Pet owners are looking high and low for reputable sources of pot for their pets. The internet is filled with marketing hype, claims and testimonials about the amazing effects of the “weed” with the ever-popular CBD Oil at the forefront.
What’s the latest legal news for veterinarians looking to prescribe legitimate pot, CBD Oil and other edibles for their patients?
Note that effective as of today, November 14, 2018, according to the Ohio Veterinary Medical Board,
“all marijuana products, including CBD [Cannabidiol] Oil, may only be dispensed in a licensed Medical Marijuana Control Program dispensary.”
The marijuana products must comply with the current rules and regulations stated in Ohio’s Marijuana program.
Regulations include knowledge in writing of the source of the weed and the exact amount of active ingredients contained in each product.
The Ohio Department of Agriculture oversees licensing laboratories in which testing of all pot products will be conducted. Testing will serve to validate exactly what as well as how much active ingredient is in each pet “pot” product.
56 medical marijuana dispensary licensees were awarded by The State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy in this past June 2018. Each license is provisional. The licensee has six months to document the fact that they are in complete compliance with all laws and regulations and that they meet all dispensary operational requirements. Once in compliance, they will be granted a certificate of operation.
As the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program becomes operational, the Veterinary Medical Board will continue to provide veterinarians with updates at https://www.medicalmarijuana.ohio.gov/
Note that until marijuana dispensaries become operational, no one, including veterinarians, can legally possess or sell CBD oil or any other marijuana-related products. Veterinarians in violation of this rule may be faced with criminal prosecution including loss of their license to practice, monetary fines and potentially jail time.
