Flea / Tick Treatments. Hi Everyone: I am passing this on to be on the safe side: This is a new product designed to be a more effective product than other flea / tick treatments that was just released this year. It is available thru a vet and not currently on-line. I got ProMeris this week for my 7 dogs (6 Huskies & 1 Golden-Airedale), and the results were debilitating for nearly all of them-including me. Since my incident this week, my vet has pulled it from distribution and alerted the manufacturer, Fort Dodge.
Here are my results: Within less than 2 hours after applying, 4 of my dogs had vomited from 2-4 times, 3 were disoriented and stumbling, 1was dragging his back leg, 1 was salivating. I had very similar symptoms like an allergic reaction-my lips were swollen, eyes very red, mucous membranes such as eyes, nose, and mouth were stinging. I was very disoriented – dizzy equilibrium and not able to drive. To make this a short story-all 7 of my dogs were admitted to the hospital for veterinarian care, and 3 of them remained for care, IV fluids and observation for 24 hours. I was in the emergency room. I’m home now and so are the dogs. We’re all feeling much better. Vet bills were over $2,500 and Fort Dodge is paying for these. Not only can the product cause this reaction, it has a highly noxious odor that permeated the house and is just starting to dissipate after 3 days.
Your dogs/cats might not have the same reaction, but given my experience-I wanted to help you all become well-educated about the product.

Very interesting story. My husband and I just got 2 puppies and the vet gave us Promeris in their puppy kits. I applied it to them and it was horrific! They were lethargic the whole day and the odor was so incredibly strong, I couldn’t be near them. Now one of our puppies is experiencing hair loss over his entire body. I am very upset about this flea treatment and can assure you, we won’t use it again. We are washing him in Dawn to strip away the oils and hopefully he will start regrowing his hair. Thank you for your story! Deanna Orrill, Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Hi Deanna,
I appreciate your feedback and with puppies it is always important to be very careful using toxic flea products. You might consider a good vitamin supplement for your puppies like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com, which will boost their internal immunity, promote hair regrowth and help with overall health and wellness. I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you

Hi Dr. Carol–
I applied ProMeris to my 9 month old border collie and feel so guilty and badly that I didn’t thoroughly research this awful product first. Since we are in an area with a high level of Lyme Disease, I wanted to trust my vet when he gave me this new product. He said he wasn’t recommending Frontline any more and ProMeris was “much better”.
Within a short time, my pup turned from a bundle of exuberance into a lethargic dog. The smell was alarming and I didn’t feel too well, either. I called my vet and he suggested bathing the dog, saying he had a client complain of a similar reaction last week.
I am heartsick about my casual decision to apply this new product since I’ve been hyper vigilant about everything else. He eats either human grade all-natural kibble with raw food (the BARF diet) and I am very careful not to let him eat any wheat or corn. Will my puppy return to normal? Is there any chance of liver or neurological damage? So far, his only symptoms are lethargy and I immediately bathed him to get rid of the oily product and the sickening smell.
Hi Pam,
According to reports on Promeris, at this point the dogs have returned to normal with no long lasting adverse side effects to my knowledge.
I would continue your great diet and consider a supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com to boost internal immunity and promote a quick recovery and overall wellness.
I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

My family adopted a Mastiff in May from a humane society. The poor guy was abandoned in his yard for weeks. He was nuetered 3 days before the adoption. He had kennel cough, torn dew claw, and a large abscess on his flank as well. After mending his wounds and finishing the antibiotic series, I applied Promeris as directed by my vet. My vet warned me of side effects such as lethargy and strong odor. I administered the product between the shoulder blades underneath the hair. Within the first hour I noticed lethargy. He did not lick himself to ingest the product to cause this side effect, for I was vigilant to him. Within 3 hours I noticed slight swelling on the face. His breathing was normal, gums were pink and continued to watch him. The lethargy lasted about 24 hrs. The swelling lasted about 32 hrs. I already decided at that point to use the rest of the package (2 months left) then return to frontline. That was until day 5 exposed a side effect that had me livid! The area were product was applied had been scratched raw. The severity of the problem was not discovered until seen by the vet and a $103 bill later. He had a blister like rash that required oral antibiotics and steriods as well as daily scrubs and antibiotic ointment. The blistering rash was larger than the scratched up area. I did contact Fort Dodge for compensation. They made arrangements for me to return the product at my vet clinic. I am currently a case and will submit all vet bills after my 150 pound puppy is %100 healed. I will never use Promeris again. Yes, the odor was strong, but that alone would not have given me a negative review on the product.

After applying this to my 9 year-old border collie mix, her heart rate slowed to an alarming rate and she experienced many of the symptoms listed in your other e-mails. She required a “drug reversal” injection and medicated bath. My vet has also quit selling the product. However, if you go on the product’s website, they are claiming that blogs like this one are based on one incident and are reflecting inflated results. My vet alone said he has seen 5+ cases. I am infuriated at the manufacturer’s misrepresentation of the facts.
Hi VaLissa
I understand exactly what you are saying and appreciate you sharing this with us. Unfortunately manufacturers are only required to state adverse reactions when a certain percent of pets react badly to a product and better regulations are definately needed because of incidents like this and many more. Certainly making this public via the web etc, will help others to aviod similar problems. You might consider contacting the manufacturer and ask for financial compensation for your dog. If I can help I am glad to and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you

I have also has a terrible experience with Promeris. I have a golden retriever and a great pyrenees and with in hours after applying they were extremely lethargic, depressed, and did not move the entire day. Not only did that happen but my entire house smells so badly of Promeris that I can feel it tingling in my own skin even though my husband was the one to apply it. I am very angry at my veterinarian for switching me to this product especially as I am 8 months pregnant. I don’t think it can possibly be safe to be pregnant and feel tingling on my skin from my dogs tick treatment. I plan on returning the rest to my vet and going back to Advantix which I have never had a problem with. If anyone is considering trying this product I would say absolutely do not unless you want to see your dog in an extremely sad state.
Hi Jessica
I agree with your decision and appreciate you sharing this with us. I hope your dogs are feeling better and wish you the best with your pregnancy. I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765

It is so sad to read all of the comments about Promeris. It took us three months to pinpoint the cause of our dog’s symptoms which included uncontrollable urine leakage, depression for days, loss of leg control, and staggering. It scares me to think of the long term effects of this drug for pets and humans…yikes!
Hi Dee,
I agree that Promeris has caused problems for many dogs and am glad your dog is feeling better. I appreciate you sharing this with us and if I can offer any help I am glad to talk to you. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

We used Promeris a month ago with no problems. We retreated our dogs, three are service dogs, this month and within 24 hours two of our four Golden Retrievers were lethargic, vomiting, and breathing quite shallowly. One of was also started having tremors and, when not lethargic, seemed quite agitated. The two less significantly affected were lethargic, but otherwise acted ok. Our vet was on vacation so I called the vet covering for him. He suggested we immediately bath all of the dogs, offer fluids for hydration, monitor them closely and bring them in if any signs/symptoms worsen. Fortunately all seem to be back to their normal, well, and happy selves this morning. I intend to contact the manufacturer this morning. A search on line indicates that this may not have been an isolated event.
Dear Joanne,
I am glad your dogs are feeling better. Yours is not an isolated event! There have been several reports of adverse reactions to Promeris. Contacting the manufacturer is a good idea as well as spreading the word as you are online. If I can help in any way I am glad to help. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
