Careful observation of a cat’s head can give a good general indication of overall health status and temperament. Take a few minutes each day; look, listen and feel your cat starting with his or her head. First of all, cat’s eyes should be clear, bright and free of tears and the nostrils should be clean. Runny eyes, a nasal discharge and sneezing, for example, may indicate a respiratory problem. Ears should smell and look clean. They should not be itchy, filled with debris, or scarred. Pearly white teeth with pink gums and a fresh breath indicate dental health. The lip margins are normally smooth and free of lesions and ulcers. Healthy fur should shine. It should not be matted or soiled, and there should not be areas that are void of hair or show signs of dandruff or skin parasites like fleas.
The kitten should act friendly, enjoy being with people, respond to you and be eager to be play. Be leary of cats that hide or sleep excessively. Most cats are ready to be adopted once they are weaned, ideally between 8 and 12 weeks of age. Ask the owner about vaccines, food preferences, worming and grooming.
