Do you know if the cat food is safe? I just bought a bag today.
We always tell our clients to steer clear of pet food companies that have any history of recalls. You can always check this on the FDA website.
https://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/SafetyHealth/RecallsWithdrawals/default.htm
We pay a fortune for this dog food that states it contains only natural ingredients, totally unacceptable, why does it contain this other rubbish????
Do you know for sure that this is true?
all of the things listed ARE NATURAL arsenic lead cadmium all heavy metals are natural that is why you have to actually use critical thinking. All chicken for the last 40 years were fed pellets of arsenic to keep chickens well and we ate it. Stay informed and learn that natural does not mean non toxic. Things like uranium are natural get it
My don’t g has been on this food for 3 years I’m so angry. Having just read this. Do you know what the symptoms are.
Hi,
I’ve been told by a holistic pet nutritionist that the heavy metals are due to the fish. They felt that the food was safe. Anecdotal, but still worth looking into further.
My dog was on these brands for years and she died from cancer, she was 9 yrs old.
Anything with fish has heavy medals in it. It’s a natural contaminant caused by human destruction of the ocean and rivers. If you eat fish or any kind of sea food you too have it.
Natural is a marketing buzz word. Means nothing
Orijin and Acana aren’t even listed on the fda link you’ve attached. Has there been any notification about their cat foods?
Not sure about the cat foods. Our previous cat was very picky when it came to food, so we fed him mostly with Acana and Orijen. He died in pain at the age of 3. Autopsy shown that he’s liver and pancreas were completely destroyed and each of those orgarns was doubled size-wise.
That’s horrible! I’m so sorry to hear that about your fur baby! I was thinking of Acana for my cats, but I will far away 🙁
But Acana and Orjien have no history of recalls? It’s one of the top-rated dog foods because of this. Have you done any research on this?
Look at the lawsuit for yourself! Several states have joined in! I’m furious! I’ve been feeding my dog’s Orijen for YEARS! My Cooper has had it since I adopted him in 2012! Now I am VERY worried about what it has done to him! Premium dog food. Premium price. And HIDING the contamination! I just got a refund for the bag I ordered two days ago. All pet stores should pull this from their shelves immediately! All owners should throw out what they have!
Well this was the last company that didn’t have a recall, and they still don’t really have a recall, since the levels are WAY below anything scientifically proven to have any effect so who do you reccomend?
We are just providing people with information, yes this is NOT A RECALL. Fromm 4 Star, Sojos, and Stella and Chewys
If you are providing people with information then you need to provide all information such as what are the acceptable levels of mercury in fish, etc. Giving numbers doesn’t tell people anything.
There are no acceptable levels of mercury in products sold for ingestion especially when they are
marketed as premium “healthy” products!
Does this affect these brands in Canada or just the USA?
Does this effect Canada also?
What dog food brand would you recommend for a 11 year old, with a sensitive system?
Cathy,
I try to avoid using food companies that have a history of recalls. I would suggest you using a food that your comfortable with, and agrees with your dog.
What dog foods do you recommend?
Fromm 4 Star, Stella and Chewys, Sojos
Hi, Does this include Canada??
Hey doctor! if you are going to post something like this have facts! We want to know is this in Canada as well. You should be more informed that this instead of getting us concerned!!!
Sarah,
We are not saying there is a recall or claiming it is bad food. We are just posting that there is in fact a lawsuit. We are not involved, or have any more information. Just sharing the current events with pet owners.
Hi All. This was the response I received from the law office handling the class action..
Thank you very much for contacting Lockridge Grindal Nauen P.L.L.P. regarding your pet questions and concerns. We are experiencing an extremely high volume of calls and e-mails about our suit against Champion PetFoods and their Acana and Orijen brands of dog food. This summary should answer most of your questions.
A class action lawsuit against Champion Pet Foods was filed in Federal Court in California on March 1, 2018 on behalf of Jennifer Reitman (a California resident), Jennifer Song (a Minnesota resident) and Richard Clapp (a Florida resident).
The Complaint was amended on April 19, 2018 to include Rachel Colangelo (a resident of New York), Zachary Chernik (a resident of Illinois), Samantha Jerding (a resident of Colorado), Scott Weaver (a resident of Wisconsin), Ramy Shaker (a resident of Michigan), Emma Berry (a resident of Massachusetts), Kristen Pederson (a resident of Alaska), and Holly Rydman (a resident of Washington).
This case is about mislabeling and misrepresentation. We allege that Champion did not disclose the presence of heavy metals, toxins or BPA in the dog food so that consumers could make an informed choice. Plaintiffs seek both injunctive and monetary relief on behalf of the proposed Classes (CA, MN, FL residents), including requiring full disclosure of all such substances in its marketing, advertising, and labeling.
If you are a resident of California, Minnesota, Florida, New York, Illinois, Colorado, Wisconsin, Michigan, Massachusetts, Alaska or Washington and purchased the Contaminated Dog Food (listed in our complaint) from July 1, 2013 to the present, you are already included in the proposed class. If you were not a resident of the states listed above when you purchased Acana or Orijen dog food, you are not currently a member of the proposed class. However, should we file a complaint that covers additional states, we will post it to the website.
Based on Champion PetFoods public statements, all food sold in the US is manufactured at the Kentucky plant since 2016. It is our understanding that US residents cannot purchase any food made in Canada so our suit does not include any food manufactured in Canada by Champion PetFoods. At this point, this class action does not cover Canadian consumers or anyone outside the United States.
We cannot give you advice as to what to feed your pets or what course of action you should take regarding your pet’s health. You should contact your veterinarian for these questions.
Our suit does not currently cover cat food purchased in the United States. However, should we file a complaint regarding cat food, we will post it to the website.
These actions do not progress very quickly. If you are interested in following the suit, we will be sending periodic updates (every 3-6 months). If you do not wish to receive any additional updates, please reply back with UNSUBSCRIBE and we will remove you from the list. You may also continue to check our website for any updates. https://www.locklaw.com.

Hi there. I am just looking at this now and live in Canada. My dog has been on the Acana. Did anyone ever find out what this is all about and does it include Canada?
This company has never had any recalls. So what are you referring to?
its not a recall, its a class action law suit
Champion had a recall in Australia
Look it up
http://truthaboutpetfood.com/comment-from-pet-owner-in-australia-regarding-orijen-pet-food-irradiation-issue/
Fromm recalled a selection of their food in 2016, but you recommend them?
Fromm was only recalled for some of their canned products for putting too many vitamins in a few batches, it was nothing bad like lead or poison that could cause deaths. None of their kibble or treats were affected. Fromm is a small, family owned business that puts a lot of love & care into their products. I’ve had my dogs on Fromm for ten years with no problems & trust the company completely.
Does the Orijen puppy food also apply to this ?
I’ve been feeding my siberian husky this food for about a year and my black lab my lab seems to be okay with it but my husky has digestive problems right after eating his food I had no idea it was the brand of food I just thought it was the breed of dog because I had another husky that had digestive issues I stop feeding my dogs last night and they digestive issues seem to go away I am just sick knowing I fed this poison to my dog’s thinking it was one of the best foods that is so costly
Did you ever maybe think your dog has digestive issues because he might be dealing with allergies to something in the food?
That fact that one dog is ok and the other not so much should point you in the direction to try a different food rather than to keep feeding “poison”…….
The only thing I would feed this to is my worst enimy! My dog started getting bald spots and losing his hair, he was bald all around his bum area and looked like a baboon, his coat got frizzy and coarse and I was finding his hair all around the house. Its been almost a month since he’s been off of this food and I started making his own dog food out of raw ingredients , his hair is now growing back and starting to look shiny again. You pay a fortune for this food and you think your getting the best for your dog, this food should not be on the market!
No the cat food causes crystals in the cats urinary tract. We have had to treat two cats for this serious life threatening condition.
My cat got a bad urinary tract problem TWO DAYS after I started feeding him Acana food. It got better with medicine, then got worse again when he went back to Acana food. I took it back to the store.
This is heartbreaking to hear someone else had the same problem! My kitty was in such discomfort! For a WEEK. Poor little thing.
This is their first recall since the last time I checked. They have a fantastic record with the exception of this lawsuit…
.. I should add…. if you didn’t buy from anyone that has ever had a recall… the # of places to buy animal food would be almost 0. Most have had recalls and some have had numerous.
This isn’t a recall, it is just a frivolous lawsuit.
This guy gets it

What recall? This is a class action suit. And the company that did the testing on this food also gave Fromm bad marks. However, Purina and Alpo (terrible food) got high marks.
It’s not a recall. It’s a lawsuit that Champion claims is without merit and plans to fight vigorously. Read their response here: https://m.facebook.com/ChampionPetfoods/photos/a.359821227429557.81320.206779879400360/1591577597587241/?type=3&theater
Does this include Canada
I have 1st hand knowledge that Blue Buffalo products are not what they advertize…return the food and find a better brand.
Lisa
We have founds that to be true!
We have had 2 cats with urinary tract crystals that were soley on Orijens. My vet has confirmed it was a direct result of their Orijens cat food. I would be very careful with their food.
As far as cats getting urinary crystals,Any dry food will cause that in male cats if they are fed only dry food.My niece lost one of her cats last week because of that and although he had trouble with it a year ago the vet never told her.She knows now of course. As a cat owner for over fifty years I have never had that problem because they were fed wet as well as dry food all their lives and lived between 18 and 25 years.
Wrong!
Dry food in general causes this. I strongly believe the dry food section should not even exist for cats. It is there for owner convenience and the pet food industry’s profits. I had a cat who suffered constantly from cystitis ( crystals) and when I switched her to ( balanced) raw she never had an issue ever again! It’s mostly about getting enough water. Cats have a low thirst drive as they are designed to get their water from their food. Raw is mostly water.
Cats have to DRINK! If you cats got crystals while feeding Orijen, it is because they were not drinking enough water. NOT because of the food they were eating, not directly. I agree with the person above raw is best, but even adding canned food into your cats rotation of food can help stop the formation of crystals! Adding a water fountain or just letting a faucet drip can also do the trick!
I lost a cat due to urinary blockage, and I was feeding him Orijen cat and kitten and also Wellness canned cat food every day. I am not going to feed Orijen or Acana again to my precious cats, I just don’t trust their food anymore.
Does this suit and recall include Orijen Senior?
My poodle has been eating this food and has recently become very ill.
Suzanne Laplante
Thank goodness i saw this, my irish setter is 11 weeks my son picked a bag from petco. They said the puppies love it. I feed him one time a hand full notice a bloted belly. Didnt feel right, stopped.
Never believe those kinds of rumors without scientific evidence, just wanted people to feed croppy foods!
I’m from Canada, my husky will be 3 in November he has been eating acana dogwood since birth. I am in shock I hope my dog will be OK, as Canadians will be be able to join the lawsuit? Also now what should I be feeding my dog, it seems like everything is contaminated
I’m wondering the same!
I recently had to put my 8.5 year down because she had a large hepatocellular carcinoma regrow on her liver… makes me wonder.
Is your dog healthy? You shouldn’t change just because you read one thing on the web. Who is the person who said this? What is their education level? Have they done studies on this, or did they just have one sick pet?
hopign to find out if this is in canada my dog has become VERY VERY sick
Start cooking for your furbaby…I have been feeding human food to my girl for her 14 yrs and she is in very good health…. if you need any examples of making a healthy dinner for your dog…. look up Dr Judy Morgan… she has a live feed on Facebook every morning and talks about current issues..recalls and she is a big advocate for home cooked or raw food for your pets…. please look her up..you won’t be sorry.
Check out Ripley’s Ranch Turkey and Sweet Potato. Totally Grain free and no added fillers, colours or “unknow”. Made in BC and available in Western Canada and Ontario. We have a Great Dane and a Dane X Mastiff/ Kuvasz on it and they are thriving.
read up on detoxifying your dog from heavy metals, you can use bentonite clay or charcoal just be sure to research the doses
I would not be getting hysterical yet. I have fed Champion foods for years. Lived in the area where it was formulated and have had discussions with the man who formulated Acana right from the start. Never had a problem and never met anyone that had a problem. Another post made mention that the food she claims was terrible was produced in Kentucky so the question arises if it is a facility problem. Given the propensity for the civil courts of the US to be filled with frivolous suits perhaps a wait and see attitude might be the wisest stance.
Seems to be from a woo science source called Clean Label Project which thinks Pedigree, etc is great. Don’t trust their word.
Does this food recall include The made in Canada ?
Beginning in early 2016, Acana dog food split into two product lines. One group of recipes is produced for USA and the other for Canadians. Do you know if these ingredient issues impact Canadian products as well?
I used Acana limited duck and pear, and Acana regionals (red meat) and ALL of my dogs began having serious skin issues, UTI’s and loose stools with mucous. Urinating a lot, and consuming TONS of water! I looked online for any information for any possible relation to these health problems in association with pets eating these particular brands of Acana and I found several posts about the same issues with other people and their dogs, who were eating the SAME foods!! My dogs have never had these issues before. Their ages range from 13 to 7, but during that time I had younger dogs, including a puppy who was ultimately RUINED from the horrible health issues from these foods..I did not want to believe that what I had thought to be a good line of quality foods for my dogs was actually the culprit of ALL of their suffering….When I did finally try switching them from these foods to another dog food, ALL of my dogs (10 of them) began to improve!
Curious, what did you switch to?
What food did you switch to?
Your dogs health issues describe my dogs – after being on Acana just fine within the last several months have been progressively getting worse
What did you switch too
Hi my golden used to be on Merrick but they changed their formula so I decided to try Orjen senior. Shortly after, he developed a massive hot spot on his face. A month later, 2nd bag, scaly scabby eczema on his tail and part of his rear. Now I noticed it’s all over the rear third of his body. A month ago, The vet thought it might be flea allergy but at 12 years of age, he has never had reactions of this caliber to flea bites. My dog has been on nexguard for the fleas btw. So I’m going back to Merrick limited ingredient asap. We shall see if this clears up.
OMG I have the same problem with my German Sheppard.Shes 10 and she never had any problems with ear infections, skin nothing until I started her on ACANA about 3 years ago ;/ reading all of these people with similar issues is really making my final decision to go human grade that much easier. thank you all for sharing your dog health issues
Is this only in the states??
My 4lb chihuahua has been on “acana pacifica ” for long time… no health issues.
I thought this was an Alberta (Canada) made product…. how can the issue only be in the states & not Canada?? Is it made in other plants? Besides the onenin Alberta??
why would you think that the ingredients would be any safer because you are in Canada if they are producing foods full of heavy metals then there is no reason you should think it is safe there
There is made in Canada, and then made in USA as well. Im assuming there is the original plant in Alberta and one somewhere in the states as it is a Canadian brand. USA has different laws regarding ingredients which is why were all wondering if it’s both us and Canadian or just the us made acana/origin
Both of our dogs (15 yr Maltese/shihtzu Cross, and 2 year old rescue Australian Shepherd/??? Cross, ) are and have been eating Acana Small Breed Senior, and Acana Large Breed Adult respectively. They are both in good health. Our dog food is sourced in Canada.
Such a shame we are paying top dollars to feed our dogs healthy foods but then to find out we are poisoning them that upsets me how can this be happening what about the food we are eating ??
“…..toxins in their pet food sold throughout the United States.”
My question is, does this effect the same brands mentioned above in Canadian pet stores? Or are Canadian consumers of these products safe?
I am in Canada and believe that there is a different manufacturer under the same brand name here. Do you know if there have been similar results in the Canadian markets?
And is this the kibble/dog food? Have there been tests on the treats – i.e. freeze-dried products?
I appreciate you sharing the information!
we don’t know about Canada
try calling the law firm
As far as I can read the USA recipes are totally different so I wouldn’t think it affects the canadian dog food
This Orijen is all I fed my dogs and cats for three years. Should I be getting them tested for mercury, lead and arsenic?
They have been eating royal canin for most of the past few months and seem ok even though I did buy Orijen when I couldn’t get to the vet to buy RC, but now I am worried.
What should I be looking for in my dogs and cats?
Is this in canada as well?
we don’t know
there has been no recalls, i cant find any evidence of anything on the fda site.
its a class action law suit not a recall
we buy the dog food in Canada is it the same manufacturer??
yes
Same company, different manufacturing plants…
Is this also in Canada? I have fed our dog Orijen large breed and now adult , since he was 6 weeks old he turned 3 of the 22 of this month.
Does this include Acana cat food ?
we don’t know
Hello I am a Canadian who has had 3 dogs eating Prefer as well Scans my concern is my first Chihuahua passed away and had difficulty with his heart would this food have done the damage??? He was only 13 and this breed of dog is known for its longevity.
Terry Clarke

Is this only in the USA or Canadian varieties of Acana and Orijin?
Hi I’ve been feeding my dog with Acana dog food for 10 years well what should I do
perhaps stop feeding that and try a new brand or a home made diet
Just straight telling someone to change their food with no information other than this frivolous lawsuit is ridiculous! Maybe you shouldn’t be in practice! You should ask what this customer is feeding, and if they has experienced any problems! If their pup is not having issues while feeding this food, then there is not reason that they should “perhaps stop feeding and try a new brand or a home made diet” !!!
Is this information accurate for Canadian made Orijen products as well? And if so would that be a separate class action suit?
I have been feeding Orijen to my rottie for over a year, puppy the adult (original) this dies bother me a lot. What do you recommend for a large bread active Rottweiler?
Can we see the analysis wich determinate that toxicity level? I mean…full analysis, with laboratory stamp, date, etc. Is very important news that, so is beter to have the full informations.
I would call the law firm for that
I would be very interested to know if It is only the American produced Acana that has tested for the toxins. Do you know if their Canadian counterpart has had the same issues? My dog was diagnosed with Pancreatitis and only ever ate Acana until my sister tried another brand and he became deathly ill?
I asked our trainer/breeder who is obsessive about animal nutrition. The company (Clean Label Project) doing the test rates Purina a 5 star food for its lack of metals(however a 1star in nutrition because its lack of real meats). The amounts found were also ~10% the safe amount for rodents not dogs. Also neither Acana nor Orijen have been recalled for this.
I have started making my only dogs food at home. I lost two 17 yr old healthy dogs within a month of each other and I am certain this tainted dog food is to blame. If i had proof, I would be suing them. I have one dog left and will never feed her commercial pet food again.
Where is a good place to get a book for making own dog food. I want to do this for our 2 year old esky. What is name of book
Is the food acana sells in europe the same toxicity?
I buy acana pet food in Spain.
They send it to France.
No problem on my flat coats so far.they have acana large breed grain free.
My son’ s fox has acana poultry . He has skin problems and a long lasting “hot spot”
Is it the same manufacturing in Canada?
We have given this food to our 8 year old mini schnauzer since we got her! She recently developed a growth on her chest that vet is watching since biopsy did not show malignancy.
Why is this not on the FDAs Recall &Withdralls list for 2018??
its a class action law suit not a recall
Does this include Canada
What brands would you consider safe?
Stella and Chewys, Sojos, and Fromm 4 Star
What symptoms should we be looking for?
I know this says in the United States my question is for a tg8s apply to Canada as well as I feed my Chorkie the duck and pear Acana and have for 6 yrs
The site truthaboutpetfood.com is very helpful.
Go to their Facebook page and you will see this is bogus information about champion pet foods. Here is also a link to their info sheet
http://www.championpetfoods.com/wp-content/themes/champion-petfoods/res/research/Champion-Petfoods-White-Paper-Heavy-Metals.pdf
Thank you for that link. It puts everything into perspective. My previous dog died of cancer and her brother died of Cushings, and neither ate Acana. You can’t blame every disease on the dog’s food. Bad quality dog food is the culprit. If you feed your dog a grain-free food, preferably organic, with no genetically modified ingredients and without a ton of hard-to-spell and understand additives, you’re doing the best you can for your pet. It’s my understanding that Canadian Acana food is sourced in Western Canada and processed into kibble in Alberta.
Feeding a biological appropriate RAW diet is the best you can do for your dog or cat. Grain-free food has more carbs in it than grain based kibble, so it’s not the answer either. Dogs and cats are not designed to eat carbs… feeding the overly processed nasties in a bag to your dog or cat will never be beneficial or healthy or “the best” you can do for your pet. Mass marketing has convinced so many that a dog or cat’s food should come out of a bag. It’s a multi billion dollar business because of so many people buying into their claims. It’s caused so much illness and even death. Cancer is prevalent now whereas it was rarely heard of. Kibble equals convenience. It’s all garbage whether it’s Pedigree, Orijen, FROMM etc. It’s all cooked and dry. Both dogs and cats need a diet of RAW meat, organs, and meaty bones rotated throughout the week. And if you think you can trust your vet to support a RAW meaty diet…. most won’t. They get a lot of money from Hills/ Science Diet for selling it in their practice. They also fund their nutrition course they get in vet school. Did you know the first kibble was invented by a sales man?
My dogs were on Acana for a while..can you mention some of the side effects that are happening as a result?… my cat is on it now :/
Why is there no recall on the Acana dog food
Oh my god, I fed both of these to my cat on a regular basis believing I was doing a good thing for my cat with organic food. This is seriously awful. My cat died in 2014 and there was literally no sign of anything wrong with him meaning he wasn’t hit by a car or not foaming at the mouth like he was poisoned. He was healthy and still only about 8 years old by then.
was this cat food as well?
I’m so sorry about the loss of your sweet kitty. I know how hard that is. I also experienced something like this recently with one of my cats. I found my little 2 year old suddenly dead one day. He was an indoor kitty, so not exposed to any possible dangers in the great outdoors. He showed no signs of struggle or pain….he was just lying there on my floor when I came home, after my being out for only a couple of hours. We have another kitty, 6 years old, and I worry constantly that he, too, will just suddenly drop dead. He gave us a huge scare a year ago with a pretty severe UTI blockage that nearly took his life. I have been feeding both of our boys Acana Prairie their whole lives, also believing that it was an extremely healthy food. I live in Alberta, Canada, and have always been told it is locally sourced and made. I am SHOCKED to hear that there have been so many health problems surfacing from feeding both dogs and cats this food. I will never know what took my kitty so suddenly that day. He was so young, and otherwise so incredibly healthy. It just makes no sense. I do not believe it was an obstruction of any kind because he showed no signs of choking or any other form of struggle.
What dog food brands would you recommend? I feel overwhelmed by the choices and all the recalls lately?
Fromm 4 Star, Stella and Chewys, Sojos
CANADA OR NOT?
We thought the Canadian brands were ok but were just advised about an issue with Acana in Australia so we cant be 100% sure.
Thank you for doing an article on this, I frequently bought this brand for my cats. Is this only for dog food, and not the cat food as well? Or is the dry cat food just as harmful as the dog food when it comes down to the toxicity?
right now the dog food tested positive for lead, we do not know about the cat food
Can you reccomend a brand of dry cat food (only for in between meals) that is also high protein and grain free one that doesnt contain lead?
There is a new pet food company for cats: Smalls Cat Food, it looks wonderful. https://www.smallsforsmalls.com/
Does this problem include their foods in Canada?
I have been using Orijen Six Fish for years. Can this problem with heavy metals cause heart problems ? I have 4 dogs and 2 have heart problems now. Tre vet thought the the one was strange because she just turned seven. She’s too young for this.
Yes Lead damages the entire body
What about Canada ? My dog came off this good last year when sudden medical issues started occurring !
Tbh, I’m shocked that there are dangerous ingredients in Orijen and Acana. I’m very concerned if the problems are solely with products from the Kentucky USA plant, or if the Canadian plant is involved also.
Any word on the Cat foods of Orijen and Acana?
we don’t know about the cat foods
Is this in Canada or only USA?
That’s what we use
http://globalpetsonjasperedmonton.com/dogs/
The link is the food we use
I am so upset I choose this brand of dog and cat food because it was claiming to be healthy and free of the bad stuff. All a long it’s just the very food that will do the most damage! Not to mention it out of control expensive! I’m so angry. I researched all the brands and was certain this was the very best. Boy I was wrong . This is wrong in so many way. I guess when they say the fresh caught fish and fresh eggs and meat they ment it. The ocean is terribly polluted and I never fed the fish line. But dam can their be one honest food company we who love our animals trust!???
This is in the U.S.. Is there an issue in Canada also? The plant is actually kine of local to us.
I live in B.C. , Canada and I’m wondering if I am still able to join the lawsuit. I have been unknowingly feeding Six Fish made by Orijen for quite some time and have proof and it is recorded by the pet food store. I am a cancer survivor and my dog played a huge part in keeping my spirits up and keeping me engaged. It makes me very sad and angry that thought she was getting a great dog food only to learn now ,how very wrong I have been. Please let me know if I am eligible to participate in this lawsuit, I owe it to my best buddy ‘ Karma’ to fight for what’s right for her and all dogs and owners.
yes just call the law firm posted
Is this in Canada also?
Until this announcement, we had not learned about the potential for detrimental levels of heavy metals and toxins. Can there be lingering effects which we should be aware of. What tests or treatments might be prudent and reasonable? I do believe my dog developed and retains a sensitive stomach, some excessive drooling and allergic symptoms as a result of Acana’s Kentucky produced dog foods.
My dog develop a cumulative intolerance for the new (Kentucky produced) Acana. Even with embellishments of meat and cheese, he eventually refused to eat it. We tried several different Acana varieties with mixed results. He had too frequent vomiting, developed an anal gland infection, itching and excessive drooling. We had been favorably impressed with Acana while it was from the Canadian plant. Last January, we accepted that Acana was the problem and found others with a similar experience at dogfoodadvisor.com . The fish varieties were the worst, even getting to the point of having a strong chemical smell. We discovered and embraced the idea of raw feeding, based upon analyzed recipes.
I had complained to Acana that I believed their new food was making him sick, and suggested the presence of toxins. I notified them that others had come to the same conclusion. I received a response 13 Feb 2017. The response did not admit there could be anything afoul with the food, nor did they offer to look into whether my complaint might have any merit.
I am glad they are being sued for this.
Omg…I fed my border collie six fish blend for a long time. And senior blend.
He recently passed away had kidney failure and a stroke of sorts.
Is this for Canada as Well?

I just opened a bag of acana senior with free run chicken wild flounder and Fraser valley greens… Is it contaminated? Thanks for the heads up
What would symptoms be of poisoning say from Arcana Wild?
This is a frivolous lawsuit and your post is fear mongering. This food is the best out there.
I absolutely agree. There are NO recalls on this manufacturers products in Canada.
Got an adopted dog back after being gone about 6 weeks. He was being fed Whole Earth grain free puppy food. He looked terrible; no muscle tone and weight loss. I am convinced had he not come back when he did, he would have died. Is this food any good, or is it lacking something??
Hello,
Our Red Setter was eating Orijen & Arcana dry foods some time ago. It was the Chicken or Fish Variety.
She now has problems with her Liver Enzymes, would this be the cause of or have contributed to this.
Thank you
Sharon Lister
it sure could be as Lead damages the entire body including the liver
Are these products made in the US plant or the Canadian one?
I have been feeding my standard poodle Acana since she was a puppy.. she is 3 years old now. I just seen this article about a class action suit against the company. I am sick over this. What should I do?
The best thing would be to have your vet do a metal toxicity test, I’m thinking of doing the same.
Is it the same for Canada I live n 100 Mile house I’ve feed Acana to my dog for 6 years
What are the symptoms of heavy metal toxicity?
Since feeding this I did have 2 dogs die, one was 9 one was almost 11. I really didn’t think anything about the food. I thought it was the best on the market. I will throw away what I have left and NEVER buy it again. This is insane. What is the company saying about this??
Is this for these brands in Canada also??
Would it be prudent to have bloodwork done to see if there are high levels of these toxins in my dog’s blood?
you certainly could do this
WOW, and we thought we were providing our pets with the highest standard of dog food. Poor Oliver, died of bone cancer 5.5 years ago.
As with all things, research is the best option. Keep in mind that this is not a government-mandated recall, which actually points to a problem with the food, but a lawsuit, which is very easy to initiate in the States. These lab values were presented by a group which has already proven itself to be unreliable and biased. While the finding of BPA in the dry kibble is truly worthy of interest, let’s not forget that it is impossible to avoid heavy metals in food, whether it is pet food or human food.
I can’t find a date for this heads-up. did you post it recently?
Yes March 1
My Acana says made in Canada. Question should we be concerned?
What brands are recommended?
We have had luck with Fromm 4 Star, Stella and Chewys, and Sojos
So does this include Acana in Canada? As this dog food is made Alberta, Canada but the law suite is in the US?
Does this pertain to the states only? I buy this for my dog in Canada, should I be concerned?
Has this been there first recall or have they had others? This is the first one I’ve heard from Acana after switching from blue buffalo trash.
The food is not recalled. The company that did this testing also gave Fromm bad marks….seems the better foods are being attacked while cheap filler foods are getting high marks from this company.
This is not a recall. This is a lawsuit brought against the company by three people who say the company is giving “false advertisement” to the public. Please read the information so you do not start a rumor that the products are under a recall. So far nothing has been found wrong with the food…every dog food contains these minerals…the only one that even caught my eye was the BPA because that’s usually just found in canned food.
For quite some time I wondered why my pups were not energetic and gaining weight and I often had to mask the Acana food with cheese. My Chi/Pom-mix Daisy was recently very ill with an enlarged spleen and high fever. After a few days she broke out into a rash with open sores over a good portion of her back by her tail. I’ve been feeding her Acana Heritage Chicken listed in the article sent out via FaceBook. I’m trying to determine if these symptoms could be related so that we can get her healthy again. This all started on Tuesday, March 20 with Vet visits on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We now have an appointment with an internal specialist on April 4. I usually only give her about a 1/3 cup a few times a week in combination with other foods but my father was in the hospital so my pups (Daisy & Peanut) ate more dog food than usual. Peanut acted strangely – going into his crate which he rarely does – but he didn’t have the same reaction as Daisy. I knew something was wrong and watched but he must have been strong enough to flush it through his system. The symptoms listed in the law suit are vague – does anyone know more specifically what the symptoms are and how harmful they are to our pups? Also, what can we do to detox them?
Cindy,
I am very sorry to hear about your dog, we do not know the specifics, but just sharing the current information. I would suggest talking to your vet, and reaching out to the law firm. All information is on the website. Thank you
I have fed my 2 Akitas Acana pretty much their entire lives. I’ve tried to be careful & use quality, grain-free foods. I also add fresh ingredients. Last October(2017) my female was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. She’s been having Grand mal seizures. Her neurologist suggested an MRI. Everything came back clear. I am thinking the toxins built up to an intolerable level causing her to seize. She turned 6 years old on 2/24/18 & up until October, she was perfectly healthy. This is just devastating to read.
Well steer clear, WAY around Science Diet cat foods. Vet prescribed Science diet k/d and our poor old cat nearly died of starvation continuously Barfing it up! Switched Old Cat to Ultra grain free Performatrin limited diet Fish and potato and cat has gained back weight and stopped puking the next day.
Science Diet foods are chicken foods corn, soy, wheat and egg and chicken meal based foods. Every allergen food is in these corn based formulas.
Clean Lable is not a is not a credible source. They did the same with baby food:
https://www.snopes.com/news/2017/10/26/baby-food-arsenic/
Our dog died from a mysterious disease at 7. He was fed with Orijen Regional Red for the last 4 years! Can it be related to the food? Can you tell us the symptoms that occurs?
What was the disease? Can you please be more specific or contact me privately zchernik@4gci.com
I just finish watching the documentary “Pet Fooled”… Eye opening and I am glad I did. Raw food only, but can we be sure of that as well?
Hi, i´m Chilean.
We give this food at our dog: Acana/ Fresh water fish formula. Number production batch “3006962-73392 / BB 06 jun 2019 21:23 LC”
How we are must could be safe for our dog?, wich date or production batch or is´t all production batch?
I’m shocked to read this!! A pet supply store sold me on Acana singles for my dog stating it was the best single source food & “Never had a recall” I’m sick to my stomach!! And their food isn’t cheap!
I just called Woofy’s in Courtenay, B.C. Canada and spoke to an employee who said that the factory in question is in Florida and that the Canadian products are not in question. She said that the parent company of Orijen and Acana is Champion Foods, who say that the allegations are false, that all of their ingredients are tested by two outside bodies/testing companies before they are used in the pet foods. She gave me the number for Champion and said that we are encouraged to call if we have any questions: 1-954-562-6019.
Sounds like everyone has the same concerns, but there doesn’t seem to be any answers yet. The question ….Is this issue only affecting the American based foods or is Canada involved as well. I haven’t fed my dogs any of the flavours of Orijen that are listed, I give mine Senior and sometimes the Fit and Healthy one when they are out of Senior. It is disturbing to know after researching this food 5 years ago, that I fed the puppy orijen to my new litters and the adult food to my adult dogs. I see it doesn’t include these particular flavours, and my dogs all appear healthy and don’t have any issues. It has become scary to not know what kind of food is safe to buy anymore. 🙁
Is the pet food orijen original sold in Europe The same toxicity?
I bought it in Spain and the y sens me in France after.
I’m very anxious after read your analysis. Can you helline me?
Is the pet food orijen original sold in Europe the same toxicity?
I bought it in Spain and they sent me it in France. The pet food made in Canada.
I’m very anxious after read your analysis.
Corinne,
That would be hard for us to know, I would use at your own discretion.
I’m not saying I’m not concerned, because of course I am. But I think it is worth noting that this lawsuit is based on lab testing from the Clean Label Project, who state that they are a not for profit organization and unbiased, but also ranks Purina as a 5 star food. I call BS. Also, the lawsuit is not citing any sick pets or toxicity, instead it is just stating that Champion Pet Foods packaging misrepresents the ingredients as the in-house testing shows lower levels of these heavy metals and no BPA. Finally, the lawsuit has started after Champion Pet Foods opened a second facility, this one in Kentucky, which does not supply the Canadian markets. Anyway, yes, I am concerned and will follow the story, but I’m not considering taking Chloe off Orijen….yet.
Clean Label Project: Lots of Unfulfilled Dog Food Review Promises
How legitimate is the Clean Label Project’s dry dog food label ratings? WDJ editor Nancy Kerns gives us her own Clean Label Project review concerning the company’s evaluation of dog food.

If you are a resident of California, Minnesota or Florida, and purchased the Contaminated Dog Food (listed in our complaint) from July 1, 2013 to the present, you are already included in the proposed class. If you were not a resident of California, Minnesota, or Florida when you purchased Acana or Origen dog food, you are not currently a member of the proposed class. However, should we file a complaint that covers additional states, we will post it to the website.
Based on Champion PetFoods public statements, all food sold in the US is manufactured at the Kentucky plant. It is our understanding that US residents cannot purchase any food made in Canada so our suit does not include any food manufactured in Canada by Champion PetFoods. At this point, this class action does not cover Canadian consumers or anyone outside the United States.
I have been feeding one of my dogs one of the foods listed in the lawsuit. I am so thankful you published this information because she has been having issues, over the last year off and on she has refused to eat in the morning. She would vomit a little but by dinner she seemed fine and would eat again. Earlier this month we took her into our vet because she wouldn’t eat at all and she was experiencing diarrhea and was vomiting blood.
The vet did x-rays and some lab work and everything there seemed normal so she said to give her a bland diet for a few days then resume normal diet. We did that and she seemed to be back to normal.
As of yesterday she has refused to eat the dog food. I would never have considered the food being an issue and possibly poisoning my dog!
What food is even safe anymore? I’m considering Farmina, it’s manufactured in Italy. Do you know anything about this food?
Hi Renee
We’ve had luck with Fromm’s Four Star and Stella & Chewy’s
We’re not familiar with Farmina
Hi there,
My dog has been eating this Acana Dog Food, salmon, chicken and beef since he’s been a puppy. He’s now 2 1/2 years old…About 6 months ago he started puking a little bit in the morning but not every time, sometimes if we didn’t let him out right away he would make a bit of a puke mess in his crate. I thought maybe it was a gas/acid problem, so I gave him a raw hide stick to help balance his stomach…he didn’t really want to chew on it. Now he hasn’t eaten for 3 days…has diarrhea…I’ve been noticing his poop looks dark brown like the color of Acana Dog Food but the one poop looked like mucus and a little blood…not lots of blood but a little. Today we bought Canin Dog Food from PetSmart because it’s a name brand our vet uses. It’s Easter Weekend and I know most Vets are on Vacation and our vets are on Vacation. I hope it’s not too late…just wondering if anyone else’s dogs is doing the same from this dog food. Please let me know!
raw hide stick is horrible, you should be more concern about giving that to your dog. Please do not feed your dog anymore rawhide, please look up how they make rawhide and all the chemicals used on it. Hope your dog is doing okay now.

Hi Margaret,
We find that if a dog or dogs are not doing well on a particular diet-especially when it’s sold as an expensive, premium dog food trying a different food makes good sense.
In general if a pet food is agreeing with your dog we look for a few basic markers: a normally formed stool, a minimal fecal volume [max 25%] relative to the amount of food you’re feeding, bright shiny skin & hair coats, and good energy levels.
In addition after reviewing this label there is a significant amount of “meal” which is of questionable nutritional value at best.
Any pet food or pet supplement that contains phosphorus is not advisable in our experience as it puts a real burden on the kidneys. Notice the label only states the minimum amount of phosphorus included, so how much phosphorus is actually in this food is not being disclosed! Another red flag. Modern research documents the fact that today we balance calcium with magnesium, NOT phosphorus.
In addition, Copper accelerates aging. Finally, many ingredients are prefixed by the word “fresh.” In in a pet food marketed as “premium” with a substantial price point, this is questionable; one would think “freshness” would be expected in all the ingredients?
I hope this information is somewhat helpful despite not addressing what Acana feels is “healthy” regarding the heavy metals and lead content of their pet food. Scientists have not found either to offer any health benefit to pets or people-in fact, quite the contrary!
Since 2 of my rescued dogs developed cancer, different breeds and ages eating the same food, expensive “good” food, i.e. Blue Buffalo lamb and rice or grain free chicken I have learned too much about dog food.
For a cost of $1.25 a lb ,an Instant Pot and a few hours of my time I now make all 8 of my dogs food.It is a healthy balance of animal protein, including organ meat and very low amount of healthy carbs like pumpkin and sweet potato, with raw spinach and I get homemade bone broth as a bonus. It is no more expensive than overpriced toxic waste like Blue Buffalo and the dogs love it.
I get asked if I worry about the dogs nutritional requirements. No,and I don’t worry about heavy metal toxicity, salmonella, Listeria or phenobarbitol either.

We have a beautiful black purebred German shepherd that is 6 yrs old.
We live in Morinville Alberta which has the Acana dog food plant right here in our tiwn.
We thought that giving our girl this food was the best.
Until now.
And recently… our German Shepard has been having intestenial problems.
Her bowel movements are not normal.
Runny
We give her pumpkin in her Acana food with no relief for her.
So sending this to you in hopes there is an answer.
I have given up with US produced pet food for my 13 indoors kitties. We now feed FARMINA dry food plus home-made human grade food with the addition of our own duck and chicken eggs. I give them 4Health Canned Grain Free Cat Food. The grain free CAT food is made from human grade ingredients in a human food manufacturing/canning facility in Thailand. It is illegal to use “meat and fish waste/byproducts” and “meals” (always rendered and includes 4-D animals) BTW, the 4Health dog food is Ainsworth.. so that is US produced from 4-D meat.
Farmina dog and cat food is made in Italy, where all GMOs are banned, including those used for animal feed. They use NO “MEALS”. You see, all meals are rendered products! They use NO Pea proteins.. lentils, garbanzos etc. NO grains. The first two ingredients are eg Fresh Wild Boar and Dehydrated Wild Boar, Fresh Lamb, and Dehydrated Lamb and 95% of protein comes from animal sources, and it don’t get much better than that! Their cat food is 44-46% Protein and just 15% Carbohydrates. The food also provides a wide range of “Nutriceuticals” to add powerful anti-oxidants, It is one of only a handful of foods that uses twin screw auger processing so heat is minimal and nutrient quality is preserved that is usually lost in single screw processing.
Please join my group at the link – we have been educating pet owners for 5 years on “bad” food and even how to feed a pet well on a tight budget. All are welcome!
My soft coated Wheaten Terrier will be 6 months old on 4/24/18. I bought a bag of Acana Lamb & Apple on Sunday. On Monday 4/16 I gave my puppy 1/4C Acana and 3/4C puppy food & Origen treats. (obviously cost is not the object.)We have had raging diarrhea since! We have been tested for worms, parasites, cocciddiae (?) giardia ALL NEGATIVE. we are giving lomotil, Apple sauce, Chinese sticky rice, boiled chicken and today we changed her food after my groomer/store owner told me about the lawsuits. I have a bag available for testing. We are now trying Canadian and Italian dog food. Really? We can’t make good, safe dog food in the U.S.? Shameful!!! Hopefully my little Wheatie will be OK after all!
I am just in shock. Took my 7 year old Blue Heeler in for breathing difficulties and lethargic behavior. Got sent to an emergency clinic. She has liver cancer which has spread to her lungs. I am so so so angry. I don’t know if this is related but I can’t imagine it has helped her health that I’ve been slowly poisoning her for her entire life. 💔
You pay a fortune for this food and you think your getting the best for your dog, this food should not be on the market!
i’ve been feeding my dog acana poison?!
good to know. great!
just went & bought “the honest kitchen” freeze dried food.
anybody with thoughts on that brand?
I feed Alana dog food in Alberta Canada –
was Any of Canadian food effected or was any United States produce food shipped to Canada for sale please ? Thank you
Thank you SO much for putting this info on your site. I’m SO happy I found it. I am spreading the word!
Ive been feeding Acana to 6 dogs for 5 yesrs now and after switching to Acana i had no more weight or skin issues as I did prior. They’ve been eating only Acana and now being seniors 7 to almost 11 yrs old are healthy, active dogs as seniors. I have small, med and large breed dogs.
I reside in Ontario, Canada. I have two 2 yr English Mastiff’s. I began introducing Single Lamb and Apple into their current kibble few weeks back. Ratio 10% first week, 20% 2nd week etc. I reached approx 30-40 % of Acana after several weeks. Almost immediately upon introducing this food began finding piles of undigested kibble vomit in yard. Thought it would pass, found total of 8 in yard yesterday. There has been 5-6 instances in house well. Last night female filled her belly and with in 3 minutes vomited and emptied her stomach. Did web search and found this site/info. Hour or so later washed and filled feed bowls with 100% of their original, no Acana kibble. Both dogs immediately came and emptied a bowl each and have not expelled any. The total amount of Acana these two dogs have consumed is 1 and 1/2 , 25 lb bags. They have both noticeably lost weight and coats have diminished in quality with in the short period. They both had an air of lack of wellness to their appearance last couple weeks, running nose, dull , stressed appearance. There does appear to be a correlation. While Acana’s website and packaging remains impressive and alluring, I will take the review as given by my pets. Going to pass on Acana moving forward. I am grateful to Chargrin Falls Pet Clinic for bringing this issue to light. Thank you.
I reside in England, UK. A few years ago I was trying out all different types of dog food to help my spaniel’s allergies and when I tried Arcana (can’t remember which one) she threw up the lot next morning undigested. However I am now thinking this might be linked to the quantity of legumes in the food given the recent FDA concern over legumes, potatoes in grain-free dog food and heart disease. My spaniel’s allergies are a lot better now after switching to a mix of Origen Six Fish (Canadian) and raw dog food companies in England. I have however started reintroducing dry food with grain (rice, oats) to dilute the legumes. I find it all so difficult to win at this game of trying to do the
