BROKEN BONES – DOGS
The most common cause of broken bones in dogs is automobile accidents. Fights between big dogs and little dogs can also end up causing broken bones. Other causes include falling from a table, bouncing from the back of a pick-up truck, and various diseases, including bone cancer. Sometimes, you can tell if your dog has a broken leg if he is holding it in an abnormal position, or if it is at an unusual angle or is very swollen. Most obvious of all is an open wound with a piece of bone, sticking out. Fractures are at high risk of becoming seriously infected. The dog may let you know he’s in pain by limping or being reluctant to put his weight on the particular leg, or he might just hold the leg up and not put any weight on it at all. Your dog may not want the leg to be touched, even by you.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
* If you suspect your dog’s leg is broken, immobilizing the leg with a splint helps prevent further injuries, especially if it is a long way to the vet. To make a splint, you can use a few pieces of newspaper, cardboard, or even a soft pillow will work. Wrap them around the fracture and try to include the joint above and below the break, then secure it with tape.
* You can also just tape the bad leg to the good leg. Be careful not to tape it too tight. This is called a mountaineering splint.
* A firm surface like a piece of plywood should be used to move any dog suspected of having a broken back or who has been hit by a car. If that’s not available, put him in a blanket. The goal is to move him with a minimal amount of motion.
(NOTE: A cast is one way to repair a broken leg.)
WHAT YOUR VET CAN DO
* Your vet’s goal to repair the fracture will be to reunite the pieces, restore full function, and end up with a normal appearance to the dog.
* The diagnosis of a fracture is made by taking an x-ray of the bones. Treatment can consist of using casts, splints, plates, or wires. Casts are made of fiberglass or plaster, but their use is limited. Since the joint above and below a break must be immobilized, a cast cannot be used for fractures involving bones of the hip or shoulder. They work best for simple fractures involving the lower part of a leg.
* If a fracture is too complicated to be repaired using a cast, stainless steel pins, wires, and bone plates can be used. Intramedullary pins are steel rods inserted inside broken bones to hold the pieces of bone together. The post-operative care requires limited exercise, such as leash walking, to prevent the pins from moving. The pins are left in until the fracture heals, generally four to eight weeks, then removed under local anesthesia.
Orthopedic wire can be used to put fragments of bone together or to anchor a bone to an intramedullary pin to make the repair more stable.
Stainless steel bone plates are screwed directly into the bone. Plates and screws can be used to repair broken bones with odd shapes, like the pelvis, or badly broken long bones of the front or hind legs. Bone plates are very expensive, but minimal post-operative care is needed. These dogs can use their legs almost immediately after the surgery and are pain free.
NOTE: An intramedullary pin holds the two ends of the broken bone in place.
COMPLEMENTARY TREATMENTS
HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES
Immediately after the injury has occurred, the use of Amica 30c not only relieves pain, but also helps reduce associated swelling. Give four doses every 15 minutes, until you can get the dog to the vet.
Symphytum 30c promotes healing of broken bones, for older dogs Calcarea fluorica 30c is often recommended as well. Talk to your vet about how often to give these therapies to your dog.
I answer all possible questions about broken bones at BrokenBoneAdvice.com.
Hi Dr.Carol
We live in a small town in Mexico near Puerto Vallarta so we have a pretty good family vet. Our 1,1/2 yr Lab Flor, was just hit 4 hours ago by a car. The local vet said her leg is pretty smashed up and needed X Rays and possibly set with pins. Unfortunately our PV vet is gone until monday. Do I need to Treat this ASAP or can it wait until Monday?
We have her stable and she is eating and drinking water.
Thanks Mark
My dog jumped of a high bed and we heard a little snap. She was holding it in a angle position and now she is walking fine. Do you think we need to take her to the vet in Colorado
Hi Maria,
I am glad she appears to be fine now. In general,, it is always best to contact your veterinarian when you have a specific concern regarding your dogs health! It is always better to be safe then sorry.
Best of luck,
Dr. Carol
Hello Dr.
I have a 12year old bully. 82lbs short and stalky. His name is Shorttie. We noticed he was limping last week but we thought he was just sore or inflamed from old age.. we took him into his dr 2 months ago for this (we thought). My husband and I left out of town for 4 days and Shorttie stayed with our son. He got worse.. was collapsing.. couldn’t walk and very swollen.. This is his right arm.. back of the arm.. between where the wrist bends.. his dr prescribed strong pain meds until we could take him in. We got home afew days later and it got worse.. very swollen and hard and hot. NOW THERE IS A OPEN WOUND WITH PUSS OOZING OUT THE HOle.. Is this from it being so swollen it needed a exit? Or is this hole and puss from a broken bone?? He will be going to his dr tomorrow I was going to er but they are all full capacity. How can I safely get him to the bathroom.. he won’t go. Do I wrap it even though it’s oozing ? Ice it?
THANK YOU
Hi Mark,
I would have the xrays taken now, review them with the vet and together make your decision accordingly. If I can be of further help please let me know.
Thank you

My small chihuahua was attacked by my foster American Staffer who is about 1 year old. She fractured his sternum and left him with multiple deep wounds, loss of blood too. After getting him stable, the ER vet he needed surgery. The vet called me and told me that his chest muscles were shredded and were difficult to repair and even if she could sow them up, he would not be able to breath on his own. I said to keep going and then his heart stopped and CPR several times could not get him back. Was it necessary to have surgery? Were the shredded muscles a deadly diagnosis?
I was able to get him away from the foster the second I grabbed the foster, but being so little, it looks like she damaged him badly.
I am heart broken wondering about the ifs of what I should have done and wondering if the vet did the right thing. I had kept my two small dogs away from the foster, but my sister opened the back door where i was with my 2 small dogs and the foster got out. I am totally depressed for not protecting my little guy. He was a rescue and so I had been rescuing other dogs, but now I regret it. I knew not to bring dogs in the house but could not find a rescue with a foster, so I had to foster for a rescue in order to help me get her adopted. She is now gone to another foster. What are shredded muscles in the chest? Thank you for your time.
Tulum
What a nightmare! Hopefully things have improved. Shredded muscles refers to damaged tissue likely resulting from the
encounter with the other dog.
Muscles generally heal pretty well so your little one should return to normal

What is the success rate of pinning vs plates. Or rather, what is the complication rate of each approach? Thanks.
Hi Alice,
Each approach and its results are dependant upon the exact case. I am glad to discuss this with you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Last night our 8 lb mixed terrier fell off in the dark a 10 foot high deck – we have had her to vet this morning for xrays – she has fractured her left front “elbow” . We have 3 options – take to specialist on Monday for pins or amputation, or euthanize her here. The breaks look quite complicated. How well does an small animal recover from pins? How do small animals do with only 3 limbs? My husband feels we will never have the lively little character we had before again and she would not have quality of life. It would be awful to decide to put her down. Your thoughts please?
Hi Lynn,
Small dogs, like yours, in my experience heal quite well even with rest and stabilization of the fractured elbow. You do have options available for her and I do not recommend putting her to sleep. You can let her rest and wait to see the specialist. You may consider surgically repairing her elbow, or you can have her leg amputated and she will do just fine on 3 legs. If the cost is a problem try stabilization of her elbow with a splint and bandage and rest for a few weeks and you might be suprised at how quickly she heals and well she will do. Eventually she will probably develop arthritis in that joint but there are many effective arthritis supplements available for you to use when and if that becomes an issue. I am glad to talk to you and offer my help. I am available at 1-866-372-2765.

Dr. Carol,
Last night our cairn terrier was hit. All internal organs and fine. He has a broken hip with several smaller
bones broken around it. We took him to the vet then was
transported to a doggie ER. First, we hear he needs pins
and screws.. then they said it could heal on its own. We
are so confused. They have been not so nice to us since
we love our dog dearly but are looking out for unnecessary costs. At one point the doctor said if we continue with “our attitude” they will put off our dog’s surgery as long as they can.
deb
Hi Deb,
Depending on the type of fracture and the age ad health status of your dog you will have various options for repair. If the fractre is not fragmented and the hip bones are still aligned properly, with rest these usually heal just fine. If there are pieces of bone out of place, then you may need to consider plates and/or pins for repair. You are welcome to email me the xrays and I am glad to help you. You may also want to get a second opinion. I am available online at chagrinfallspetclinic.com or you can call me toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Hi Dr. Carol! I was reading on your write up about dry skin in cats. I am worried for my cat has patches of hair missing and has been chewing on one part. Ok looks like what you say because being an indoor cat. What I’d like to know I have omega-3 Jamieson 1000mg. Could this help my cats dry skin problem and how much is safe to give her? thanks diane cat:; Princesse
Hi Diane
I would give her 250mg daily of the omega 3’s. PAAWS is also a very good comprehensive supplement for dry skin in cats and is available online at chagrinfallspetclinic.com. I am also glad to talk to you and offer suggestions:mt toll free number is 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you,
Dr. Carol
Hi Carol thanks for replying. So if I give just a bit more would it be ok? For its 1000mg of omega 3 and its a capsule. thanks
Hi Diane
Yes that should be fine. If your cat gets loose stool and/or diarrhea then reduce the dose.
Thank you,
Dr. Carol
Hi Dr. Carol. I got something cheaper. Hopefully its ok. Its flax oil rich in omega 3. Its liquid so easier to give . Its 1tablespoon for an adult how much do I give to a 14lbs cat? thanks diane
Hi Diane,
Try adding a teaspoon into your cats kibble daily. PAAWS is a nutritional supplement that contains omega 3,6 essential fatt acids and 45 other natural ingbredients which would cause a visible improvement in your cat in 30 days and cost you less than a dollar a day. My pup took a nasty fall on the ice earlier today he didn’t yelp or act like anything was bothering him, I checked him out moved his legs and he seemed fine. On our way back into the house he slipped on the outside steps and I caught him before he fell again. After that slip he took the steps slow and seemed fine. But about 3 hours later he started favoring the leg that he fell on outside, no yelping and he doesn’t mind me touching it and rubbing it. Do you think it’s just sore or worse? He’s been walking for short periods and I wrapped the leg with card board and tape and have been alternating ice and heat. What should I do? I’m overseas and the Vet said not to worry he’ll be fine but I would like your opinion.
Hi Laura,
Chances are if your pup is doing better, he will heal and be fine. If you could tell me which leg was involved, as well as the age, weight and current status of your pup’s walking ability, I can give you a more accurate opinion. Should you want to speak with me, I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you,
Dr. Carol
Dr. Carol,
He is a 6 month old Boxer pup, it was his back right leg. He can walk up and down the stairs and moves around the house pretty well but after a walk downstairs and outside he lays down for a few hours, he will still let me move his leg with no yelping, but he wimpers in his sleep where he didn’t before. He’s around 55 lbs. He also kicks his leg while he sleeps and when I put ice on it. He puts little pressure on it and sometimes lifts it completely when he walks. Thank you for Your Help!!
Hi Laura,
It sounds like he may have torn, stretched or injured the stifle joint(knee)ligaments and/or menisci in his hind leg, which is why he holds his leg up. In many cases rest will heal this but I would have your vet take a look to be sure.
Thank you,
Dr. Carol
Dr. Carol, I have a pup who first broke is upper femur when four months old from a short fall. It was pinned and took about two months to heal. He was up and moving, but barely using the leg. Now two months later broke the same leg by the ankle. One vet suggested that we amputate the leg (an emergency vet since in happened on a weekend). Our normal vet says that the leg would need to be pinned again and it would be another 6 to eight weeks for the new brek to heal. She is suggesting that because the pup is so young, and it doesn’t look like any cancer issue is involved that we again pin and fix the leg. My concern is that I will be returing to the vet every two months with another broken leg. It was very hard on our boy the first time around no contact with the other dog for fear of re-injuing. Very little time outside which he loves during the whole process. The other issue is that since he broke the leg we have been having separation issues, which we didn’t have before. I am afraid that this issues will get worse, and I hate to see him go through another two months locked in-side. He has never really used the leg after the first break other than for an occasonal crutch. On the other side would he be happier and healthier with fixing the leg. Would he ever be able to play with the other dog again, or would we always have to keep them separated in fear of another break. Will he gain use of that leg back. He has never bent the leg since the first break.
Tak you,
Dear Jeanine,
I am so sorry your pup has has been through such distress. I would prefer to talk with you so I can get more information about your dog and can then give you more useful advise. What breed of dog is he and what does he weigh? If you have your x-rays on a CD, I can review them by e-mail. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Dear Dr. Carol
I live in Thailand and a dog that we love was hit by a motorcycle last night and we took her to vet and xray showed that both back legs are badly damaged. Vet was concerned about bladder damage too, so he put her on IV fluid last night and this morning she still had not urinated. He says he will insert something today to help her urinate, but if she cannot, then in about 1-2 more days he will operate. Are we waiting too long for surgery on bladder? I am worried she’ll die if not treated sooner. What is the normal practice? Thank you. Vanessa
Hi Vanessa,
The vet can take xrays, both plain and with contract to determind if the bladder is intact. Ultrasound is also very useful. The vet is most likely inserting a urinary catheter. It is normally quite simple to determind, whether or not the bladder is damaged. If I can be of further help please let me know. I am available at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you & Best Wishes

Dr. Carol,
I have a 10 month old toy poodle that weighs about 3.5 pounds. She has broken both of her front legs, around wrist area, in the past 6 months…with the latest break being today. The first break was due to falling out of the bed whereas the latest break was due to her jumping off the couch…we have steps for her but she chooses not to use them. She landed wrong and broke the bone. This alarms me because it wasn’t that high up and it is a feat she performs hundreds of times in a night since she is a super active dog. Is this a common event in dogs her size? IS there any supplement I can give her to help her build stronger bones? RIght now we feed her purina puppy chow and give her some puppy vitamins that are packaged like a gel. This is my wife and I’s very first pet and she is like our child so it scares me that she is having so many large health problems such as this so early on. I feel like the worst parent ever! Thanks for your help!
Hi Hunter,
I am sorry your poodle has experienced such unfortunate injuries.
This is not common but with proper care, diet and supplementation she should grow up to be fine and enjoy a normal life. I would consider putting her on a natural or organic diet such as Prairie or Neumans organics, for supplements consider PAAWS. For more information on diets and supplements log onto chagrinfallspetclinic.com or chagrinfallspetclinic.com. I am available to talk to you. My toll free number is 1-866-372-2765. I am also glad to work with you.

Dr. Carol,
i have a 1 1/2yr old chiwahwah, a couple days ago she jumped off the couch, and she started yelping a lot and favoring her left back leg. she was favoring that leg for a couple hours then she seemed fine. But these past few things anything that buts into her leg makes her yelp and then she’ll start favoring that leg again. When I tried to feel her leg or to massage it she kept nipping me in the hand, not hard, but enough to tell me she doesnt want me touching it becase it hurts her. Looking at it, it seems fine until she tries to walk on it. it looks like it bends at an awkwerd angle for a second right after she tries to put weight on it. I dont know if she sprained it or maybe dislocated a joint. I dont have any money to take her to a vet and I’m very worried about her. Please help, thank you.
Hi Elizabeth,
The hind knee joint or stifle in your dog’s leg, has cruciate ligaments which may be torn, stretched or damaged. I would rest her for a few days and if she is not better check with your vet.
Thank you,
Dr. Carol
My 5/6 month old pit bull puppy had a pretty bad fall off my bed.She yelped and yelped and bit my husband when he tried to touch her. This happened about 3 hours ago. he wont get up for very long at a time. She whines when we touch her right hind leg, but only when we try to lift it. We felt the leg from paw to hip, kind of squeezing as we went and no noise. But when we lift it, it hurts her. When she stands she wont put ANY weight on it or even put it down all the way. Ideas as to what might be wrong?
Dear Erica,
I would see how your pup is today and if she is still favoring her leg take her to your vet. She may have just scared herself and be sore from the fall or she may have injured her hind knee and or leg. If I can be of further help please call me toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Dr. Carol-
Our 14-year-old 50 pound lab-spaniel mix dog fell and has a clean break in her rear femur (based on ER x-ray). She is home and whimpering in a lot of pain, even with a fentanol patch. We haven’t seen her regular vet yet. What is the likelihood that she will do well in surgery for repair? She has been healthy and peppy in her old age, just a little arthritic and a little shakey on the legs. But she walked every day and is playful between naps. It just seems so sad to have to say good-bye so abruptly after this accident, but can she recover and regain her happy life from such a surgery?
One of our puppies that was born in november fell off the side of our porch when we were letting them out to go potty. We dont know how she fell off but now we hold him and he sits there either holding it up… but then acouple minutes later he will relax it. We cant tell whats wrong. Any ideas?
Hi Amanda
It sounds like he injured his leg or his stifle ligament over his hind knee may be loose and causing his hind leg to lock. I would check with your vet.If I can help please give me a call at 1 866 372 2765.
Thank you
Dr. Carol
Hi Sharon,
He should be able to recover and be a happy dog again. I would see your vet and get his leg fixed. Supplements such as PAAWS will also help him recover more quickly. I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1 866 372 2765.

Hi Dr. Carol,
I have a 3 week old wolf hybred. I got him when he was 3 hours old as the owner of the pup called to ask what to do with a new born pup if the mother doesnt want it. I went over and the mother was only 8 1/2 months old and scared of the pup. I was very upset that we could not get the mother to let the pup suck and the pup was kinda frozen as the owner had just left it in the dirt outside. I took the puppy home and put it on a heating pad and the fed it with an eye dropper. hours later he was sucking from a baby bottle like a pro. He will be 3 weeks old on Feb 8 and is almost 4 1/2 pounds. He is very healthy and is starting to play and seems very happy. Although I noticed that his right rear ankle looked funny when he tried to start walking and after several days of watching I realized that it is broke at the ankle and he has very limited movement in it. I spoke to the owner of the mother and he said that he had scooped him up in the shovel to throw him in the trash on the day he was born, but then the puppy moved and he put him back in the dirt. he crushed his leg with the shovel and never told me until now. His leg has looked kinda funny since I got him, but I just thought it was because he was a new born. What is the likelihood of being able to fix a leg right in the joint and at such a very young age. The pups name is Albert and he never got any colostrum from his mother or antibodies and I am afraid of him catching something at the vets office as he is to young for shots. Please advise as to what you think would be best for Albert. I know he will get the care he needs – I will see to that. I just have major fear of exposing him to disease at the vets office. And please let me know the success rate of an ankle joint being repaired in a young puppy.
Thank you,
Melinda
Hi Melinda,
I would not be afraid to take him to your vet. He should be checked and your vet will be able to recommend the best way to repair his ankle which should heal just fine. To improve his health and promote wellness and healing I suggest you consider a good vitamin-mineral supplement such as PAAWS for Puppies, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com.

Dr. Carol,
I have an 8 year-old blind, diabetic lab who broke a (?) on a human it would be a metacarpal, on his left front paw. It broke in 4 places like the letter x across the bone. Due to a slip on the ice lat year, his hind legs and hips are not able to support him on 3 legs. Our options are to wait it out or put pins in the toe. I’m very concerned about putting him under but don’t want him to suffer with a splint for months on end. He’s a typical life-loving active lab. Suggestions?
Hi Marissa,
I would keep his paw splinted and try to avoid surgery no risk anesthesia for now. Consider supplements to help build up his hips and hind legs and promote healing of his fracture such as VitaLife along with and Dr Carol’s Hip & Joint Support,(available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com) and I think you will be suprised at how quickly he will heal.
I am glad to talk with you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Hi Dr. Carol,
I’m so glad I found this website! I have a 7 month old Chihuahua who has apparently fractured the epiphysis of his left femoral head… The first vet thought it was a muscle strain/sprain but after a week my Chi was still favoring his leg so I took him in again to take an x-ray this time. The vet suggested I try the ‘rest’ approach for several weeks to see if he starts healing on his own before taking the invasive operation route. For the next month or so I’m going to be giving my dog symphytum in the hopes of facilitating the healing process. I’m wondering if you have any advise for me regarding the whole ‘rest’ schedule and what your prognosis would be. As I said he’s a 7 month old Chihuahua who currently weighs 3.5 pounds. He’s very healthy (except for the injury) and although he definitely is favoring the leg and mostly hops around on his three other legs, when walking slowly he does appear to be able to put weight on the injured leg. It’s a struggle to keep him quiet as he is as energetic and good natured as ever–based on his actions and character, he doesn’t seem to be any pain. His appetite and thirst don’t seem to have been negatively impacted at all. Any advise or suggestions you may have would be GREATLY appreciated. Anyway that I can immobilize the leg so that he can’t walk on it? I love the little guy and am worried about him and want to make the best decisions for him… thank you again in advance for your help!
Hi Emile,
I agree that your pup should rest and be reckecked with xrays in 4 weeks. Puppies usually heal quickly and with nursing care, a good natural diet and a vitamin-mineral supplement, such as PAAWS, which will help to promote new bone growth, his fracture should heal without surgical intervention. I am glad to talk with you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you,
Dr. Carol
Hi, Dr. Carol
I have just left the vet’s office, where I left my 9 mth old Rottie. He had broken his left hind leg. The vet said the best solution is to have a bone plate put in. This surgery is very expensive because I live on a fixed income. Is there a cheaper yet still good solution. I may have to have him put down because of the high cost of surgery.
Hi Maria,
Your alternative is to have his leg splinted and then rest him for several weeks and have him rechecked. I recommend a healthy natural diet and a good supplement to promote healing such as PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com. Since he is young, he should heal and recover well. I am glad to talk with you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

My moms 3 ear old pitbull and my sisters pitbull got into a fight and now my moms dogs right front leg is crushed, I know at least broken in several places. My mom does not have the money for the costly surgery. The vet splinted and wrapped the leg. After thinking about it we took her home. I was wondering if you could tell me if it would be possible to leave the leg splinted and let it heal on its own. Will it heal to where she can walk on it? I can send you the xray that they put on a disk for us.
Hi Chrissy,
It is hard for me to comment on this until I see the xray. You can email me the xray at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com.
Many fractures, even those that are displaced will heal with rest. Arthritis will likely become an issue for her.
Lets review the film and make decisions accordingly.
Thank you,
Dr Carol
My 8.5 year old small dog (about 7.0 KGS) was bit by another dog and her leg was completeley broken off, just above her wrist. This happened November 20th and she has been in a soft ‘Robsons’ cast (or something like that) since then. Her vet says she is healing very slowly, and now 3 months later she has told us to prepare for the possibility of her losing her leg. We have kept her fairly immobilized as the vet suggested and give her calcium supplements daily. Please let me know if there is something we can do to avoid this possibility. She has healed about 40% in the 3 months. I should say when she was first brought ito the vet’s office, the possibilty of pins and a plate was discussed, but we were told the possibility of success, due to her size and the nature of her break, was very low. I really do not want my dog to lose her leg, or even part of her leg. Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.
Dear Kirsten,
I would get a 2nd opinion from a board certified internist. I also recommend a supplement to boost her internal immunity, in addition to the calcium supplements, and promote healing. PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com is a very good supplement. If she should have to have her leg amputated, due to her small size she will be able to enjoy a good life and be able to get around pretty well. I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

We have an almost 12 yr old Chocolate LAb. He weighs over 75 lbs. We took him to the vet because he was panting constantly at night. He would walk around the house like he was in another world. The vet gave us glycosemine for his hips. No xrays were ever taken. He seemed to be sleeping better. The chewables ran out and we started giving him 1 bayer aspirin at night. The next day and days after he wanted to play this cloth squeeky toy bone. He acted as if that was a fix. He never wanted to playwhen he was taking glycosimine. aIt was time for our 2 dogs yearly checkup and i explained to the vet what has happened, taking him off glycosimine and just giving him an aspirin. She scolded us saying aspirin can cause liver damage. She put him on a anti inflamatory. It started with a p, maybe previox Im not sure. He doesn’t want to play, he acts like he is really sore. Is it true you can’t give a dog aspirin every day? What do you recommend?
Hi Janet
Aspirin is not good for dogs. It can cause stomach ulcers. It sounds like the peroxicam is not agreeing with him so I would stop it. I would ask your vet to run a senior health blood profile(CBC, profile and a urinalysis)Is he on any other medications? Is he still panting? Panting can be caused by many things-pain, certain medications, nerves, respiratory problems etc Xrays are a good idea. I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1 866 372 2765.

Hi Dr.Carol,
I have a 20lb puggle and she feel down are apartment stairs and is limping on her back right leg and wont put any presure on it. She really isn’t whining much in pain but I don’t know if I should take her to the vet or not
Thanks
Ashley
Hi Ashley
I would take her to your vet to be sure she is ok.
She may have injured her hinds knee-called the stifle.
If I can help further please let me know.
Thank you,
Dr. Carol
What can you give a dog for pain?
Hi Jackie,
Can you please tell me the source of the pain and I can make a recommendation. Do not give aspirin. I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Hi Dr Carol
About four days ago my puppy of about 3 months was run over by a car. he had not serious damage, only a fracutred femur bone. They vets have been keeping him in Cage rest and suggest that i dont see him as he could hurt it again if he gets too excited. How long do they normally have to keep the dog before he can be discharged?
Thank you
Cynthis
Hi Cynthia,
I would call your vet and ask what the time frame is that he recommends. You might also want to get a 2nd opinion from another vet;perhaps a board certified orthopedic surgeon. Puppies, with proper fixation and rest usually heal quickly, a 2-3 month time frame, along with a good diet and supplements to promote healing such as PAAWS. I am glad to talk to you and can look at the x-rays.
Thank you
Dr Carol
Hi Dr. Carol,
My dog had his leg caught in the doggy fence last week, with him struggling and trying to run, he fractured it. The fracture is his pelvic bone on the left side. I took him to the vet and took some x rays. The vet said that the fracture does not require an operation, but will need cage rest for several weeks. It’s been a week and he is still walking on 3 legs, not using his back left leg at all. Is that normal? He is around 4 years old and is in healthy condition otherwise. Also, do I have to cage him 24 hours a day or is it okay if I let him get around a bit when I am home. It’s freaking me out and I hope he won’t have complications to follow.
Hi Catherine
Your dog should heal up and be just fine. With age he most likely will develop some arthritis in that area but thats nothing for you to worry about now. I agree with what your vet said. Your dog needs rest, and cage rest will help him heal more quickly. When you are home it’s fine to let him out a bit. You might consider adding a good supplement to his diet such as PAAWS which will help his body heal. I am glad to review the x-rays and also happy to talk with you.I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765. Have a wonderful holiday.
Thank you,

I have a 7 month old doberman pincher. about a week and a half ago, he had surgery for a serious broken femur bone. He had external and internal pins put in. He was walking on it at first a bit and they had me remove the bandage 72 hours later, but now is screaming in pain every 10-20 minutes, mostly during the night. He had by accident laid down on the side where the pins are and has been doing worse ever since. After that I took him into the vet again and they re-wraped it. He is now not putting any pressure on it at all and yelps like I said every 10-20 minutes, he is up almost all hours of the night. The vet had me giving him 2 pills of tramadol everyday but has now ordered me to give him 2 pills 3 times a day for pain. Is he just sore because he has layed down on the side where the pins are sticking out? they took more x-rays and said everything is still in place but i’m worried and wondering if he may just be sore or what could be going on???
Hi Holli
I would get a 2nd opinion from another vet as this does not sound normal to me either. I am also glad to review the xrays and talk with you. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Dr. Carol,
My 10 month old cat was hit by a car yesterday and badly broke his left front leg above the elbow. The emergency vet states the nerve is doing well and wants me to transfer him to a specialist in Seattle WA to have a plate put in his leg. I live an hour and half away from Seattle and was wondering if putting a plate in a cat’s leg requires a specialist. How common is it for the average vet to repair a broken bone with a plate?
Would amputating his leg reduce the quality of his live much more than the surgery? Money is an issue
Thank-you,
Becky
Hi Becky
Since your cat is young he will heal and enjoy a good life. I agree with your vet that a specialist is best qualified to plate the fracture and the drive will be well worth your time and effort. I would not recommend amputation as that will reduce his quality of life. Since finances are an issue, consider getting a 2nd opinion from another vet,as there are several options that can be used to repair the fracture that would be much less costly. Stabilization of the fracture with a splint, rest, a healthy, natural or organic diet and a vitamin supplement, such as PAAWS, to promote healing will be very helpful for your cat. I am glad to review the x-rays and offer my suggestions. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Aloha Dr Carol
My daughter’s dog Mucca is a mini daschund weight at appx. 5 lbs was thrown down by a room mate’s brother.
She immediatly took he to the vet in which they took x-rays and sedated her and wrapped her back right ankle. We later found out that she had four fractures and they would like to put a plate in at the cost of appx. $4000.00. My daughter nor I can afford this cost so we asked the Veternarian opinion, he also said that we could cast it for 4 weeks and xray it again to see how it is healing . Do you think this is a okay idea? We are hoping it is for the cost is minimal and its not as invasive. I would appreciate your opinion on this.
Regards
Nan
Hi Nanette,
Yes casting Mucca’s leg sounds like a good, cost effective alternative. It is likely Mucca will develop arthritis at some point later in life but that can be managed. To promote healing I recommend rest, a healthy natural or organic diet and a vitamin supplement such as PAAWS, to boost immunity and speed the healing process. I am glad to review the x-rays and help you further. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Hi Carol,
I have six pound male chihuahua who is seven years old. He broke both front legs when he was about 10 months old. The break was above both wrist joints and both clean breaks. We chose not to try to pin/plate the bones due possible complications and expense. We had little sucess from splinting the legs and did so for more than ten weeks. Eventually the vet recommended taking the splints off since there wasn’t as much progress as he hoped and he felt this might force a bit more healing. He did improve and he was very active for the first two years. But over time his legs have become more knotty and calcified and he has become less active. Just this past year they have gotten worse and for the last several weeks he has been favoring one leg. The vet gave him some sterioids to help w/inflamation. I am considering getting him a prosthetic cart to help keep him off his front legs more and provide relief to his back. Also I saw a site online for custom made orthotics for dogs. Do you think the orthortics could be of any benefit at all? I am hoping they might prevent his legs from getting any worse. I could send you some pictures of him if you think this would help.
Thank you for your time.
J. Johnston
Hi Jesse,
I can help you and am glad to talk with you.
Prosthetic carts are helpful for dogs with minimal to no use of their hind legs and orthotics may or may not be a consideration depending on his exact situation.
A goog supplement such as VitaLife, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com, along with the Hip & Joint Support product would definately help him. They should improve his mobility, relieve his discomfort and eliminate the need for steroids so that he is happy and eliminate theneed for a cart or orthotics.

First, I would like to thank you for your website. There are a ton of “parents” that want to be educated before taking their baby to see the doctor.
I was in a lawn chair and my 3yr old, 3lb chihuahua jumped up onto my chest and fell backwards before I could catch her. I would guess she jumped up 2.5 to 3ft and landed on the concrete patio.
Could a fall like that break a bone? Is it possible that she is just bruised or sprained?
She spending the night in her pet taxi…but when I set her on the grass to “go”…she hops around on three legs. She only yelps when a spot the size of a dime is touched…on the “heel” of her foot. Her foot is swollen and do not see any signs of blood collecting
Thanks again,
Trenda Joy Osborne
Hello,
I have a 6 year old pointer lab mix he escaped out the front door yesterday and found out a few hours later that he had been hit by a car and fractured both his tibia and fibia on his back leg they said it was a nasty fracture and that they could put a metal plate in it, put pins and wire in it, or amputate depending on what my financial situation is it is my decision. Its sad to say but I am a single mother with limited income and they said it would be about $500 for amputation and $1000 for the pins and wire. This is a big difference to me I would feel like such a bad mom if I could save his leg for $500 extra and decided on amputation, would it be silly to amputate?
i HAVE A 7 WEEK OLD GREAT DANE PUP MY DAUGHTER STEPPED ON HER PLAYING AND HAS BROKEN HER LEG IN 3 SPOTS , THE LIL GUY IS IN PAIN THE VET PUT A CAST ONLY COULD GET ONE BONE TO LINE UP I DO NOT HAVE 2000 TO SPEND ON SURGERY AT THIS TIME WHAT SHOULD I DO I WOULD HATE TO EUTHINZIE HIM HE IS VERY SWEET
My 14 month old german sheppard was hit by a car, it has 3 breaks in its femur one and a broken pelvis…..they sugest surgery with plates….i really can not afford this. What else can we do
Thank You
Hi Rachael
You might get a 2nd opinion. I can also review the xrays for you. Since finances are a concern, if there is a veterinary school/hospital near you they will work with you monetarily and can offer multiple options for fixation of the fracture without amputating his leg. As a last resort a splint and rest, along with a good diet and supplements to promote healing such as PAAWS are valid options. If you would like to talk I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you,
Dr Carol
Hi Jessica,
Youe puppy will heal even if you just give him rest and supportive care. He will develop arthritis in the future but that can be dealt with at that time. You do not need to euthanize him. Be sure his diet is healthy and give him a supplement to promote healing such as PAAWS. I am glad to help you and am available toll free at 1-866-372 2765.

Dr Carol
Hi Lynne,
Please keep me posted on your dogs progress and I am glad to help at any time
Thank you
Dr Carol
Hi Joy,
I would let her rest for a day and if she still is pain take her to your vet. It is likely that she just scared herself and with rest will be fine. She could have pulled a ligament in her hind leg, at her stifle joint which is common and results in hopping on 3 legs, then they toe touch with the leg. This will heal with rest and a little time. If you’d like to talk let me know.

Good Afternoon Dr. Carol,
I have a 16 month old male snorkie mix. He was hit my a vehicle over the weekend. We took him to the vet immediatly after the accident occurred. The vet called and said he has a broken hip joint and his leg is broken is 4 places. He will undergo surgery later this afternoon. I failed to ask several questions due to lack of time of being at work. Will my pet be back to himself once everything is back to normal? The vet said something about plates and also pins on the outside for like 6 to 8 weeks? I have several other pets also how long should I keep him separated for the others?
Hi Juanita,
Once the surgery is over, your vet should give you specific aftercare instructions. Always ask your vet any question’s you have so you feel comfortable taking care of him. In general after a surgery like this, dogs need to have a period of rest usually 6-8 weeks, during which time being sepatated from your other pets may prove beneficial. After that, external pins are usualy removed by your vet and the fracture healing is monitored by periodic x-rays. He should be back to “himself” within a week or two post op. Consider feeding him a healthy natural or organic diet and a good supplement, such as PAAWS to promote healing and boost internal immunity.
I am glad to talk and review x-rays with you. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

I have a Chocolate Lab who is almost 10 months old. Just today he got hit by a car. My husband and I rushed to Columbus Animal hospital, where they took x-rays of his chest, hip, and pelvis. Our dog broke a small pelvic bone where the leg and hip meet, meaning he wouldn’t be able to put any wieght on his left leg at all. The vet told us that he will proberbly need pins to keep the bone together and would cost anywhere between $2,000.00 – $3,000.00 dollars, which we do not have. My question is, if we put a splint on our dog’s leg where he can’t put any weigt on, will the leg heal on its own, as long as the leg rests. If so how long should we expect to have to splint on our dog. Is there any advice that you can give us to better care for our Mikie… He means the world to us.
Thank you Dr. Carol Osborne…
Elizabeth Michelle
Dear Elizabeth,
It doesn’t sound like the fracture is located in an area where a splint is a viable option. Most pelvic fractures in a young dog will heal on their own with rest, a healty organic or natural diet and a supplement like PAAWS to promote healing and boost internal immunity. If you wouild like to talk I can review the x-rays and offer specific suggestions.

My daughter has a Italian Greyhound who is 6 months old. Three weeks ago, on Easter Sunday my husband stepped on the dog and broke it’s front right radius. We took it to the vet and it was x-rayed and splinted. Today 3 weeks later the vet x-rayed the leg again and the bones are not healing. It looks like knuckles are forming on each half of the break. He suggested waiting yet another week and then we could decide if we wanted surgery to possibly save the leg. Should we wait? Could it still heal?
Thank You
Hi Sandy,
I would take your dog and the x-rays to another vet; preferably a board certified orthopedic veterinary surgeon and get a 2nd opinion. The fracture should have started to heal within 3 weeks. i am glad to review the x-rays for you if you have athem on a cd and also glad to talk to you. Be sure your dog is on a healthy natural or organic diet, such as homemade, Prairie by Natures Variety or Newmans Own Organics(available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com) and consider a supplement like PAAWS to boost internal immunity and promote healing.

My boxer and my rat terrier were playing last night and my boxer stepped on the rat terrier. He was no longer walking on his hind right leg. I was able to move his leg in whatever position I chose without any complaint from him. I even checked his pay to see if there was something in it. Nothing. So I took him to the vet today and just recently got a call from them saying it was to swollen to do x-rays today but, they think it’s either dislocated or he broke the ball off his femur. If he did break the ball off his femur they will need to do surgery to remove the ball and saw the femur…??? I’m a bit confused by all of this…Any suggestions or ideaw? Do you know about how much a surgery like that would cost? He is my baby as we have no children. Please help???
Hi Regina,
There are many options available to you depending on what the x-rays actually reveal. First, don’t panic. Lets see what the x-rays show then if you let me know I will be glad to review the films for you, offer my advise and suggestions. If the head of his femur is fractured, (it would be very rare for it to break off)repair is not that difficult and in many cases rest with good supportive care will heal the femoral head fractures. I will give you altenative treatment options and advise you on approximate costs, once we have a diagnosis. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Dr. Carol,
My 5 yr old, 14.8 lb pekingese took a slight tumble down the last 4 or 5 stairs while racing to get the mail coming through the front door mail drop two days ago. My guess is she got over excited the lost her step. Since then, she seems to favor her right front leg. If she walks slowly, she does not seem to limp. But if she tries to trot a little faster, she limps. She does not cry when I touch it, but she is definitely resting alot more than usual. Can you tell me if you think it is broken and if I should take her to the vet tomorrow.
Hi Marie
Yes if she is still tender today I would take her to your vet just to be sure she is ok. If I can be of further help please let me know.
Thnak you
Dr Carol
Dr. Carol,
Thank you for your reply. She is slightly better today, but just very slightly, so I have scheduled an appointment with my regular vet for tomorrow morning. Am I wrong to assume that if it is nothing more than a slight sprain, it should be completely better by now (3 days) which of course it is not?
Hi Marie,
Taking her to your vet is a wise decision. Most likely it is a sprain or strain but once she sees your vet you’ll be sure. Please let me know the result and if I can help you further just let me know.

Hi Dr. Carol,
Even though my dog seemed much better last night, I took Ling-Ling to her vet today. She wasn’t limping anymore but, it seems that she had some redness around her 3rd. right digit, tenderness at the site, and also a swollen lymph gland on the right side of her neck. Her vet put her on an antibiotic and also an anti-inflamatory. So, I guess this goes to show that you never really know until you see the vet. The whole time I was thinking that it was going to be a sprain/strain or possibly a small fracture and it turns out she must have pulled/jammed her toenail on the carpet on the stairs when she went after the mail coming through the mail slot. Thank you for all of your help as well.
Hi Marie
I am glad Ling-Ling is going to be fine! It’s always a good idea to check with your vet whenever you have a question about your pet and in your case it worked out very well.
Thank you

My 15 year old cat went missing for three days and when he came back he had a froken rear femur. I took him to the vets and the x ray showed a clean break. This has now been pinned and he is supposed to get cage rest for at least 2 weeks. He is currently caged but he will insist on attempting to walk on the leg. I am worried that he will displace the pinned bone. Also he hates the cage and is becomming quite distressed. His stitches are due to be removed in 8 days but already he has started having a go at them. I have a collar which he gets off despite it being tight. How can I car for him I am going mad he is usually an outdoor cat
Hi Emma,
The pinned fracture should be fine if your cat moves and walks a little. Instead of the cage perhaps try giving him his own small private room, with some soft music, food and water. Then he can move around a little and not feel so stressed. You could buy a baby t-shirt and put it on him. This may help to take his attention off his stitches, if he fusses at the stitches you can spritz the area with a product like bitter apple to discourage this and remove the collar which distresses many cats.
You can also try a plug in pherome diffuser available on chagrinfallspetclinic.com- you just plug it into the wall in his room and it will also naturally help to relax him. In addition 5-flower remedy, available on chagrinfallspetclinic.com-a couple drops added to his food, water or placed directly into his mouth will relax him naturally with no adverse side effects and can be used daily as needed. If I can help further I am available toll free at 1-866 372-2765.

I have a 10 yr old Rotti who is 65lbs. She somehow injured her right hind leg. She will not put any weight on it while running but will put minimal weight on it while walking (she will not put her foot fully on the floor and puts the weight on the tips of her toes). She will use the injured leg to get on the couch and will also sleep on the injured side. I have felt something pop in and out on the inside of her knee but other than that there is no swelling anywhere and it does not hurt her anywhere in the leg when I palpate it. She does not act like she is in pain and is eating and drinking normally. She has a vet appointment in two weeks for her yearly anyway just looking for your thoughts. Thank you.
Hi Becky,
It sounds like she injured the ligaments and/or menisci in her right hind knee which is called the stifle joint. With rest and anti-inflammatories this normally heals slowly. To help relieve the inflammation naturally consider a supplement like PAAWS, available online at chagrinfallspetclinic.com. Surgery is an option to repair a full tear of the ligaments, which does not sound like the case here, but I have seen poor results with that and do not recommend it. I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Tonight my girlfriend and I had to take our dog to a 24 hour clinic because she broke her leg somehow while rough housing inside our apartment. The x ray shows a break on the radius and ulna on her front right leg. It is a couple inches above her wrist. They wrapped in some sort of cast and basically said to see our vet in the morning. She insisted that surgery would be necessary. Since this is a very clean break and a very young dog (5 months), I would just like to know what info I should know so that I don’t get ripped off by a vet. Is surgery absolutely necessary, and if so how expensive does this usually run. Any answer will be appreciated. Thank you
Hi Ivan,
A clean, non displaced fracture like that may heal with a splint and rest. Depending on what the films show, surgery may or may not be required. In young dogs fractures usually heal quickly. See what your vet recommends and if you would like my opinion, I am glad to review the xrays. Costs for surgical repair will vary from a few hundred to a thousand plus dollars. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

A couple of months ago my miniature poodle broke her left hind leg due to jumping out the window of a moving vehicle. Due to cost we decided to take her to the vet in Mexico since we live only a couple of minutes away. The vet had placed two pins in her leg. After the surgery and time went on she would not put any pressure on it. A local vet had a look at her leg and said that the pin had fused itself to her knee and was causing her pain. He recommended that we take her back immediately and get the pin removed. We took her back a couple of days later and she had surgery once again. We picked her up a week later and the vet gaves us a description on what he had done. He said that since her bones were not fully devolped that he had to shave off some bone to make a canal where the knee cap sits due to the way the pin became enfused. Now a little less than a month later my dog still contines to limp and avoids putting pressure on her paw. What I have been observing is that her paw stays limp and looks pretty much lifeless. I tickle the bottom of her right paw and pull the fur between it and her leg reacts. I do the same on the leg that was broken and I don’t get the same response. Did the vet do more harm than good or am I over reacting?
Thank you

Hi Dr. Carol,
my name is dana,I’m 15 and my sister and i have a dog and we don’t know what is wrong with her…we can’t get to any vets for a while. But we don’t know exactly what happened, but our dog can’t move it’s back legs at all,and when you touch the bottom of her back beside her hips, she starts whining like she’s in alot of pain.
Do you know anything that could help?
thanks,
Dana and adrienne
Hi Dana,
I recommend you get your sister to help you take her to the vet today. She appears to be in considerable pain and since she can’t move her back legs something serious may be wrong. The sooner you find out the problem the quicker you can bring her relief and the faster she will heal. I am glad to help you, after she sees the vet and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you
Dr Carol
Hi Mark
You are not over-reacting. I recommend you take her to a vet in the US today-the sooner the better. The fact that she does not appear to feel sensation in her left hind leg may indicate the presence of nerve damage, which may or may not be permanent. I strongly urge you to take your dog to a vet in the US today! I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

yesterday I was driving on the interstate near where I live and came to a dog that had just been hit. It was laying on the side of the road. I pulled over to try and help and it tried to move away. Its back legs were injured and it couldnt walk at the time. I got it home and have cleaned up the minor bleeding from some scrapes. I didnt see it get hit, but the dog is walking now (one day later) with just three of its legs. Its back left hip is swollen and it is not being used at all. I cannot afford to take it to the vet….what can I do to help it recover? What do you think it could be…hip fracture or pelvis?
Dear Dr Carol,
We have an adorable 18 month old female pug. We got her when she was 6 months old from a breeder. We went to see a puppy, but fell in love with our pug, and the breeder seemed happy enough to let us have her. Our pug was limping a little bit and protecting her right hind leg, but the breeder said that it was just some rough play with the other dogs (including a larger dog). We took her home and she seemed fine after a little while so we didn’t follow up on this. She was fine for several months, although we did notice that she asked us to carry her up the stairs and sometimes did a bunny hop going downstairs.
Recently she started holding her right hind leg up and hobbling around and refusing to go up and down stairs etc. She doesn’t do this all the time only on occasion. To the best of our knowledge there has been no recent impact/fall/etc. We took her to the vet who had an x-ray done and found an old fracture of the right femur (head). He suggested that we focus on weight and pain management at this stage, and that she might just compensate for it and be fine in a few months. He also said that the fracture was quite severe so he wasn’t sure surgery would be helpful, and it would take 3 months for her to recover from the surgery. We are obviously very distressed at the thought that she might be in pain and have been in pain for the last several months (although she seemed chirpy and ate and played well, and didn’t let on that she was in pain). Is there anything else we can do? We don’t want to put her through a difficult surgery if it can be avoided, but we don’t want her to be in pain either. Anything you can suggest would be appreciated. Thank you. Lily
Hi Joe
It is hard for me to tell you if it is a facture of the hip or pelvis. It may or may not be broken. The dog needs to be taken to a vet for xrays to see what is wrong. If cost is an issue, then you might consider taking the dog to a local, shelter where they can take care of him and cover the vet costs. What you have already done is wonderful. Cleaning up the wounds and providing good nursing care and nutrition have already helped this dog. You are certainly to be commended for going out of your way to help this dog.If I can help further I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you
Dr Carol
Hi Lily,
First have your vet be sure that her right hind knee(the stifle joint) is intact and the ligaments are not torn or stretched which can cause very similar signs. In either case, consider a supplement such as PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com to help her with pain relief and promote normal mobility as well as boosting her internal immunity and overall wellness. I would not recommend further surgery on that leg. Most young dogs heal fine which is why I am concerned that her knee may be the real issue. If so rest, maintaining a lean body weight a along with a good supplement and natural, organic diet should help her to enjoy a normal life.
I am glad to talk to you and offer further suggestions. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Hi Dr.Carol,
I have a seven month old jack russell pup who got hit by a car. There were not internal injuries he was fine and stable. His back left leg was clipped and fractured in 4 places as well. Both his tibia and fibula along with a toe were broken. His tibia ended up coming out of his skin. The vet said at first it looked very bad and amputation may be an option. They then had clean his wounds and x-rayed him, we then got a call from the vet stating that she was much more optimistic about saving his leg and that pins would need to be used. The surgery will occur today 48 hours after the incident to see how his leg is healing with the swelling decreasing to see how the much “good tissue” is left. I am still very scared and do not know what will be the outcome. I don’t want him to lose his leg and I know the biggest concern is infection. How can I minimize the risk of infection? His dressing/bandages will have to be removed on a daily basis. What can I expect from this type of surgery? What steps should I take? Is there something I can give him to reduce the risk of infection? Please help.
Hi Manny,
Your dog should heal and enjoy a normal life.
Normally when a fracture is pinned there is no bandage on the leg. Your vet will prescribe antibiotics for the infection and the skin lesion will be sutured together. Your vet should give you detailed post op instructions for home care. Never be afraid to ask your vet any and all questions you have. If you are not completely confident in your vet, consider getting a second opinion from a veterinarian that is a board certified orthopedic surgeon before your vet operates. Once your dog comes home an organic, natural diet along with a good supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com, will promote healing and boost your dogs internal immunity. I am glad to review the x-rays and offer further suggestions. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Hello Dr. Carol,
I have a 4 yr old Min Pin who has been to our vet, we thought that he had somekind of a allergic reaction so he was treating him for that. It has been about 2 weeks now and I took him back to the vet, we think that he may have something wrong with his neck/ back. He eats and drinks very little, when he does get up and walks he looks like hunch back behind his front shoulders. He will yelp if you rub his neck and shoulder area. We have not had xrays done yet because we thought it was a reaction to something but that should have cleared up by now I would have thought. He walks very slowly and he is tipsy when he does walk. He seems to be a little better than the other day but he is still in a lot of pain and does not want to do anything but lay around. Not that we force him to do anything other than go outside a few times but we let him decide when he goes. If you ask him and he gets up then we take him out otherwise we let him rest. Can you give any suggestions? What can he be given for pain at home. The vet had given us some pain meds but those are gone, I am not sure how well they worked, even when he was taking those he still seemed to be in pain.
Hi Travis,
It sounds like he may have a “slipped disc” causing apinched nerve problem in his spine(back)causing him to walk with a hunched back and feel poorly. He needs x-rays of his spine to diagnose this. If this is the case usually a cource of anti-inflammatory medications (azium: the generic is called dexamethasone) are given intravenously and by mouth to relieve the pressure on the pinched nerve caused by the slipped disc and they also alleviate the pain. It is important to get this done ASAP so he doesn’t lose the nerve function permanently. A good organic diet and a supplement like PAAWS will also boost his immunity and promote healing and overall wellness.

Dr. Carol,
Another question that I forgot to mention, could this have been caused by our larger dog biting the little one? I have a Rott/ Shepard mix who has always been very playful with the little dogs but likes to mouth them. I am wondering if while playing the large dog might have gotten a little to rough? The Rott mix normally plays very well with the kids but can get a too rough with them if she gets really excited so I am wondering if the same is true with the Min Pin? Thanks for your help.
Hi Travis
Yes that could be the cause!
Thank you
Dr Carol
Hi carol,
I was playing with my cousins little chihuahua, when it suddenly jumped from my arms and landed on tile. It fell from about 4 feet and began limping on its rear left leg. I have a feeling it might be broken or severely sprained. Its in shock and cannot use the leg at all. It seems to be a little swollen. Am I looking at something really serious that is going to cost a lot of money? I feel so bad because I have three cousins (all girls) that love him to death. Please help.
Thank You,
Kyle
Hi Kyle,
Please take the dog to the vet asap so they can help him and figure out the problem. Once you have a diagnosis I am glad to talk to you and am available at toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Hi Dr. Carol –
I have a 7 pound, 7 month old min pin mix who jumped out of my arms tonight and broke her leg. I took her to the emergency vet clinic tonight and the x-rays they took revealed a distal radius/ulna fracture on her left limb. They have recommended that I schedule her for surgery to have a plate implanted, but that the cost will be around $3000 which I am unable to afford currently. They have sent her home with me tonight in a splint with rimadyl and tremadol for pain and swelling.
Is it possible to keep her in a splint for a few weeks to see if the fracture will heal or do you believe it would be absolutely necessary to schedule her for surgery? I do have a CD with her x-rays available.
Thank you so much for your time.
Hi Carol,
In a young dog like yours if the fracture is not displaced and is not involving the joint it should heal up nicely with rest and the splint. I am glad to review the x-rays. A good organic/natural diet and a supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com will help promote healing and boost internal immunity.
I am glad to help you further. I can review the x-rays on CD if you email them to me at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you,
Dr Carol
Hi Dr. Carol,
I have a twelve week old fini foxie x and last night the ironing board fell on top of her fracturing her elbor. I rushed her to the vet and she is going in for surgery tommorrow. I just wanted to know, what are the chances of her developing arthritis later in life (or even quickly after the operation) I am so worried about her, and the operation is very costlyy, I just wanted to check and see if I am doing the right thing?
Thanks
Joni
Dr.Carol,
I Have a 9 Month Old Pomeranian Who Fell Of The Couch Last Night And Broken 2 Bones In His Foot. We Went To The Vet And He Got A Splint On. He Keeps Moaning And The Vet Even Suggested Amputation Of The Leg If It Does No Heal.
Will It Heal ?
I Am Very Concerned.
hi,

Hi Dr.,
I am looking to possible adopt a dog from united yorkie rescue. He was surrened by his owner after jumping out of a window and fracturing his femur and growth plate. He has 5 pins in and had the surgery one month ago and is still having trouble using his leg. I have never met him this is just what I am reading on his updates. He can walk but just avoids using that leg. They said they might put him into physical therapy if he doesnt use it after the pins are taken out. He is only 9 months old, I am just wondering if I adopt him 2 months down the road, what if any complications would or could this break cause?
Hi Kristen
You could run into a variety of problems, including future surgeries and arthritis that could be very costly. If finances are not an issue and you have the time to commit thats fine but if you’re just looking for a great pet without future problems you might consider looking for another dog. I am glad to review the x-rays and talk to you. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you
Dr Carol
Hi Julie
He may have injured his hind knee, called the stifle joint and torn or stretched the ligaments. If this is the case and they are stretched but not torn they heal very slowly over several months. I would check with your vet and once you diagnoise the problem I am glad to offer suggestions. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you
Dr Carol
Hi Nicole,
Your dog is small and young so he should heal up fine and I definately do not recommend amputation. You might take your x-rays and get a 2nd opinion from another vet or from a board certified orthopedic veterinary surgeon.
I am glad to review the x-rays and talk to you. A good organic-natural diet and a supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com will boost his internal immunity and promote healing. Your vet should give you something to relieve his discomfort-you might call and ask him about that. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you
Dr Carol
Hi Joni
Your dog should heal up and be just fine after the surgery. Arthritis is a possible future complication but as long as the surgery is done well this should not become a major problem. If you are concerned you might want to get a 2nd opinion from a veterinarian who is a board certified orthopedic surgeon, unless a vet with those qualifications is currently doing the surgery. This is especially important because your dog is so young and his growth plated are still open. I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-0372-2765.
Thank you

Hi! I have an 11 year old mixed breed who is extremely overweight. In the last few days, he has begun favoring his right rear leg. As much as possible, he is keeping weight off of it and using it for balance only. He will let me touch him and only growls at me when I apply pressure to his foot. We have limited him to the first floor of the house but he still has to climb stairs to get out to the yard. He lays on the foot and his personality is unchanged. His appetite and water consumption are also unchanged. Should we just continue on the rest we have started or take him to the vet. His weight (over 100 pounds) makes him difficult to transport and it is stressful for him. Or, can you recommend something for us to give him to promote healing and manage any discomfort? Thank you!
Dr. Carol,
I have an 8 mo. old Golden Retriever, Harley, who broke his left rear leg on 4/29/08. The break is about 1 1/2 inches above the knee/behind the knee. On 5/2/08 the Dr. intalled a pin from the upper part of the bone, through the bone re-attaching the broken part. Harley was released from the hospital 1 week later on 5/9/08 and was still not putting any weight on this leg. Two days later he started curling his paw back/under and was in a lot of pain. I took him back to the Dr. at which time the x rays showed a new stress fracture in the upper part of this same bone. On 5/15 the DR. removed the 1st pin and is telling me that the 1st break is 50% healed. He however installed 2 new smaller pins to this area that will not be romoved.??? To repair new break he installed a bone plate, removed some bone marrow & did a bone graft from the front shoulder which he placed at this 2nd fracture to help it heal faster.??? Does this sound like the proper treatment for such injuries or do you think I should find a new Dr.?
Looking at the xrays from the 1st surgery the 1st pin appears too large for the bone & near the outside edge of the bone at the exact location of the second break. Harley is still at the hospital & his Dr. is telling me he should be released soon. They have his leg strapped to his body to limit movement & they have kept a catheter in to aviod soiling the bandage that is holding his leg still. I want to be sure that I am getting the proper treatment for my puppy and at this point I feel that this 2nd beak and surgery could have been avoided.
Also-is there a special diet or supplement that would help with Harley’s recovery? I have had dogs my whole life but, this is my 1st expeirnce with bone injuries.
Thanks,
Harley’s Mom-
Lanette
Hi Lanette,
I would definately get a copy of your x-rays and get a 2nd opinion preferably from a board certified veterinary orthopedic surgeon. I would do this asap. It sounds like you may be correct in that the 2nd fracture could have been avoided. Once you get a 2nd opinion I am glad to also review the x-rays and offer suggestions. A good organic-natural diet along with a supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com, will boost internal immunity and promote healing.
I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you
Dr Carol
Hi Heather,
It sounds like he injured his hind knee, called the stifle joint. He may have stretched or torn a ligament in his knee according to the classic signs he is showing. It is always a good idea to check with your vet. Rest and anti-inflammatories promote healing, and reduce discomfort although this heals very slowly with rest over several months. Weight loss will help him to reduce stress on his joints and help prevent future injuries. PAAWS,available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com, along with my hip & joint support product will help him to heal, boost internal immunity and nourish his joints. PAAWS will also help with weight loss along with feeding him several small daily meals. I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you,

Hi Dr. Carol,
Our lhasa apso/maltese, Peaches, has a suspected fracture above her front right paw from falling forward off a table. She yelped at first for about 30 seconds after it happened but was quiet after that, and favoured the opposite leg. She is currently spending the night at the vet. From your experience, what would we expect the vet to do, and what sort of recovery time could we expect for our little Peaches?
Thank you for your time.
Hi Brendan,
The answer depends on the type of fracture;whether or not it is displaced, if there are broken pieces of bone or if its a simple non-displaced fracture that can heal with a splint and doesn’t need any surgery.
If you can get a copy of the xrays and email them to me I would be glad to review them, answer your questions specifically and offer my suggestions.
I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you,
Dr Carol
Many thanks Dr. Carol.
We get x-rays this morning and will wait for the vet’s verdict, hopefully a good one.
Hi Brendan,
Please keep me posted!
Thank you
Dr Carol
Hi Dr Carol, we picked Peaches up from the local vet this afternoon – she has a 2nd toe fracture and her right leg has a bandage-splint-bandage wrapping. Vet says around 4 weeks and she will be doing a lot better. Back in 10 days to change bandage. Right now she’s tired but doing just fine. Unfortunately no x-rays as we didn’t have time to wait around (they were short-staffed) but all is good, thanks again!
Brendan.
Hi, Dr. Carol. My beloved Angel, a 15 year old Australian Shepherd mix, has a broken & displaced left rear femur, near the femoral head. Angel has a history of idiopathic epilepsy, arthritis, a slight heart murmur, and for the past 2 years “old dog vestibulitis.” She has been taking Rimadyl and KBr (4ml per day) for 6 or so years, and we give her Synovi granules as a supplement. A cat scan is being taken today to get a better idea of what the socket and head look like. The vet specialist has discussed surgery “pins and wires” or putting her down. If we have the surgery, could you give us a realistic description of recouperation and recovery needs?
Hi Laura
I am glad to review the xrays and bloodwork and help you with this decision. This is complicated but with a good surgeon and proper care, if she is doing well internally as her blood work would reflect she could make it through the surgery and be fine. I can address post op needs etc when we talk after I review the xrays.

Hi Dr.Carol,
Our Minnie is a 7 month old 5.5 lb Chorkie…she broke her right ulna and radius last night…we took her to the er vet and after a terrible visit in which the dr tried to force me to sign over my dog to a technician who would love to have her…they made it out like i wouldnt be able to afford to fix her that night and that she would prob need surgery anyways and that i cant afford that so i should give her up…they eventually set her leg and put it into a splint and said it was a clean break…they sent us home with pain meds and a sedative..they gave us very little instructions just stuff like she will adjust to the leg wrap and that she should take it easy…she wont be still i am giving her the meds as prescribed and trying to keep her down..
do i need to keep her crated to keep from having surgery? she is already trying to chase cats, jump on and off furniture she is mostly acting like herself..
do you think she will need surgery eventually or were they just saying that so the technician could have her?
what can i do to help her heal the best without the need for surgery
Hi Brittain,
Keep Minnie confined to a small, quiet room or a crate so she can heal. Since the break is clean and she is young she should heal just fine. She will probably need to rest for 4-8 weeks. Consider a good organic or natural diet and a vitamin supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com to boost intenal immunity and promote healing. I am glad to talk and offer you further help. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Hi Dr Carol, my Domino 10 week Lad/Dalmatian 11kg has just broken her front left leg, the vet says it is the elbow, they are keeping her over the weekend and she will see a specialist on Monday. My question is how will this affect my dog, what rehab should we do, she is very active as I have a 2 year old Male lab who is her father. I am worried she will not be the same again running and jumping. Hope you can reassure me. Kind regards Gary from South Africa
Hi Gary
Domino should heal just fine and due to her young age if the fracture is not displaced she may only need a splint and rest for 6-8 weeks.Your vet will go over home care instructions. Once you have details of the type of fracture and proposed method of treatment I am glad to help you further.
I am available online and toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Hi Dr Carol.
My Japanese akita had a problem with his knees, when he walked his knee caps would have popped out of place. He went through an operation yesterday to put that right but looking at the wound it seems very big, its aprox. 12 inches long. does this sound normal??
many thanks. willie.
Hi Willie,
I am sure the surgeon used good judgement during your dog’s surgery. Although the incision appears to be very big, it should heal normally. Wounds heal from side to side regardless of their length. A larger incision offers the surgeon better visualization of the area so he is able to correct the problem. Carefully monitor your dog as he recovers and if anything looks abnormal notify your vet asap. A good organic diet along with a supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com will boost internal immunity and promote healing. I am glad to talk to you and am available toll fee at 1-866-372-2765.

Hi Dr. Carol,
I have a 6 month old Italian Greyhound that broke his leg 4 weeks ago and now has a pin in his leg. His x-ray showed that he had started to form a bony callous but the fracture has not filled in completely. Would he show that he were in pain if he bent the pin in his leg?
Hi Karen,
Yes if he is in pain, signs will be present. Check his temperature be sure its normal. Normal rectal temperatures are between 100-103 degrees farenheit. His appetite should also be normal and he should be bright and alert. Getting a 2nd opinion is also a valid option.

Hi Dr. Carol:
Glad I found this site.
I have 3 beautiful chihuahua girls aged 13 yrs., 5 yrs. and 6 mos.
About 5 weeks ago the eldest jumped off of the ottoman and yelped (just once). She immediately began favoring her right front leg, but didn’t pull away or scream if I touched her leg or foot.
The next day I took her to our regular vet (whom we trust very much). After x-rays and an exam she determined that Killah had broken the metacarpal of her little finger on her right hand. It was a very clean, diagonal break.
They splinted her entire arm from just below the shoulder.
Every week we have had them change the bandage and the splint. This week (#5) they re-X-rayed the hand and told me that there had not been much healing of the bone.
They said that older small dogs don’t heal bones very well and that she may need to live with this the rest of her life.
I trust my vet, but that’s not the advise I need or want to hear.
Is there anything that can be done to promote bone healing in a 13 year old [very] small dog (she’s a petite 4 lb. darling). She is still flying all over the house and the splint doesn’t seem to bother her. She is still jumping off that ottoman.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks
–Geoffrey
Hi Geoffrey,
The fracture can be pinned, which would require surgery. You could get a 2nd opinion from a board certified orthopedic veterinary surgeon. If you prefer to let her heal with the splint, she needs to rest and not run around the house or jump on and off furniture so the fracture can heal. If you rest her she doesn’t need weekly x-rays. I would wait 3-4 weeks then recheck with an xray. She also would benefit by a good organic diet and a supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com. This will boost her internal immunity and promote healing. I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Hi Dr. Carol. I was talking to you last week about my japanese akitas surgery on his knee. the wound is healing very well but i am struggling to get him to eat. The last two days he hasnt eaten anything, what should I do???
Many Thanks. Willie
Hi Willie
take him back to your vet asap to be sure there is not an infection in the surgery site causing him not to eat
Dr. Carol,
Our dog escaped from our backyard last week and I located her today at a local vet hospital. She had been hit by a car last Friday and has a clean break of the femur. The vet suggests surgery and a pin. The lady who took the dog to the vet is willing to take the dog (and pay for the surgery) which we can not afford. I would like to know if this leg will heal if left alone, giving the dog some use of the limb. The dog is about 18 months to 2 years old. There is still swelling of the leg, and she has gone to her bowl looking for food. I can get the X-ray on a CD. Do we opt for a rest cure or should I let the good Samaritan try to keep the dog contained in her back yard when she lets her out for an evening romp?
Hi Dawn,
The answer to your question depends on the type of fracture and size of your dog. For example, is is a hairline simple fracture or is it displaced. Small young dogs usually heal more quickly than larger dogs. If you email me the xrays on the CD I can review them and give you my opinion of viable options. I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765. My e-mail address for the CD is drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com.

Hi Dr Carol,
Our 8yo basset was struck by a car yesterday and was rushed to the vet and they found she sustained three fractures in her hip. We were told to watch her and see if she urinates. Because she can’t get on her feet we understand it will be difficult. 24hrs later and nothing.
Is there any suggestion to help her? BTW The Dr said there was no indication he could see that her bladder was damaged. But no guarantee.
Hi John,
Xrays of her urinary bladder would reveal whether or not it is intact. She will need to be given fluids either intravenously or subcutaneously so she stays hydrated and can heal. Most hip fractures heal with 6-8 weeks of rest. A good organic diet and a supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com will boost her internal immunity and promote healing and overall wellness. I am glad to talk to you and review the x-rays. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Dr Carol
My 2 year old shnauzer got hit by a truck. I took her to the vet and he said it was a broken pelvis. No surgery required just lots of rest. She has not urinated though…she has had about 1 1/2 cup in the last 24 hours.
Hi Elizabeth
It is important to be sure her bladder was not damaged and is intact. The xrays should indicate that. She needs fluids so she can urinate and you should call your vet and ask him to give her fluids; either intravenous or subcutaneous fluids, which can be given under the skin while you wait, will work. She should get a good organic diet and a supplement like PAAWS would boost her internal immunity, promote recovery and overall wellness.
If you call me I can offer more specific suggestions and am glad to help.

My son’s Great Pyrenees jumped out of a two story window yesterday and fell approximately 15 feet to the ground. The dog was unfamiliar with the house and trying to follow his owner. No one witnessed the fall, so not sure how he landed. He was rushed to the vet and all x-rays and blood work came back normal. The dog was sent home with a muscle relaxer and pain medicine. He drinks and eats fine but refuses to walk. His personality is alert and affectionate. Could he be bruised internally or sore, or could he have something seriously wrong with his spine that an x-ray wouldn’t show? We are very worried. Thanks.
Hi Lil
It sounds like he is not feeling well and is likely to be bruised internally. The blood work may have been taken before true changes were apparent and you may need to have it repeated just to be sure. The x-rays depending on what views were taken may or may not reveal damage. For example they may have taken films of the chest and abdomen but not the spine. I would call your vet and tell him what’s going on and let him take another look at your dog and perhaps a couple more x-rays.
I am glad to talk to you, review blood and xrays and offer my suggestions.
PAAWS, a natural dog vitamin supplement, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com would help him recover, relieve pain and discomfort. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

My dog injured his foot in March. After examining the foot and doing some research I decided it looked like a sprung toe. But I wasn’t sure because he wasn’t limping. I brought him to the vet and his x-rays showed a stress fracture in the same toe but three bones from the tip. When I asked about the sprung toe they told me the fracture was what was making his toe look weird and to keep him off it as much as possible for the next couple weeks as it healed. Since that visit he has not limped but has had 2 incidents which left him limping on the same paw. He usually re-injures the paw when he is playing ball. Sunday was the most recent incident. When I woke up he wouldn’t even walk on the foot that he had played and ran on all day Saturday. This was the most pain he has been in since the original injury so I brought him to a 24hr vet instead of the usual. The x-rays looked the same as before and this vet put a splint on him. His 2 big toes, one of which was the broken one were sticking out the end and he was dragging them on the ground when he walked. The splint was also rubbing just underneath his elbow causing further irritation. I decided the splint was doing more harm then good when I took it off and noticed his paw twitching. I have been rapping it with out the splint but this hasn’t really limited his movements. Is casting it a better option? Or should I let it heal naturally? How would I know if there is a sprung toe in addition to the fracture? What are the best ways to go about treating each of these injuries? How long will they take to heal? Thank you -Nick
Hi Nick
To answer your questions properly I need to know your dogs age and body weight. For this to have been going on for over 3 months is not right. I would suggest you consider getting a 2nd opinion from another vet, preferably a board certified veterinary orthopedic surgeon. Certainly a good organic diet and a natural vitamin-mineral supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com, would boost internal immunity, help relieve pain and promote healing. I am glad to talk to you and review x-rays and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Thank you for the help. He is 65 pound pit bull and just over 2 years old. I have 3 different sets of x-rays. What is the best way to get them to you for review? Do you know of any certified veterinary orthopedic surgeons in Michigan or what the best way to find one is? Thanks – Nick
Hi Nick
I would call the vet school at Michigan State and take your dog there if its not too far or it its too far then ask them for a referral in your area.
For me to review the xrays you need them on a CD so you can email them to me at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com. I charge $35.00 for the review which includes a follow up phone call to you so we can discuss your dog together.

I have a lab mix puppy that is about 4 weeks old. She wiggled out of my arms and fell on my hardwood kitchen floor. Now she is not putting much weight on her front left paw. Nothing seems out of place. And she isnt yelping, shes just sleeping. When I touch the paw she doesnt yelp, but if i stand her up she doesnt put a whole lot of weight on it. My question is do you think it is broken or just sprained?
Hi Brittney
It sounds like its probably not broken. If she is not using it within 24 hours I would check with your vet to be sure.

Hi Dr. Carol. My family is in transit right now. we stopped for the night at a hotel tonight, and my husband took our 2 dogs out for a walk. They were on a double leash and got tangled in the bushes and one of our dogs pulled so hard on the leash when it was wrapped around the little ones leg that it broke her leg. the break is very high but my husband said it’s not her hip. she will not put any weight on it at all. she’s a mixed breed (not sure what) and weighs only about 20-25 lbs… and a year old. she only yelped once when it happened. right now cost is an issue and i don’t know what to do… please help!!!
Hi Carol tonight my family and I found what it looks to be a 12 week old puppy. The puppy has a broken back leg and has greenish pus filled blisters on her stomach which we belive is Impetigo, she eats and drinks fine and uses the bathroom fine. She limps on her leg but uses it sometimes I dont think its broke but I do think its sprained or actually I dont know bc she will let me touch it. We found her in a brier bush stuck and when we recovered her she had tons of ticks… by all the information I do think she has been out there for awhile i am not sure what to do about her leg or her blisters bc I have a dog and I dont want her to catch anything from the stray,
Thankyou so much for your time

Dr. Carol,
Our 22 month old standard poodle broke her ulna and radius when we were in a car accident over Memorial Day weekend. She had surgery and a plate, rod and screws were used to set the bones on May 28th. Yesterday, 5 weeks post op. we took her back since she had not been making the progress we had hoped for. x-rays revealed that she has osteomyelitis at the implant site. She is now taking 500 mg. of Cephalexin 2x/day for the the next 4 weeks and 25 mg. 2x/day of Carprofen. We were told if we didn’t see noticeable improvement in the next 7 days we should bring her back in and we’ll go from there. Now for my question; would Emmy benefit from the use of symphytum and or other herbal remedies you would recommend? Would these remedies interfere w/the meds. she’s currently taking? What dosage would you recommend. Emmy weighs 38 lbs. Any information or guidance you can recommend would be so appreciated. We love our little girl and it breaks my heart to see her go through this. Also, the x-ray showed that she has made very little progress in bone mending. Would the infection be totally responsible for that or could there be hidden problems that we aren’t even aware of?
Thank you for considering my questions,

I have a seven year old lab mix that was hit by a car 6 1/2 years ago. She had a plate and six screws put in her hips, and the vet cut of the ball to her ball socket in her left rear leg because it was cracked in half. Over the last year she has had a really hard time walking on her rear legs, and it seems like the littlest bit of exercise gives her a lot of pain. I think she might be developing arthritis. Do you have any suggestions for pain relief?
Hi Dr Carol,
I’m really grateful I found your website- thanks so much for your helpful tips!
I’m writing from Malaysia. My 18-month-old cross breed female terrier dog,”PB” was hit by a car and broke her leg a week ago. When I first found her after the accident, part of her bone was sticking out from the wound.I immediately brought her to the local vet.The vet was able to push back the protuding bone and stitched up the wound. She also bandanged the wound but due to swelling of her injured paw,the bandages had to be removed the next morning. When PB got home after spending the night at the vet’s, I tried to immobilize her limb by making a splint from 3 pieces of flat bamboo and securing it with surgical tape. PB seemed to be doing ok after that but would still try to move around as she used to be a very active and friendly dog.As the local vet only has basic facilities,I have brought her to see a well-known vet in the city. The x-ray shows that her front right radius and ulna are broken at an angle about an inch from her ‘wrist’.The vet here also conducted some tests and have found that she is otherwise healthy except for her broken leg.PB has always been quite a picky eater but has been eating even less after the accident. The vet told me that surgery was the only way to save her leg by inserting pins to reconnect her broken bones. The estimated high cost of the surgery and follow-up treatment to remove the pins after 8 weeks is a big issue for me.As much as I would like to save my dear PB’s leg and have her back to her own normal self,I do have trouble getting the funds currently. I have been told by the other vet back at my local town that she can have her leg in a cast after her wounds are healed. I am confused and would really appreciate your valuable opinion on the options available under these circumstances. Will my dog’s leg be able to heal completely after surgery to insert the pins? I am afraid of other health complications after the surgery. Also what are the chances of her leg healing if put in a cast over time? What is the estimated duration of the healing process for both methods? Are there any other alternatives to consider? Thank you so much for your help and May God bless you for the excellent work you do.
Warm regards, Yinn, Malaysia.
Hi Lori
I would take the puppy to your vet and am glad to offer my suggestions to help you. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you
Dr Carol
Hi Yinn
Since your dog is young she should heal well.
With the pins most dogs heal in 6-8 weeks. With a cast the healing usually takes about a month longer. Since casting is an option and cost is an issue the cast should be fine for her. I am glad to help further and am available by phone at 440-287-6787 or by email at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com.
Thank you

Hi Cassandra
I would take her to your vet for an xray to see exactly what type of fracture it is and once you have that information I am glad to talk to you and offer my suggestions. Many fractures, especially in small dogs like yours, that are not displaced will heal with a splint and rest. A good organic diet and a vitamin supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com will also promote healing. I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Dear Lori
The impetigo (pussy skin lesions) will heal with antibiotics;keflex or clavamox work well. A bath with organic oatmeal shampoo is soothing and will also help her skin lesions to heal.

Hi Yess,
I am glad to help you and can offer you my suggestions. The best way for me to help you is for you to call me and email me (drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com)your dogs x-rays if you have them on a CD. I need to know the type of fracture and exactly where in the hip it is located. Small, young dogs like yours usually heal well with proper fixation and rest. Dear Dr Carol,
My 11 Month Pom Had A Plaster Cast On His Leg For 9 Weeks Because He Had A Broken Leg. He Finally Has It Off And The Vet Said That It Is Completly Healed , He Will Not Put It Completly Down On The Ground – Only For A Minuite Or So , He Is Also Lying With It Streched Out.
Could You Give Me Some Advice On Aftercare.
Thanks.
Hi Nicole,
Be sure your vet took an xray to document that it is completely healed. If it is healed properly then massage and swimming are very good ways to help his leg get back to normal. Short walks will also help. Your dog should be on a good organic diet and a supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com would boost internal wellness and help him recover and feel better much more quickly. I am glad to talk to you and review the final xray. You could email the x-ray;if its on a CD to me at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

My Pomeranian Ozzie Has Just Had A Plaster Cast Removed From His Leg After 8 Weeks On His Broken Leg. The Vet Said His Leg Has Completley Healed. He Puts His Leg Down On The Ground For Short Periods Of Time And Then Lifts It Up Again. Is This Normal Or Could His Pads Be Hurting Him ?
Hi Nicole
It sounds normal but I would be sure his foot pads are intact and you may want to check with your vet to be sure. Swimming and gentle massage will help to make his leg feel better so he starts to use it again.
A vitamin-mineral supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com will also help to make him feel better quickly. PAAWS will promote overall wellness and reduce his level of pain and discomfort. PAAWS contains Glucosamine and MSM, along with Omega 3 essential fatty acids and 43 other natural nutrients to nourish his bones, joints and body. It will also help to prevent arthritis from developing in the leg that was casted. I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

My chihuahua was run over by my neighbors son on a bike. She has several fractures of her pelvis and a spin fracture. After telling the vet we couldn’t afford the expensive surgery, they said we could take her home and ahe would heal on her own. We are nervous becaues the broken bpnes sound so serious but she is otherwise fine. Do you think its a good idea?
thank you, jami
Hi Jami,
I am glad to help you and offer specific suggestions. Generally dogs in a similar situations will heal with rest nd good nursing care. An organic or home-made diet along with a good natural, balanced vitamin-mineral supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com or http://www.paaws.tv will boost her internal immunity, promote healing and overall wellness and help relieve some of her discomfort. It will take at least 2-3 months for her to heal. If you contact me, I will work with you. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765 or by e-mail at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com.

Dr. Carol,
I have a rat terrier mix who is 8 weeks old. He jumped from me while going down the stairs and landed on his right shoulders. He’s at an emergency clinic now getting x-rays done. They suspect his elbow could be broken. My question is: Is surgery necessary or is there an alternative way to heal his leg/elbow? After the initial fall, he stopped crying or whimpering, but wasn’t really putting pressure on his leg at all. I want him to be well without any big problems in his future but surgery is so expensive. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you!

We have a 8 yr old Great Pyrenees who got hit by a car 7 weeks ago. Our vet put a cast on it the day it happened. We took him in last week to have the cast removed and the vet took xrays and said the callous was not formed well enough, did he mean callous or calcium? Anyway, he re-casted the leg and (it is his right front leg)said another 6 to 8 weeks in this 2nd cast. The vet said it was his age and being a large dog that kept it from healing in the usual time period. Is there any supplement we can give to help him heal? I keep him in the house 24/7 and only let him out to relieve himself. Thank you!
I love your website and all your answers!
Hi Barb,
The “callous” your vet referred to means that the bones had not yet healed. I can help you and am glad to work with you. PAAWS is a wonderful natural supplement that will promote healing, help reduce pain and discomfort and boost internal immunity and overall wellness. PAAWS is available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com. Consider a good organic diet as well. I also carry calcium supplements and many more items here in my hospital that are not on my site yet. I am glad to talk to you and can review the xrays also. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765 or by email at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com.
Thank you
Dr Carol
Hi Barb,
PAAWS is terrific long term natural solution and will help your dogs a great deal. Arthritis is likely a problem your dogs are battling, which is why your vet gave you the Rimadyl. Rimadyl helps many dogs but it also kills others with no warning. In fact I lost 2 patients on Rimadyl and no longer use it at all. 60 minutes also ran a special national television program on it.
I offer various discount offers on PAAWS, you might want to consider since your dogs are very large.
For example I can offer you a 4 month supply for a large dog at $199.00 which includes shipping.
I work with many dogs in similar health situations quite successfully and we have been able to reduce
and in many cases eliminate the Rimadyl.
Please feel free to call me and we can talk

Dr Carol,
I wrote a comment on the dogs broken bones article on your blog yesterday about my dog Mickey (8 week old rat terrier mix). He’s back at home and after the vet looked at the x-ray said he couldn’t find any breaks or fracture, which I was happy to hear )
He did say that there could have been something on the growth plates that he couldn’t see on the x-ray and that his fall could almost stop the growth plate from growing or something to that effect. How likely is it for a pet to damage the growth plate? I know that Mickey being only 8 weeks old makes him really young and any damage could be permanent when he is older. The vet said that his limb could be growing in a wrong angle or be shorter or something. I hope its okay though.
Right now, though, he is walking on his left leg more (favoring it only a little). It’s hard to confine him to a cage. When he’s supervised, he just chews on his toys. We are trying to limit any physical exertion.
Thank you for your quick response! Your blog is great! Thank you!
Tina
Dr. Carol,
I have a 2 and a half month old wired hair fox terrier with a broken femur. She seems to be walking fine, although she does favor the healthy leg. She is eating and drinking normally, the only thing different is that she sleeps a lot more than usually and is not quite as active as she normally is. The break is at the growth plates and the vet gave us three options: to put her down, use pins to refuse the bones, or to shave off the top of the femur. She seems to be doing okay, and will sometimes use the broken leg. My family is leaning towards just letting her heal, but the vet wants to shave off the top of the top of the femur. What is our best option? Will she be able to recover naturally? Will the surgery leave her with a useless leg? Please help.
Thanks,
Melissa
Hi Melissa
If cost is an issue, your dog will heal in 2-3 months with rest, a good diet and proper supplements to promote healing like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com or http://www.paaws.tv.
She will develop arthritis in time which can be handeled.
If cost is not an issue, I would get a 2nd opinion from a board certified orthopedic veterinary surgeon and then make your decision.
I am glad to review the x-rays and give you specific recommendations accordingly.

This afternoon our 4 month old beagle fell off our bed backwards. Now her back paw is swollen, she’s resting a lot, and she won’t put weight on it. At first we couldn’t get near it without her crying, now (about 4 hrs later) we can touch it and even spread her toes without her crying. We really cannot afford to take her to the vet right now, but we are concerned if it could be serious. What do you suggest we do?
Hi Kirsten
I would let her rest for a day and if she is still tender after 24-48 hours I would take her to your vet to be sure.

Our sons puppy is 11 weeks old and jumped out of his truck. He broke his right rear ferum. The vet said he would need surgery with pins, but the cost is 3000 dollars. Our son cannot afford that, will the bone heal on its own in time?
Hi Patty
Yes the fracture, if not displaced and properly splinted, should heal with rest in about 2 months. Consider a good organic diet and a natural vitamin supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com to promote healing, help relieve pain and discomfort and boost internal immunity. I am glad to review the xrays and can talk with you. I am available toll fee at 1-866-372-2765.

I am with a pet rescue and we have a 12 week old hound pup that has suffered a broken femur. This break does not affect any growth plates, my vet placed two pins in her leg and ordered her to be confined to a small cat crate for four weeks and only allowed out on a leash to eat and use the restroom. Of course we hold her as much as possible but I was wondering if a wheelchair would be feasible for the pup during her recovery? Would one of these devices typically be available in time to be practical?
Hi James
No I wouldn’t use a wheelchair or anything like that. I would rest her but it should be ok to take her out for short walks on a leash until she is healed. A good organic diet and a natural vitamin supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com or http://www.paaws.tv would boost internal immunity and promote healing.

I have a 3&1/2 month Pomeranian that broke all it’s metacarpals in his front left paw. I took him to the emergency vet and they took x-rays to confirm this and but a U shaped kind of cast with rap on the leg. The Vet told me to have it re-wrapped every 7 to 10 days and don’t let it get wet. If it gets wet the cast would need to be re-wrapped within 24 hrs..
Okay, I’ve been following his advise to the “T”. I’ve taken our Pom to the family vet every 7 to 19 days and having it re-wrapped. The last time I brought our Pom for a re-wrap I had to leave him there since the Vet had an emergency surgery that couldn’t wait. I went to pick up our Pom much later in the day when I was told he was ready. Everything seemed in order and his cast looked re-wrapped. They didn’t even make me pay for this visit which I thought was really pleasant. I assumed it was due to the innconvenience factor of the situation.
Well, the cast has been on for almost 5 weeks and it got a little wet yesterday morning so I decided to take off the wrapping today myself and asses the situation. It actually looked as if the under-bandgages had never been redone! It looked AWFUL underneath as far as the cleanliness goes…. I know this in NOT from the little bit of dampness that our Pom came into contact with yesterday. There is NO way!
Anywho, Chowder our Pom seems to be licking the heck out of his newly un-bandaged paw and is a little cautious on it. He doesn’t seem in pain when using it and I would love to bring him to his present Vet except for the situation I explained above is really bothering me.
What do you reccomend?
Caroline
Hi Caroline,
I enjoyed talking to you and as we discussed clean and dry his leg, then re-wrap it so it is stable and he stops licking his paw. Either go back to your vet or choose a new vet. Get an x-ray of his paw which will verify whether or not the fracture is healed. Once you have this information, please let me know the results and we can go from there. I am glad to review the x-rays as well, if you get them on a CD. I am available by e-mail at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com or by phone toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Hi Dr. Carol,
I have a 5 yr. old Pug, Farley, who fell out of a moving car (15mph) in our neighborhood and fx. his left rear femur. It was a Friday evening, he went to the ER Vet and x-ray taken revealed a mid-femur FX and a small splintering of the bone. So, bone broke in two and then, small piece splintered off at the break site. The ER splinted him, gave him the patch and rimadyl (sp?). The following day – Saturday a.m. – he went to his regular vet, who reviewed the xrays / resplinted and scheduled Farley for surgery on Monday.
Surgery took place – a pin through the femur to secure it and a few wires wrapped around the splinted bone section. This was 3 weeks ago tomorrow.
Recovery – week 1… good, he slept often and began to put pressure on the leg, slightly. Week 2 – he stopped using the leg, swelling completely gone, he was basically back to normally. We say Vet in week 2 concerned about why he stopped putting pressure and concerned there was more wrong with him than just the FX, my concern was nerve damage, muscle damage?? Vet says his movement and muscle seemed fine, but perhaps slow recovery. Week 3 – this past week – still not using his leg, no weight – just hangs, we have continued with rimadyl (but lowering dosage – and, this is giving him the shakes?). Yesterday, went back to the Vet again with my concerns and wanting another xray. The Vet thought Farley’s knee was losing mobility – and, then the xray revealed that it appears the pin shifted down and is now hitting his knee joint/ligaments etc?? So, we are back to surgery tomorrow morning to have surgery to pull the pin back up.
Sorry, so long winded but I wanted to give you history. My concern is – do you think this pin movement could prevent him from recovery? How can we tell if there is nerve damage – week 1 he was using it – but, then stopped – would he have nerve damage if he could have used it. How do I know if there will be further damage? And, finally what is your opinion of physical therapy? I appreciate any feedback.
Thank you.
Kathy, Farley’s Mom
Hi Kathy,
It sounds like the pin slid down in to his stifle, which is why he stopped using his leg and why he went down hill. I doubt there is nerve damage but you will know for sure once he is healed. Physical therapy is wonderful!
An organic or homemade diet and a natural vitamin supplement like PAAWS, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com or http://www.paaws.tv will promote recovery, boost internal immunity and help relieve discomfort. I am glad to talk to you and review x-rays and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Dr Carol
Thank you Dr. Carol. Farley had his surgery this morning and will hopefully be on the road to recovery very soon. I am going to order the supplement to assist in his recovery. We have a follow up shortly with the Vet to confirm this is in fact what had happened.
Hi Kallan
I am glad Farley’s surgery is over. Please keep me posted on his recovery.
Thank you

Hi Dr. Carol,
I have a Border Collie named Shamrock, and he’s about 2 years old. He broke his leg about 7 or so weeks ago in the center of his leg between the paw and the elbow. The break was actually 2 breaks in a criss-cross fashion(like an X). He had multiple casts for the next 6-7 weeks, and the Vet. kept telling us it was doing better every time he got a new cast. This week they told us it was time to take the cast off for the last time, but when they did xrays it showed the break had actually gotten worse. He was allowed limited exercise which included pretty much just hobbling around the house. He was not allowed to play or get roudy or even go outside other than the bathroom. The Vet. is now telling us he needs to have surgery to put plates in his leg and he needs to be caged for 6-8 weeks after that with a muzzle and sedetives given everyday so he’s too groggy to get excited and move around. They were very rude and said that it was my fault this all happened even though I limited him to walking around the house. If they had told me to keep him in a cage while his other casts were on, I would have done so to speed up the healing. They just said limited exercise. They also told me if the plates don’t work out they are going to have to cut his leg off. This would be devastating for my wife. Is the surgery to put plates in his leg our only option? Or should I try the casts/splints again and keep him in a cage? I would appreciate any advice on what to do. I may be able to get his xrays on CD and send them via email.
Thank you!
Eric
Hi Eric,
I would consider taking your dog and the x-rays to a board certified veterinary orthopedic surgeon. Your dog will heal and be fine but it doesn’t sound like the vet you have been working with is helping you properly. There are several options to repair this. If the bones are not displaced which I have to assume or your vet would not have put a cast on in the 1st place, external fixation with pins should work nicely to repair this and the cost is much, much less than bone plates. I am glad to review the x-rays if you can get them on a CD and we can talk further. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thankyou
Dr Carol
Morning Dr. Carol, I wish I could be writing for the soul purpose of telling you how great your smile is… Though today I am not.
On Wed. evening our 2 1/2 year old Cardigan Welsh Corgi was struck by a vehicle. I witnessed the entire thing and am doing my best not to place blame on anyone including my self. That’s why they call them accidents right??? Anyway………..
Where we’re at right now is here:
His head has been cleared of any long term damage, his front teeth between his K9s will need to be removed, his lungs are healing (he had many contusions on his right lung) and they are going to be doing more X-rays on Thursday of his hind quarters which is where the issue now lays.
I am at a complete loss. He is unable to bear any weight on his rear right leg. Seems to be his hip, fracture maybe? The comment the Vet said when we were leaving today was that we should look for a co-signer for credit. That has left me quite worried. In the past week we have used our mortgage payment and car payment to get him this far. We’re not giving up but if his hip is fractured is surgery the only option???? It’s obvious we will do anything for our 3rd child. (Pippin) I am just getting really concerned about where his health is going and what we will need to do and what our options are. Maybe it’s just to early to tell. I don’t know. I’m holding onto the end of the rope the best I can……
Just at a loss….
Dear Tab
I am sorry about all this but can help you and am glad to work with you. You need to get xrays of his pelvis to determind whether or not there is a fracture. Since Pippin is young and a small-he should heal up and enjoy a normal life. I can review the xrays if you can email them to me on a CD. I can also review the blood work and discuss your options with you. I am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765. Please give me a call.

Dr. Carol,
About 1 week ago my 2 YAO Border Collie broken her femer, 1 inch procimal from her left rear knee. I took her to a vet that was not our usual vet. X-rays and medications were soon to follow. After pain managment was taken care of we reviewed the x-rays. The femer had no fishers or fragments. It was a clean break. The Vet infromed me that there was three options. 1. put her down. 2. internal pin, and 3. a external rod assembly. Sad to say cost was a big fator and we went for the most cost eficiant surgery, #2. Which is about $2,000 and will go up with follow up visits. When picked up my dog 2 days after the surgery she had 2 insision marks and 2 pins that went through the femer and stuck out of her skin just above the hip. So when she moves the limb the pins move with the femer. It seemed odd to he the pins sticking out side of the body. I was also told that a bone graph was taken from her hip. Now that my dog is home and we were instructed to try and get her to use the leg. Which she will not, except to rest it on the ground from holding it up while moving. Now one week after the sergury the pins seemed to have shorten and they no can go under the skin to cause great discomfort. Also, while laying on her side and putting the injuryed leg up to stretch a small amount of crepitus was present. I called the vet and he stated that the tissue around the the pin site must be swollen and taht it will be ok. Also the sound i was hearing was subcutanouse emphosima. He also stated that the bone was “solid” and would no be able to move. My question to you is, should I play the wait and see game, or would it be prudent to go to another vet for a second opionion?
Thank you,
Douglas
Hi Doug
I would definately get a 2nd opinion from another vet. You might consider a 2nd opinion from a board certified veterinary orthopedic surgeon.
I am glad to review xrays and talk to you.

How much dose it cost to fix a broken femur bone?
-kali
Hi Kali
The price will vary depending on the way the fracture is fixed. I am glad to talk to you and discuss this. The type of repair depends on the age and size of your dog as well as the type of fracture so there can be several options such as a cast, a splint, pins and wires, or the most costly method which are bone plates. So the cost could range from $100.00 to $3000.00 or more. You may have been quoted a high price but that isn’t necessarily your only option. If you have a copy of the xrays on a CD-you can email them to me and I can offer you specific advise. I am available to talk toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Dr Carol,
I have a 10 month old Maltese puppy, Ruby. She weights 3.5lbs. On wednesday she went outside with no problems and came back in the house favoring her back right leg. I took her to the vet and got x-rays done. They told me she fractured her Femoral head, and will need surgery. I am a full time college student and i don’t have any money for this surgery! Is there anyway that with alot of rest that my puppy could heal. She is like my baby and i don’t want to put her down because of this. Please let me know asap! I am willing to use my college money for her surgery but if it isn’t a must i won’t. Please give me as much information as possible. Is there anyway she will be ok without surgery?
Thank you
Brittany
Hi Brittany
A young small dog like Ruby will heal with or without surgery. Consider rest for 4-6 weeks, a good organic diet and a natural vitamin supplement like PAAWS, available at https://www.chagrinfallspetclinic.com. PAAWS will boost internal immunity, speed up healing and help relieve pain and discomfort. If you can get a copy of the x-rays on a CD and email them to me, I can review them and offer more specific suggestions. Part of the decision depends on the nature of the fracture;for example if it is displaced, has any bone fragments associated with it or if it’s just a non displaced hairline fracture.

Good morning Dr. Carol,
My 5 yr. old, 150 lb. Newfoundland dog injured his front left paw yesterday. I let him and my female newf out in the morning to potty and she crashed into him, knocking him to the ground. He yelped in pain, and continued crying until I reached him. I think he sprained his paw, so after icing it, called the vet who suggested waiting for 24 hr.s to see if it improved. He ate normally yesterday and today, drinking normally, but still won’t put weight on the front paw. No swelling, I can touch and massage it everywhere, I can’t feel any breaks in the toes. I’m trying to keep him resting (not too hard for a newf), but I don’t know what is normal for a sprain, and if I should go ahead and get it x-rayed. I checked his shoulder and elbow as well, can’t see or feel anything abnormal there. Are there muscles or ligaments he could have torn? How long for a sprain to show improvement? He slept on his left side, so I don’t think he’s bruised, but I’m worried his off-gait will lead to further problems.
Hi Auriga,
I doubt anything serious occured based on your description but if your dog isn’t putting weight on the paw within 48 hours I would check with your vet just to be sure.
I am glad to talk to you and am available toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
I carry a natural vitamin supplement called PAAWS, which would be wonderful for your dog, that you might take a look at.
Thank you

Good morning Dr. Carol
Last night (about 4 hours ago) my 85lb American Bully, who is 11 months old jumped out of the bed of my truck. I was going about 30mph and she hit the grass and tumbled several times. She got up on her own jogged back to the truck, she is now favoring her rear leg wont put any weight on it, she is eating drinking and urinating just fine. I called my vet this morning and he informed me that I had to pay what ever the cost of what he does as soon as the service is performed. She doesnt yelp or anything when i touch it, just whines when she gets up and down. Since im on fixed income is there anything that I can do to heal this on my own or to help it heal ?
Also Dr Carol I have some cephalexin from a previous vet visit would that help in anyway?
Hi Bgkykingpin
It sounds like your dog may have injured a ligament in her hind knee-also called the stifle joint. This causes no pain but they can’t put their hind leg down. This is very common and requires rest and anti-inflammatories. It is always best to check with your vet. I am glad to talk to you and can help you.
Take a look at a product called PAAWS-it is a natural vitamin-mineral supplement that will speed up healing time, help relieve pain and discomfort and boost internal immunity.
These injuries take several months to heal and I do not recommend surgical repair.
Thank you
Dr Carol
Hi Bgkykingpin,
I do not recommend using the cephalexin at this time
Dr Carol
Dear Dr Carol,
Thanks for your prompt reply, i just returned from the vet and 175$ and 3 xrays later we figured out that she has a small crack where her hind leg connects to her pelvis. The vet said that the joint looked ok and there wasnt anything to do about the pelvis but let it heal, i am planning on buying the paaws next payday. The question that i have for you now is, is it ok to give her glucosamine tablets that i have that i used to take. It is 2000mg and is glucosamine hydrochloride, she is 97 lbs and is 11months old
Hi Bgkykingpin,
I am glad you went to your vet!! The tablets you have sound fine. You might break them in half and give 1/2 in morning and 1/2 at night. Please keep me posted
Thank you
Dr Carol
Hi my name is brianna im 12 I have 3 dogs, gladyse is a schnauzer/lasso opso mix shes 13, Darold Dean is my dumb 1 year old 120 lbs lab and the one im worried about is my 3 year old 24 lbs mini schnauzer named grrrty, She started limping yesterday and wouldnt eat. today she wont put any weight whatsoever on her back left leg. she hasnt eaten or drank and keeps yowling like a cat in heat. earlier today i went to brush her out and she bit me turning my hand blue and leaving two welts. Hi Brianna,
I am sorry to hear about your dog and understand your financial concerns.
You do however, need to take your dog to the vet for x-rays and a diagnosis.
If I can help after that please call my veterinary office toll free at 866-372-2765.
Be sure to take care of your hand as well to prevent infection from being bitten.

Hi Dr. Carol,
I have a question concerning the plates put in my dogs (terrier/chihuahua mix) front legs after a fall. after the casts were removed he got a cyst/bump (about 10mm in size) right above where the plate was put in. it broke open, healed but came back about 3-4 times. and then he got another one next to it /on the side but close to original one. 5-6 months later this one wont go away…at best it is 7-8mm but still open/raw and at its worst it is 15mm across and yellow, bleeding and very raw looking. the area where his plate was put in looks to be lifting/swelling in an rectangular 1 inch by 1/2 inch shape on his front leg. lastly, there was an inch long crease/indentation next to the plate which i thought was the incision but it is now about 3-4 inches long running the length of his leg…
every time i take him to the vet, i get a $700 x-ray and get told he is fine…if i want the plate removed i can but it isnt necessary. i dont want to put my dog though surgery again but in same light, i simply dont understand how this is acceptable or normal after a year. he has antibiotic but it isnt getting better. do i remove them? do i leave them? is this normal?
please help and HUGE thanks for any advice you can give.
Hi Jules
No this is not normal or correct at all but I may have a simple solution for you.
I would ask your vet to biopsy the cyst(bump) so you can find out exactly what it is which will enable
you and your vet to know the best way to finally remove it.
Removing the cyst or appropriately treating it should not interfere with the bone plates and will allow
you and your vet to just focus on the bump.
Generally plates are not removed unless absolutely necessary so in your case leaving them alone sounds fine.
I would be glad to help further after you get a diagnosis on the bump so please feel free to contact our
veterinary office toll free at 1-866-372-2765.

Hi Dr Carol,
My name is Jason and my puppies name is Smalls he is 8 month year old puppy. He was attacked by a pit bull and had surgery for a broken left humerus. He has 1 im pin, after the surgery. He had the surgery two weeks ago. My question is I can see and feel the pin under his skin. Is that normal, should the end of the pin be that visible under the skin? He doesn’t seem be any pain or uncomfortable but it’s just kinda creepy, and I would want the pin to puncture through his skin. And another question do you think he’ll have a limp a year from now or will he be back to his run the whole yard with a carefree puppy attitude? Also he is need of a haircut when should we get that done after he gets that pin out? Thanks for your help?
Hi Jason,
I am sorry to hear about your dog. The pin in general, should not normally be that visible under your dogs skin and it should never poke through the skin.
I would check with your veterinarian just to be sure. Your dog should be able to run, jump and play just as he did prior to the surgery within a few months after healing is complete.
Whether the pin should stay in or be removed is a question to ask your veterinarian. In many cases pins are removed, in other cases they remain in the bone.
I would be sure your dog has healed and wait until about a month after healing is complete to see a groomer.
If you’d like us to review x-rays and/or discuss in further detail please feel free to call my veterinary office toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
Thank you
Dr Carol
That’s I wouldn’t want the pin to poke through, typo.
That is correct
Dr Carol
Hi Dr.Carol 😀
I was in awe reading through this page that you had taken the time to respond to everyone that posted a question. AMAZING!!
My question for you is this…
Our 15 wk old Siberian Husky was struck by a vehicle Sunday night. It has been determined that her internals are fine, but xrays have shown that her pelvis is shattered (broken in 2-3 places). The cost to repair her is exponential…and the surgeon suggested that she very well “might just heal on her own”. He suggested a plate (maybe pins..etc) but stated that she may need further surgery down the road for the ball and socket. I want our pup (Kyah) to heal and have the best possible life…just want to make sure that coming up with the large sum of money required is necessary, and that we’re not starting the ball rolling on multiple surgeries. I don’t want Kyah to suffer. He suggested euthanizing her if cost was an issue (seems like a harsh alternative!! :-P) Her quality of life is my #1 priority. What is your experience in this type of situation and what would you suggest as the best route to take.
Thank you so much in advance for your time…Erika
Hi Erika
Broken pelvises heal quite well especially in a small, young 8 week old dog. 10-12 weeks of rest along with good nursing care, a natural diet and proper natural vitamin supplements such as Paaws and the Hip & Joint Supplement to boost immunity and speed healing work very well for most dogs like yours.
In most cases, regardless of the method of fixation used, arthritis will be a factor as your dog grows up which with proper supplements is easy enough to handle.
I would steer you away from costly fixation methods and bone plates as your dog is so young that this may lead to to needing multiple surgeries with a worse potential outcome.
I hope this information is somewhat helpful.
If you’d like me to review x-rays and discuss this further please contact my veterinary office directly

Hi dr. Carol,
Im in desperate situation. My dog 2 year Lhasa Apso got bit by a pit bull 24 hrs ago. Long story short, she has 3 out of 4 broken lower bone (right front leg). My dr said the 2 broken bones can be fixed but the other one is shattered. She recommends amputating it due to several reasons including circulation, infection, price, easiness to take care of, etc. i couldnt make decision today but i have to make one tomorrow (sept 26) before noon on what kind of surgery i want. Choices are : pinning the two bones, OR casting/splint OR amputate.
I can send you the xray if you need.
Thank you
Sincerely,
Desperate moma~
Dear Kristania,
I am sorry to hear about your dog and glad to help.
If you can email me the xrays I can offer specific suggestions
regardless of the method used to fix the fractures they will heal and in time arthritis will develop but you can easily deal with that as needed
Please do NOT amputate your dogs leg. he is small and young and will heal whether a cast/splint and/or pins are used
You will need to provide good nursing care, a healthy diet and possibly natural supplements like Paaws Dog Vitamins and the Hip & Joint to boost internal immunity and speed healing

Hi Dr. Carol,
Our dog McFly ran out onto the street and was hit by a car. He has a shattered femur, and the vet recommended that we have his leg amputated. He is 2 years old and very energetic and we would rather try to save his leg rather than have it cut off but we are worried that getting the surgery would still lead to amputation.
We would love a 2nd opinion from a professional before we make any drastic decisions and would love to hear what you would recommend.
We could email you the xrays if you need them
Thank you so much for any help you could provide us!
Dear Veronique,
I am sorry to hear about your dog McFly and glad to help you. Please feel free to email the x-rays to me at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com.
Call our veterinary office toll free at 866-372-2765 so we can discuss. Please do NOT let anyone amputate your dogs leg.
Fractures do heal and your dog is young at age 2 which is in his favor. Post op issues such as arthritis can be dealt with quite easily.
Perhaps an Intra-Medullary Pin with wires would work for fixation and stabilization of the shattered femur. Then rest along
with a good natural diet and proper supplements like Paaws Dog Vitamins and the Hip & Joint should help to speed healing which should take 8-12 weeks.
Thank you
Dr Carol
hi, dr carol. my 9 mo. old puppy was hit by a car last night. we took her to the ER vet and she was x-rayed and found to have a fractured pelvis. they also did an ultrasound to check for bleeding in the bladder and found nothing much. she has been resting and i will take her to see a vet specialized in orthopedics tomorrow. my question is this: she has not urinated since last night before the accident, and the doctor told me her bladder was nice and full for the ultrasound this morning, that she might have pinkish urine, but not to worry unless it darkened. now i’m worried because i haven’t seen any urine at all! she has eaten a little bit and drunk some water, and she is more alert, so i don’t want to rush back into the vet ER in the middle of the night (we’re in france, btw). is this lack of urination serious enough that i should take her back in, or can we wait out the night?
Hello
I am sorry to hear about your dog and glad to help.
I would call the ER and report exactly to them how she is doing and the fact that she hasn’t urinated and they will answer your question.
It sounds to me by your description that she will be fine and there is likely no need to go back to the ER tonight.

Hello Dr.Carol,
I want to thank you first for such a wonderful blog where you take time and effort to respond to people’s concern. I have a 15 month old Ridgeback pup and yesterday when I drove In my house yard, I hit her by car by mistake. I feel very very guilty. She has a broken hip where the hip bone is snapped from the socket and separate. That is what I see in X ray report and my husband has sent you the X-rays for you to look at in your email. She was given first aid to manage the shock at the vet and now We are giving pain killer once a day. She can stand on her 3 legs but the hind leg hip bone is snapped so she is not putting pressure on that leg. I feel very sorry for her. I just wish things get normal with her and she is normal. Please advice after looking at the X-ray . May God bless you. The society needs people like you. Thank you.
Hi Dr.Carol,
The age of my pup iis 15 weeks not 15 months Ridgeback. Sorry for the mistake in the previous comment.
Hello,
I am sorry to hear about your dog’s broken bones and glad to help.
The fact that your dog is very young is in her favor as far as fractures and healing time.
I am glad to review the x-rays if you get them on a C/D and email them to me at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com
We can also discuss this by phone.

My 11 month old yorkie jumped from the arm of a couch and hit the tile floor. I immed brought her to the vet who said she had quite a break of the bone above that connects to her foot joint (not at the joint but a little higher) they casted it almost five weeks ago and figured six weeks should do it. I had it rexrayed at a little less than five weeks and It did not get any better. I think it looks like they set it wrong. She is not in any pain and they suggested letting her live as it is, amputation or seeing a orthopedic specialist. I wish I had done that five weeks ago. I am bringing her to the specialist on saturday. Will waiting even though she was in a cast hurt her chances? I do NOT want her leg amputated. I almost fainted when she suggested it.What can I do?
Dear Kimp5,
I am glad to review the xrays if you email them to me and we can discuss treatment options.
Because your dog is young and doesn’t weigh much healing is in your favor.
Please do not amputate the leg this is not necessary at all.
You might look at Paaws pet vitamins and the Natural hip & joint supplement available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com as they boost healing, reduce pain and discomfort and boost internal immunity

I have a 2 year old Male Morkie. On November 22,2012, we both took a tumble down some stairs. His front left paw has 4 breaks in it. I took him to the emergency vet and they tried to reset it as best as they could, but they said they couldn’t get the bones completely back together. They told me that he would have issues with that leg for the rest of his life and to see our regular vet. So we have been seeing our regular vet every 2-3 weeks since then and they just put a new soft splint on it every time and we have had 2 sets of X-rays taken so far. Now it is February, and he is still not healed. Today he somehow got his splint off and hurt his paw again. This time he cries when it is touched. I can’t afford an expensive surgery. I have already paid more than $1200 in vet bills. Is there something I can do to help him heal? Keep him out of pain. I also feel like our vet isn’t doing the best job. No one in my area will do payment plans for surgery. I feel like my vet is just draining me out of money, with no results. I don’t know what to do. Please give me some advice.
Hi Rachee,
I am sorry to hear this and glad to help you

Hi Dr. Carol,
I rescued a minpin, approximately 1 1/2-2 yrs old, last October who had been hit by a car and ended up with a broken femur. He had 4 pins in his leg for about 8 weeks. Once the pins were removed and he returned home, he slipped and fell on the kitchen floor and rebroke his leg. The vet used a rod and couple pins to secure the fracture the 2nd time. Now, after 8 more weeks the rod and pins have been removed. I just took him back for a recheck after 2 weeks of having the pins removed and it looks like the vet feels the leg needs to be removed. My dog has not used his leg since the initial fracture, refusing to bear weight on it. How do I know if amputation is right for my dog? Are there certain questions I should ask the vet? I feel like he deserves to be given more time. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hi Madreena
I am so very sorry about this.
Please do NOT let them amputate your dogs leg as it will heal with proper care.

Also, he was doing toe touches when the pins came out the first time so it looked promising that he would be able to eventually use his leg. This time, he has not done any toe touches and has sustained a lot of atrophy. Thank you for any recommendations you can provide.
I have a 14 week old chihuahua. She was playing and got her leash wrapped around her left hind ankle foot area and then tried to take off running. She yelped then limped a little. When I move her foot back and forth there is a clicking sound. She seems to be in no pain and doesn’t mind if I touch it. Should I keep an eye on her and see how she does? Thank you in advance
Hi Robin,
It sounds like your dog pulled a ligament in her hind leg knee which vets call the stifle joint.
This is the most common musculo-skeletal injury in dogs. As the ACL ligament stretches and/or tears
it often produces a classic “clicking” sound.
We have had great results using 2 natural supplements: Paaws Pet Vitamins along with Hip & Joint , both available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com as this is a recurring injury.
Please check with your vet 1st and feel free to call our veterinary office as I am glad to discuss.

Hi Dr. Carol,
I just wante to thank youfor taking the time to speak with me on the phone. Your followup was really quick. You were 100% right, she never should have been casted with that kind of break. Although the surgeon wouldnt directly throw the other vet under the bus (they get referrals, I understand) he pretty much agreed without saying anything. She is three weeks past today after pin and plate surgery in her front leg and doing great. she is putting weight on it with no problem. The surgeon said if she continues like this she should make a full recovery with the main bone. Its hard keeping her quiet but we are trying. Thank you so much for talking with me. As you know my orginal vet wanted me to amputate after the cast failed to work. Im so glad I contacted you! Our family and our dog thank you!
Hi Kimp5,
I am delighted your dog is doing well!
Congrats on a job well done.
Please keep me posted and keep up your excellent work.

Hi Dr Carol-
I have a 2 yr old chihuahua Gia. When she was 5-6 months old she broke her tight leg jumping from my husbands arms and it cost 3000+ in surgery/casts. Yesterday she pushed from my husbands arms when getting out of his Jeep. He says she wasn’t too far from the ground when she jumped. She is now limping and won’t applied pressure to the same leg that now has plates, pins & screws. It’s not tender to the touch as when she broke it she cried and cried and cried & would not let us touch it. When moving her paw up and down it crackles a bit. I have ice on it and she doesn’t cry when I apply pressure to it. My husband doesn’t want to spend 3000 on another surgery but I want to make sure she is ok-she is my little girl. Should I take her to the vet for X-rays? I don’t know if waiting will hurt her in the long run. She slightly is applying pressure today. What do you think?? I need some advise please!
Thank you so much!!!
Hi Nikki,
I am sorry to hear about Gia and glad to help.
Yes please take your dog back to the vet and get x-rays of her leg, ASAP. Be sure the vet performs a complete physical exam along with a rectal temperature to rule out any infection. If you get a copy of the x-rays on a CD and can e-mail me a copy [drcaroldvm@gmail.com] I can review and help you specifically as far as what needs to be done to correct this issue. I will also make recommendations for you as far as financial obligations between you and your vet concerning this matter.
I hope this information is somewhat helpful.

Thank you so much! Do you think waiting until tomorrow morning would hurt? I really don’t trust many other vets as I do my own. She was not the one that performed the surgery on her before when she 5 months. When she broke her leg we fully knew it was an emergency, but she seems to be fine just not putting pressure on it. I have been babying her all day & icing it.
Thank you for your prompt response.
She is applying a little pressure just not much
And after I typed this she starts to apply more pressure but still holds it up some!
Hi Nikki
Waiting an extra day at this point should be fine.

I have a 4 month old French Bulldog and last week she jumped off of the chair, injuring her leg. She has not been whimpering, crying, or acting any different, other than not putting any weight on the back leg. I had taken her to the vet the morning after this happened, but due to machine failure, she couldn’t ex ray her leg. She did do a complete exam, rotating the leg, extending the leg, etc., Lexi still showed no reaction to what she was doing, so she said it was probably a sprain. After a week of not putting weight on it, I took her back, the ex ray was done and the growth plate was broken. She has a soft cast on her leg for 6 weeks and then we go from there. She doesn’t want to do surgery because of her age and the possibility of it healing on it’s own. What kind of long term prognosis should I expect?
Hi Lovesamoran,
I am sorry to hear about your dog’s broken leg and glad to help.
I would be sure to get an xray at 4 weeks to monitor whether or not the fracture is healing.
If it appears to be healing then that should be fine but if it is not progressing properly
you may have to take additional measures for which I would be glad to help you.
Healing will speed up with proper diet and nursing care. Considering natural supplements like Hip & Joint as they have helped many dogs similar to Lexi heal.
Fractura healing usually is complete in 8-12 weeks. Arthritis will be a factor to deal with as Lexi grows but we have several wonderful natural pet supplements to help with canine arthritis
I am glad to review xrays and also glad to discuss. Please feel free to call our veterinary office at any time

Hi Dr. Carol,
Our dog had her 6 week check up for her fractured bones. The surgeon was really happy to see bone growth in the radius. He said it was just where he expected it due to the fact we waited 5 weeks for surgery because of the first vets toal mistake of casting her leg. He told me to let her walk around on it a little but give it two more weeks before we start the rehab process. The most unexpected news that astounded him was the ulna. He said that it wouldn heal and most likly just absorb. He was shocked that it fused back together and actually almost healed! She wants to jump around now as she feels fine. Its very hard to restrain her. He said no more jumping on off furniture for good. How do you keep a yorkie from not wanting to Jump???lol
thanks again for everything..(im walking her into the vets office in a week that told me to amputate…to get her records for our new vet)
Hi Kimp5,
I am delighted to hear your dogs good news!!
Congrats for making the correct decision and not letting the other vet amputate your dogs leg.
To keep your Yorkie from jumping on the furniture while she is healing consider keeping her in a small room
like a bathroom or even a small portable playpen might work.
Please keep me posted on her progress and feel free to call at any time
Happy Holidays
Thank you for the update

My 3 year old female pit bull broke her right front leg 2 nights ago. She ran into a sharp metal corner that cut her all the way to the bone and actually ended up breaking both bones in her leg. We took her to the vet that night now she is home in a splint and has 3 layers of stitches. I’m just wondering is there anything else I can do to comfort her? She can barely get around and we have to help her lie down on her bed. We are giving her the prescribed antibiotics and pain meds but she seems to not be getting any comfort. I hate to just hear her cry but I don’t know what to do.

Yesterday I took my dogs to the park. I was sitting on the floor holding my 2 month old chihuahua. She jumped out from my arms and fell on the floor and started to cry alot. As i went to pick her up she tried getting up on her own and i noticed she wasnt putting any pressure on her left front leg. I looked at her leg and didnt notice anything unusual. We took her home and she was still limping. I touched her leg to see if she would flinch or act in pain and nothing but i did noticed like a bump on her “forearm” amd she still wont completley put pressure on her leg and there was never any swelling. Do you think it is broken?
Hi Monica,
If your dog is still limping, I would see your vet and have x-rays taken if needed.

Hi, Dr. Carol. My dog broke her front left leg yesterday. We took her to a clinic and they said a plate needed to be put in after examinging x-rays. She has two clean breaks. One in the Radius and one in the Ulna. Both ofset yet very close to the ankle. They said it was a very clean break but straight through both bones. Do you think placing the plate is necessary? Or would a firm brace or splint for a period of time suffice as costs for placing the plate are staggering. Thank you.
Hi Lola,
I am sorry to hear about your dog and glad to help.
I can review the xrays if you email them to me at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com, then we can discuss and I can offer you exact suggestions with relevant costs to fix this. You can call my veterinary office toll free at 1-866-372-2765.
The fact that your dog is small and the fractures are “clean is good
Because they are offset, they must be re-aligned, which is done manually and this may or may not require an intramedullary pin with some wires. Either way, once they are aligned either an IM Pin and/or proper casting should correct this and no plates are not necessary according to what you are sharing.
Cost wise this should be less than $1000.00 to correct, even less if IM pins are not needed.
We also have a couple excellent natural supplements: Paaws Pet Vitamins and Hip & Joint Natural Dog Arthritis Supplement, available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com which have helped many dogs similar to yours to speed healing, reduce pain and discomfort and
boost internal immunity.

Ps forgot to mention she is a small dog only about 3.4 kgs. Italian greyhound mix. Thanks.
Thank you for the reply. We decided to go ahead with the surgery and had the plates put in. We had a few consultations all saying it was a necessity.
She is recovering and has a cone to prevent her from biting out her stitches, but my concern is the swelling. We were given antibiotics as well as some pain killers and a liquid pain killer with an anti-inflammatory, it’s been only just past 24 hours since the surgery but her paw is very swollen and even looks red and seems to be blistering between the toes. Is this normal?
Hi Lola,
No this is not normal and I would go back to the vet ASAP today and get this corrected before it creates further problems.
Something, perhaps a splint/cast/ wrap, dressing is too tight and it is cutting off the blood flow [circulation] to her toes.
This must be fixed immediately!!

hey Dr., My dog broke her leg ( lower part(foot))a few months back , the vet put a cast on it and removed after 2 weeks , the fracture healed he said , but sometimes when we take her out for exercise , she starts limping and lefts her once broken foot up . i get really worried , is there anything i can do to make her once broken leg stronger ??and does what she does mean something we don’t know about ??
Thank you
Juode
Hi Juode,
Please take your dog back to the vet and have the leg re-xrayed as if its healed she should be walking normally not limping
It sounds like they removed the cast too soon
I am glad to review the xrays and we can discuss
Please feel free to call my veterinary office

Sorry forgot to mention , she’s a medium size dog .
Hi Juode
The smaller her size the quicker she should heal
Dr Carol
Hi Dr Carol,
My dog got her both front leg broken (radius and ulna) and the day after we took her to the vet and they put bandages and she was like that for 2 days and then we brought her back to the vet and a cast was put and we were told to wait for 45 days. After 45 days, we went back to the vet and the cast on one of the two legs was removed (the less worse one).It was a success, the vet told that it was healing. The vet then told us to wait 10-15 days before removing the cast on the other leg. When removing the cast, the vet told us that there were some injuries at the paw and we need to clean it with boiled salt water and then with betadine gel.
She is a female, about 3 yrs old and medium sized.
-What is the chance that the other leg will heal?
-Can i use the Symphytum 30c and Calcarea Fluorica at this point of time? Will it ameliorate its condition? If yes, what is the prescription?
By the way, we haven’t done any x-ray but the leg really seemed to healed.
Is there still risk of infection on the other cast? and what are the symptoms of infection?
Thanks for the support
Adarsh Ramchurun
Hi Adarsh,
I am sorry to hear about your dog and glad to help.
My suggestion is to have x-rays taken of both front legs so that the healing process can be properly evaluated,
and you and your vet can then decide which supplements are best to promote further healing.
Chances are the 2nd leg will heal as did the 1st leg but again x-rays validate that.
I am glad to review the x-rays if you email them to me at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com and then can offer further suggestions.
Using the homeopathic meds should be fine, again I need to know more about your dog such as body weight and breed
to make specific suggestions for medication dosages.
Be sure there is no odor coming from the cast-that is a sign of infection and also be sure he leg above and below the cast is not swollen-if the cast is applied too tightly the leg will swell either above and/or below the cast which is also not good.
Feel free to contact our veterinary office toll free at 1-866-372-2765 as we are glad to discuss.
I hope this information is somewhat helpful
Thank you
DR Carol
Hi Dr Carol,
Thanks for the quick reply
I will try to get the x-ray done. Tonight is the first night for my dog without her one of the cast, do you have any advice for me?
Breed: She’s a hybrid German shepherd
Weight: About 22 kg (49 lb)
Thanks for giving me hope, I hope the second leg will be the same as the first.
Till now, there was no odor coming from the cast and it is not swollen above leg but below I can’t check it as the cast completely covers it till the bottom of the leg.
I am going to buy the homeopathic meds tomorrow itself.
Adarsh
Hi Adarsh,
Just keep her quiet-perhaps confined to 1 room and keep an eye on her and she should be fine
Thank you
Dr Carol
Ok, and for the medication dosage of the Symphytum and Calcarea fluorica?
Thanks
Adarsh
Hi Adarsh,
Please feel free to contact our veterinary office for specific dosages

Hi Dr Carol,
Its been 5 days since we removed one of the cast and I am a bit worried now.
First thing, the leg with the cast is starting to tremble, I think its a muscle spasm/tremor. My dog is whining whenever she moves the leg with the cast. What should I do? There are still 10 more days before we remove it.
And second, the other leg, she is not using it that much but she will stand on it sometimes and do some small moves like while pooping.
Whats worrying is the muscle tremor/spasm which makes her very uncomfortable and she starts whining and search for a good position to sleep.
Help please?
Thanks
Hi Cooling5,
I am sorry to hear about your dog’s legs and glad to help.
I would go back to your vet and have both legs re-xrayed as this is not correct at all.
I am glad to review the x-rays and also to offer further suggestions.

Hi Dr. Carol,
I need an advise… one of my puppys had his little paw smashed by the dog house. His mom accidently moved her dog house and we believe he was there for a couple of hours. He just had it swollen, so i put some ice. The following day he was fine, he would step on it. Just right now I went to check on them and saw his hand was coming off. I can see his little bones so he has a big laceration. I just don’t know what to do because I don’t have money to take him to the vet… plus there is no vet that is open 24 hrs… what can I do!!! Please help… I dont want for him to get an infeccion. I believe maybe the mom stepped on him… I really don’t know how it happened!
Dear Cris,
Please take your puppy to the vet ASAP!
Once this is diagnosed and sutured if I can help please give us a call

Dr. Carol,
I have a 13 pound Chinese Crested who decided it’d be a good idea to jump onto couch, missed and began screaming. I got him to calm down and now I’m seeing (about 3 hours later) slight bruising on his back right leg, above paw (on front) and under the”elbow” part. He won’t put pressure on it, so I stabilized it. The EVet wants 500 just to see him and I just don’t have that money right now.Any advice?
Hi Cjesteves,
I am sorry to hear about your dog and glad to help.
If he is still sore I would take him to the vet and if needed you might find another vet with better pricing.
Once you have a diagnosis, please feel free to call as I am glad to discuss

Hi Dr. Carol,
I have a Bichon Frise (approx 9.5yrs old). As I was petting him I felt something hard stuck behind his knee (right by the joint) I thought I’d remove it once I bathed him and when I did I was surprised to see that it was something protruding from within! It felt like a piece of cartilage: dark, hard but able to bend and thinned out at the pointy end. He wasn’t in pain as I touched it, he hasn’t been limping and I haven’t seen him licking that area either. I’m dumb-founded by this. His mobility has been great as usual (actually ran along side of me today!). What do you think this could possibly be? It starts out round right from his joint area. Please help. Thank you!
Hi Anacoupons,
I am puzzled by this as well.
Certainly your vet can take a look and because its protruding this is probably your quickest, best and safest solution.
I am glad to take a look as well if you can email me a pic of this at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com and will do my best to try to figure out what it might be.
Please keep me posted

Hi, I own a Rottweiler puppy he is 6 months old and weighs 84.6lbs. he comes from a very good bloodline and has great bone structure and very large joints. But about 3 weeks ago he fell playing with my other dog and he yelped and twisted his right lower elbow. I have been keeping him off of it not knowing if its a fracture or just a sprang but I took him to the vet and they took x-rays and said it was probably fractured. The told me that I need to take him to a specialist and he’ll probably need surgery. They said he might have broken off a piece of cartilage and its moving around. The thing is though is that he acts like it doesn’t bother him at all. The only time he limps even a little is when he first wakes up. What does this mean? Does it mean that it is healing? Or should I give him the surgery? I want to make sure it’s something serious before paying a lot of money that I really don’t have to a specialist if its going to heal and he’ll be without pain throughout his life.
Hi Nisha,
Regarding your dog’s possible elbow fracture, I am glad to review the x-rays and offer my suggestions as far as
confirmation that there is a fracture as well as what type of fixation, if any, is needed.
The fact that your dog does not seem to be bothered by this is a very promising sign as perhaps nothing is needed.
You always need to verify the fracture exists before submitting your dog to any type of operation, regardless of cost!
You can email the x-rays to me directly at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com.

Hi Dr Carol,
I am praying you can help me. My Golden Retriever injured her foot while running in the yard. I cannot say for certain how it happened but I believe she slipped on wet grass. She hobbled on 3 legs and I took her to our vet within a few hours. They did xrays of her hip and leg to rule out dislocation but did not xray her foot. I thought it was strange they didn’t xray the area that seemed to be affected. My vet said she thought my dog may have ruptured her CCL even though #1, she was unable to perform the “drawer test” as my dog was too tense and #2, her foot seemed to be visibly swollen. Although she agreed the foot looked swollen she thought we should put her on 10 days of Metacam, strict rest other than potty breaks and then have her re-checked for the drawer test. It has only been 5 days but I’m not really seeing much improvement. Her foot still looks swollen to me and she is bearing very little weight on it. I have called the vet and rescheduled our follow up for tomorrow but I’m really worried something might be getting missed with her foot. Also, I have heard there is a “sit test” for CCL injuries where the dog sits off to the side. My dog is not doing this. She is sitting straight. Is it possible she may have a fracture in her foot? If so, what do we do to help her heal?
Hi Goldenluv66,
I am more than glad to help with your dogs problem.
If your dog’s foot is still swollen and bothering her, please see your vet and if needed get an x-ray to rule out any fractures, etc.
Rupturing or more realistically tearing a ligament in her hind leg knee, which is also called the stifle is possible, with or without a foot injury.
If the CCL, also called the ACL ligament is completely ruptured your dog would not be able to put any weight on that leg at all-she would carry it in the air.
With ACL/CCL tears dogs usually hold the affected hind leg up in the air for 2-3 days, start toe touching for a day or two, then return to using the hind leg until it recurs again.
These dog with CCL/ACL ligament tears are generally, bright, alert, eating and acting normally, just not putting weight on the affected hind leg.
We have had excellent results and been able to avoid surgery using 2 natural supplements.
These 2 supplements have proven to help these dogs with torn, loose stifle ligaments to return to using the leg much more quickly and also helps to prevent recurrences which are VERY common.
Paaws Pet Vitamins along with the Dog Hip & Joint Natural Arthritis Supplement, both available at chagrinfallspetclinic.com.
Please feel free to call, I am glad to discuss, review x-rays, etc.
I hope this information is somewhat helpful

hey dr.Carol,
my 6yr old dog has fractured his leg.. he is now having a plaster on his defected leg. I wanted to know can I take my dog for a walk after his meal as he has plastered his leg I am afraid if he stands or walk wil that affect his defected leg? I am worried if I can take him on a walk or not! plz answer my query..
Hi Trish,
Generally you need to restrict your dogs activity so the fracture can heal.
Leash walks for elimination are usually fine but please 1st check with your vet just to be sure
Good Luck
Dr Carol
I’m fostering a small pitbull mix that had a fractured, but not displaced, front left ulna. Her first splint came off within a couple days from banging it on the wire crate I put her in to restrict her movement. The second splint was fine for a week, but was replaced during her spay last week. That splint started to slip down her leg so it was two inches past her toes. It started to stink badly, so I took it off the night before last. She had large raw splotches that I cleaned and put wound spray on. She has not jumped on anything, we have no stairs, or walks more than going to the potty and back. (I have boxes on all the furniture to block her from climbing on anything. I keep all bedroom doors closed.). Today the vet said the fracture is worse! It had started to heal (callous?) but is now somewhat splintered. I have no idea what she could have done other than bang on the door when I leave in the morning for work. I quit crating her when I took the last slipped splint off for fear she would hurt herself on the wire. I feel terrible! I am going to take her to work to keep her anxiety down, but i can’t be with her all the time. What else can I do? I’m so sad for her! Vet said it’s probably another 6-8 weeks now after 3 weeks already! Should i get a second opinion? Tempted to ask to adopt her so i can take her to have it surgically repaired. (She is currently getting care at the local shelter. They don’t do surgery there.). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi
We adopted a chihuahua mix from a shelter in January. Less than a week later she was running around and jumping (having fun) when she broke her front leg. It was broken in the lower part not involving a joint, both the Ulna and the Radius. We took her to the Vet right away where they x-rayed her leg and explained our options of either splinting or surgery. We cannot afford that surgery and the vet said she felt it would heal alright if splinted. She is doing well (I believe). The first vet had splinted it too short and the wrap kept slipping off .. we changed vets to a more experienced one who put the hard splint longer up her leg and the wrap went over her little elbow so as to secure it. … long story short … my question, as I read so much on the darned internet … when the splint is removed am I to be concerned that it didn’t heal properly. So many sites say that the smaller dogs legs don’t respond well to splinting and that they should be pinned. She is a long legged variety and has thin legs. We are so concerned for her future. She has been wrapped almost 12 weeks now (with regular changes of the wrap by the Vet)and the current x-rays show the Radius healing up nicely (I think) but the Ulna not so much … the Vet said that the ulna may never heal ????
We cannot afford regular leg fractures …. we love the little girl but are wondering if we made the right choice. Years ago I never heard of surgery for a broken dog leg ?!
Hi Deborah,
I am sorry to hear about your dog and glad to help.
If you can email the xrays to us at drcarol@chagrinfallspetclinic.com we are glad to review them and offer specific suggestions
It sounds like the radius is healing but not the ulna in which case an intramedullaty pin can be placed in the ulna so it heals as well

Hi Dr Carol,
One of my German Shepherds has been limping on her front paw for about 3 months now. She tore a nail off and we thought it had got infected. Our vet believed it to be Onychorrhexis.
Well, she has taken almost 6 weeks of antibiotics and she is not any better, she has become worse. Anytime she jumps, she is holding her paw up. She is now limiting her potty times. She will refuse to go out as much. She is no longer sleeping on the bed with me. If she tries to play with our 2 year old Shepherd, she is limping horribly. I could go on and on about how she has changed.
Our vet cannot get her in until Wednesday this next week and I do not know what to do to make her more comfortable. And, I am concerned about what is wrong. She is an extremely athletic dog and has a very high tolerance to pain. Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks!
Hello Dr. Carol,
I have a 6 month old mixed breed American Eskimo/Bishon Frise. Yesterday, we took him to Emergency Vet hospital because he fell on his left hind leg and he was crying very loudly when it happened. Within the hour i took him to the hospital where they had to mildly sedate him to get the x-ray done. The result is he has a fracture on his fibula on his left hind leg. He was given Tramadol and Metacam for pain and inflammation. They sent him home and just told him to rest for the next 4 weeks. Is there anything else that i can do to make him feel more comfortable or at least speed the healing. How about giving him food with calcium?
Concerned owner of Maximus. 🙁
I have a shorkie,( yorkie/shih-zhu) and only 10 pounds. He was hit and broke one of hind legs last month. I’ve been seeing lots of improve and I spot him trying to walk but still can’t yet. Is it safe to let him heal on his own? I cannot afford a vet.
Hello Dr Carol,
I am writing to you with great hopes!! I am in India, where we look after some street dogs. Last night, one of them got badly hit by a car. We immediately took him to vet, who told us that his lower abdomen is completely damaged as hit back bone is been hit. He told us that there is no movement in his back legs and that he will not be able to walk again and paralyzed from bottom forever!! He is in pain, but we are taking care of him..however, vet told us two options: 1/ to put him down as he will suffer in his own body!! or to see till when he can carry on!!
we do not want to put him down, but when we see his suffering and that how much he wants to run again and try to walk we are left half hearted!!! pls pls pls advice what would be the best in the interest of the dog!!!
Thank you!!
Hello Dr. Carol,
I have a 14 week old Rott / Australian Shepherd mix (Hendrix). He broke his leg & we took him to our vet today. She took x-rays & the very end of the bone is broke off on the rear leg. This involves his growth plate. She put on a temporary cast & sent him home with us till Monday morning, when we are taking him back to discuss options as to what to do with his leg. Since this involves the tendon & the growth plate being attached in this joint in between the lower part of the leg & hip bone we are extremely concerned with how he will heal up & if he will be able to walk correctly after surgery. With him being so young we are extremely concerned with his healing. We also have his brother & sister. They get very rambunctious & play pretty rough. He weighs 29 pounds & his health is excellent. We give them supplements, they get taken for a run 2 to 3 times a day for no less than 20 minutes each time. What are the odds of him having a compete recovery? Is he more likely to have a game leg for the rest of his life?
Chris
I am sorry to hear about your dogs broken leg and glad to help. If you are able to email us a copy of your dogs x-rays from a CD, Dr Carol can review the fracture and recommend the best method of fixation and answer all your questions. Because your dog is young and doesn’t weigh much, he should heal well and be able to use his leg normally upon recovery. His youth benefits his body’s ability to heal and he will not have game leg for life. Please feel free to call our veterinary office toll free at 866-372-2765 if you’d like discuss this with myself,

I have a 14 yr old black lab that has seriously injured her front paw. She has had osteomyelitis in the past as well as cancer on the other foot. A toe was removed 2 years ago. She recovered nicely. She has several lipoma rumors and lumps and bumps every where. She is a little arthritic. She is like a little old lady. She eats, sleeps, goes out to do her business’s, comes back in and sleeps. Most days I need to encourage her to eat. Other than that she is in great spirits. She was getting off the couch last night and fell forward and hurt the front paw. She is unable to get up from a lying position on her own. It is Sunday so I need to wait for my vet to get in. Is there any way to stabilize her leg? Right now she looks pretty mamed. The paw/leg that is injured is kinda curled in. She puts absolutely no pressure on it. She did whimper, is there anything I can give her for pain until I see the vet later on today?
Michael, I understand wanting to find over the counter meds to help relieve your dogs discomfort however my suggestion would be to allow your dog to rest quietly, provide her with food and water and be sure she is comfortable. If you can provide her with something soft and preferably padded to lie on that is helpful for proper blood circulation. If you get a couple large towels you can place 1 behind her front legs and the 2nd in front of her hind legs, then use them as a sling to get her up and down so she can eliminate, etc. If she wants to lie on 1 side or the other, turning her from side to side every ~4 hours again helps to maintain normal circulation. If she is fussy about eating, try offering her a bowl of warm chicken noodle soup.
It’s nutritious and is a completely balanced meal most dogs enjoy. If I can help you after you see your veterinarian, please don’t hesitate to contact my veterinary office toll free at 866-372-2765.
I hope this information is somewhat helpful. Best Wishes, Dr Carol
Dr Carol,
I have a 15 week old shiba inu who broker her hind leg at 11 weeks. ER vet did X-rays, clean break, no displacement. She wore splints for 4 weeks. Today they removed it, and instead of putting new one on they checked her and suggested a X-ray because she didn’t mind the check up. X-Ray showed a healed break, although leg looks like it healed a bit crooked. Not an hour later she moved a little fast and cried out and now won’t put pressure on leg. Can it have rebroke? Or is it just awkward for her still? I am keeping her confined although not hard, she doesn’t want to move around much.
Should I give it a day and then take her back to vet?
Thanks

We have a chocolate 3yr old lab named Ruger. On Tuesday February 10th he was hit by a commercial truck on the highway. When we picked him up from the road he only had blood on his mouth, and some scratches. We drove about an hour to get to the vet clinic. Once we get to the vet, the dog was in shock…they had to administer iboprufen, and antibiotics. The vet cleaned up the wounds, and stared to make a physicall exam. Minutes later the dog entered in a crisis, his heart beats were to high and his temperature was to low so they had to put him to sleep. The first 24 hrs they kept him on fluids like glucose. When they stabilized him, they took some
Xrays…they have only found a broken elbow on his right hand and they would like to put some nails on. On the other hand, which is the left hand he appears to not have sensibility at all. The dog will not stand, he eats and drinks water but has not stand. But he tries to. He has been improving, his reflexes appear to be normal. On Saturday Feb 14, he almost ate completly standing.
We will appreciatte your opinion, thank you
Please give us a call at 440-247-5901, we have many things to help you, and it would be our pleasure.
I have a 2 1/2 year old beagle she broke her front right elbow and had a couple of screws and 2 bands placed to repair the break. It has been 9 weeks since her surgery, but she still will not put much weight on that leg. When she walks she holds it up. Should I contact the surgeon or just give it more time? Is this normal?
Hi Rhonda,
Please contact your veterinarian as this does not sound right to me either.

Dear Dr. Carol,
Just over this weekend, our neighbor’s dog was hit and run over a van and his right hind leg was severely injured. The owner doesn’t have enough money to see the vet, so we step in for some help. The vet did 3 x-rays, and suggested that the leg should be amputated. They quote around $340 – $460 packaged for the surgery but sadly, even us will have hard time raising the money for it. After a day of confinement with Fluid Therapy and other injected medications, we brought him home and he seems to improve gradually by means of standing up normally and walking. He also eats and drinks normal. His broken leg has been folded as stayed as that. They are just times when he shortly scream in pain when it is accidentally hard-touched or hit. He can also rest normally lying with the side of it,maybe quite relieved because of take home oral medications from the vet, but we know he is still in pain even to this day.. I am planning to reach out for help to some local Animal Welfare NGO for the funds of surgery but I know that will take time, given that they are also into helping other abused, strayed and much worser animal cases now. My question is, what if the broken leg will not be amputated at all? What are the complications the dog will face? is there a possibility to live normal without the surgery? I know that there will be risk of infections, but will the help of medications for some time (esp antibiotic) will gradually remove the pain and improve to as just having a simple useless leg? Thank you and God Bless you!

Hello,
I have a 10 month old Maltipoo, she weights about 7.5 lbs. This past Sunday (6 days ago) she broke 2 toes on her right back leg. We took her to the vet immediately and there was x-rays done to determine the break. The break is that the front tip of her toes and it was a clean break. The vet said that the bones are broken but still touching and there is no need to splint it. She was sent home with pain meds and we were told to have x-rays done in about 4 weeks to look at the break again. My question is how long does it take for something like this to heal, on average? We are currently letting her rest and only taking her outside for potty breaks so that she does not aggravate the toe. She is currently waking with the back leg up. Once her toe is healed, will her instincts kick in to tell her that she should walk on on all fours. Should we keep her from walking on it for all 4 weeks?
Thanks
Hi KLK,
I am sorry to hear about your dog and glad to help.
Generally minor toe fractures in a small, young, healthy dog like yours will heal in ~4-8 weeks
I would restrict her exercise but would not crate or kennel her for 4 weeks.
Instead try nice leisurely walks. Adding in a good natural supplement to boost healing is a smart idea.
We use the natural Dog Hip & Joint formula for our canine patients suffering from bone fractures and have excellent results.
Your dog can take 1/2 tablet twice a day of the above formula.
Note: She may begin using all 4 legs once her toes healed or if not her hind knee ACL ligaments may be partially torn or loose.
If she does have an ACL issue I am glad to offer my suggestions as well.
Please keep me posted and if necessary give our veterinary clinic a call toll free at 866-372-2765 [-866-DR-CAROL] and we can discuss.
Thank you,
Dr. Carol
Do you still give advice?
Hello it’s me, I am also visiting this site daily, this
web site is truly nice and the people are really sharing nice thoughts.
I appreciate the advice you shared about immobilizing a dog’s leg can help prevent additional injuries when the bone is broken. I think my dog broke its leg during a freak accident that occurred during our jog this morning. It would probably be a good idea for me to immobilize my dog’s leg before I take him to the vet this afternoon.
