Salmonella bacterial contamination has been detected in 22 veterinary pet food brands including Iams and Eukanuba pet food formulas for dogs and cats. Pet owners should discard the tainted pet foods listed in this recall. Practice good personal hygiene as simply handling the pet food can transmit the Salmonella bacteria to humans. Dogs and/or cats that have become infected with Salmonella infections may show various signs including reduced appetite, fever and stomach pain. Diarrhea with or without blood along with a fever and vomiting may also occur. Pets infected that appear to be healthy may carry the bacteria and transmit the infection to other pets and people.

Zoonoses or Zoonotic diseases are those infections able to be transmitted between humans and pets.
