April 14, 2010 – A pet product used to relieve dog arthritis pain has been recalled by the FDA due to possible Salmonella bacterial contamination. The Cetyl M dog arthritis product is made by Response Products in Los Vegas, Nevada. The recall is for Cetyl M for Dogs, lot numbers 1210903 and 0128010. People handling CetylM are at risk of becoming infected with Salmonella, bacteria especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after touching this product.  Healthy people infected with Salmonella should be aware of potential signs, which can include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Should any of these signs exist, contact your physician.

Pets with Salmonella infections are often lethargic and may have diarrhea with or without blood, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and subsequently infect other pets and people. If your pet has consumed any of the recalled Cetyl M and/or has any of these signs, contact your vet. Cetyl M is used for for Dog Arthritis and was distributed nationally through pet retail stores, veterinarians and online pet retailers. The above-referenced lots of Cetyl M for Dogs were distributed in either a 120-count bottle (shipped between January 8, 2010 and April 2, 2010) or a 360-count bottle (shipped between February 11, 2010 and April 2, 2010).

Affected lot numbers of recalled Cetyl M are as follows: #1210903 and 0128010. The lot number can be found directly above the bar code on the label.  This product is in tablet-form, about the size of a dime and is a light brown color.
