Dogs and cats being fed various brands of Purina Pet foods are suffering with gastro-intestinal disorders. Clinical signs range from vomiting and diarrhea to lethargy, depression, dehydration, and death.
Currently, there have been numerous reports of dogs and cats being sickened; some have also died, and the link is ingestion of Purina Dog and Cat foods. Yesterday, January 4, 2024, the FDA sent Purina a letter formally addressing these concerns; however no response has been received yet from Purina.
To quote, “Consumer reports are indicating there is some issue with some of your foods. We encourage Purina to be fully transparent with any FDA investigation and not repeat the lack of transparency issues of the past.”
Unfortunately, Purina’s history of cooperating with FDA investigations has been poor at best, so it is likely that no immediate answers will be revealed. Should you have a dog and/or cat not feeling well and/or to whom you are feeding Purina, you may want to re-think your choices. This veterinarian just went through an episode with a Labrador-eating Purina One who suffered from vomiting and diarrhea for weeks.
Thankfully, the pup is much better now, and his diet has been changed.
Since this knowledge is not officially available on the web, concerned pet owners should check a Facebook Group called “Saving One Pet @ A Time.” The group documents all complaints received, and although it is a “members only” group, any pet owner can join and read the reports that they have posted.

My 2 yr old lab spent last Saturday at our vet urgent care; vet said was most likely linked to her food – Purina One Plus – and strongly encouraged me to report to FDA, which I did. Upon changing her food, all of her sickness issues are resolved.
