats, Kahuna, at the end of August 2018. He vomited every day and had extremely loose stool. I took him to the vet many times and spent thousands to help him. A cause was never determined. I did switch both cats to Hill’s i/d, both dry and canned, and probiotics. All my efforts to nurse Kahuna were in vain. I couldn’t save him, I was devastated, and his brother Toby was also. They were from the same litter, and had always been together, never apart.
I changed Toby’s diet back to BB (not aware of any food connection). Now Toby seems to be heading down the same road. I just can’t do this again. I have Toby back on i/d canned, but there is not much improvement and I can only pray he will not succumb to the same fate. The only sign of illness he is showing is the loose stool (possibly vomiting, but I can’t be sure of a pattern), which has been going on long enough to have him lose some weight. I cannot lose him too.
I recently had to put down my protector. My beautiful German Shepherd was on large breed brand for only a few months. She suddenly became extremely lathargic was throwing up and unable to walk. She had blood in her urine and in her stools. Just her sad eyes was pall that was moving. We tried to save her but it happened so fast. I would strongly advice doing your homework before you feed your pets this food.
I fEEL tERRIBLE mY sTUDIO hAS bEEN oN bLUE BUFFALO FOR PAST 8 YEARS tHEN LIKE LAST YEAR SHE JUST GOT ALL DIFFERENT …HAIR LOSS CANCER IN STOMACH LIKE SHE WENT FROM A SHOW DOG TO THE WORSE IVE EVER SEEN OR COULD IMAGINE , WE SWITCHED HER FOOD A YR AGO BUT SHES NOT THE SAME , SHAME ON BLUE FOR NOT TELLING ALL THEIR CONSUMERS THE TRUTH AND FOR HIDING THE FACTS SHAME …
I would love to join a class action law suit. Please let me know if possible. I just lost my 4 year old pit bull to liver failure. Tool him to the vet…did everything we could but he passed away. I fed my dogs two bags of the salmon grain free kibbles. All three dogs got sick. I feel so bad for feeding them such a horrible product. This company should be ashamed for all the sick pets.
II have 6 cats and bought a case of blue wet cat food And one of them has developed severe diarrhea I cannot believe that there’s a food out there that cost so much money and yet we are still letting it sit ourselves like this I thought I had remembered certain about it whenever my husband just called me to say he was sick but how can you remember everything and where the odds that your cat’s gonna get sick. The reason I’m even commenting is because of all the people I see on here with animals with cancer I also have a ship Soo who’s 10 and he developed lymphoma cancer he had about a golf ball size on his neck and when I went in my bet ham me a piece paper and said it was very controversial but worth looking into about a medicine Called fenbendazol (panacur c is what We purchase) And anyway my dog has been cured of it for almost a year and a 1/2 now and I also took it at the same time because they were wanting to remove my thyroid and so far I have had awesome results with my thyroid so I suggest anybody please look Up this medicine because they have known about it for over 30 years that it cures cancer and they just won’t tell you about it thank you.
Two days after Christmas we all were out running errands and we came home to 4 large piles of vomit. We determined it was Lucy. our 10yo lab, who wasn’t feeling well. Normally she has a stomach of steel so this was very unusual for her. In addition, she was drooling a lot and shedding a lot more than usual. We figured she ate something in the yard and we would keep an eye on her. I made a vet appointment for her the next day since this was so odd.. She was low key the rest of the day. The next morning, before her breakfast, she vomited again. She didn’t want to eat her breakfast.
I took her to our regular vet, said she was on the second bag of Blue Lamb Life Protection. We switched from a grain free (different brand) because of all of the concerns with grain free. They did an xray and didn’t see anything. They ended up giving her an anti nausea shot and wanted us to feed her a bland diet for a few days and see how she does. That afternoon she ate about 7 pieces of boiled chicken and was refusing cookies. If you know Lucy, you know she doesn’t pass up food or cookies.
Sunday morning she was still refusing food and drooling even more and shaking so we took her to the ER vet. At the vet she was stressing and had an elevated heart rate. They took her back, did another xray and ran bloodwork. Fortunately everything came back normal but they had no idea what was wrong. We decided we would start with some pain medicine and fluids, which made her so much more comfortable, and we would watch her closely. I made her a bland diet of chicken and rice and added in a tiny bit of can food (not Blue) to add a little flavor so she would eat. She began to improve over the next few days so we added back in a little bit of the Blue kibbles. Guess what? She vomited that within 30 minutes. That definitely led us to believe something in that food was not good for her. We continued back on the bland diet and bought a new brand of kibble. This one is agreeing with her and she has bounced back to her old self. She runs to us when we say cookie again.
It’s unacceptable that so many people are losing their pets or having steep vet bills due to the food.
I have 2 dogs that both have developed reanal failure at the same time. They have both been eating the same Blue Buffalo Adult Lamb dry dog food for years. This past October 2019 our Calamity Jane, American Eskimo mix had to be rushed to a Veterinary Hospital and stayed there for 9 days to try to save her life. Turns out Jane is at stage 4 kidney disease and thank God she’s still with us but is and has been going through a very hard time of it. I can’t go anywhere or even leave the room without her getting upset. She’s not been able to eat very much in the past 3 days. We have to take her to the Vet every other day for SQ Fluids treatments. I’m tired and sad not because I have to do all this to try to keep her alive but its hell for her too. There is also 7+ medications I have to try to get her everyday. I know she is not going to be with us much longer but I love her so much. Our other dog Elvis is a yorkie and he’s in stage one reanal failure and hes on a special diet from the veterinarian and a pill I need to get in him twice a day. The vet bills have made us poor very poor now. So much so that I can’t find the money to have the yorkie rechecked as to how the new diet & meds are working for him. I scared and crying even now. I still have the empty dog food bag of the blue buffalo and as yet I have not called the 800 number on the bag. I thought what are they going to say but lie and offer me coupons like that’s going to change the fact that their dog food is killing both my kids/ dogs. Please if a lawsuit against blue buffalo will even make them take their poisonous products off the market then I’m in too.
My two cats are getting sick from Blue Buffalo’s Grain Free Chicken Treats. About fours weeks ago they started throwing up regularly after I had opened up a new container of these treats. I couldn’t figure out why they were getting sick so often, and had a hunch that maybe the treats were strangely the cause. I stopped feeding them the treats and they stopped vomiting. Thinking that it may have been a coincidence, I reintroduced the treats today (about a week and a half after I had initially stopped), and one of my cat started to vomit about two hours later. After researching further online I feel so fortunate that I giving my cats Blue Buffalo for their regular cat food. I fed my dog Blue Buffalo all her life and she was lucky to live to 17, so I thought for sure this was a good brand of food. I had fed my cats these treats previously without any issues, but I am certain there is something wrong with this batch that I opened last month. It is completely negligent and unacceptable that Blue Buffalo is not committed to safety and quality control with their products. Tonight I’ve seen so many complaints online from people attributing the death or severe illnesses of their pets to this food. They should not be able to continue doing business. Is there an economic way of testing treats for toxins? I wish I knew how to pursue this further.
Seeing this is an older post BUT replying anyway because I want to warn other pet parents everywhere, I can. Have 2 kitties. Being ignorant, I fed them Blue Buffalo. My 12 y/o cat started vomiting foam and stopped eating completely. Her vet discovered a couple inches of her intestines were diseased-completely black. He removed the diseased tissue(which took every cent of my savings)but I was just relieved that she’d be with us as we thought she was dying. I then learned how bad Carrageenan is for health particularly gut, colon(CANCER), intestinal health. Began buying Nulo. Both kitties stopped vomiting almost completely. Need to order the Nulo as it’s not sold in stores here. Last week, ran out and bought 4 cans of Blue Buffalo salmon catfood from Tractor Supply, to hold us over for 2 days until Nulo arrived by Fedex. BOTH cats became VERY SICK after just 2 cans of the blue buffalo. Both vomiting, lethargic, one stumbling.. BOTH refused to eat. One cat refused to eat for 2 days, the other for 3 1/2. I thought one might die. Had to seek advice from a family friend who’s a (human)physician. I’m so thankful, the really ill kitty began to eat/drink again today. Now really nervous to give them ANY prepared petfood. Bought an organic chicken to make them bone broth and searching for cat food recipes & will use all organic, real ingredients but perhaps buy a top brand of Taurine to add. Will be mindful of necessary nutrients. I can’t trust food manufacturers anymore. While I cannot prove that Blue Buffalo sickened & injured both kitties & almost killed the one with diseased intestines, I know, it’s true. I’m ashamed that I doubted myself & bought those few cans recently. I thought a few cans wouldn’t hurt. I was so wrong. I do have them empty cans but all Blue Buffalo catfood contains Carageenan and that’s the biggest problem. If you’re reading this PLEASE research Carageenan and AVOID it in human/pet foods. I love animals and good people and want to save them the pain, suffering, heartache(and money). Purina and other cheapo brands may contain roadkill & race horses but at least it doesn’t contain Carageenan and cause slow poisoning at a high price.
