Combating pet fleas can be a nightmare for dog owners. Here are a few of Dr. Carol’s tried and true home remedies for dog fleas.
Pet owners might start by buying a flea comb then use it daily to help remove fleas from their dog’s coat.
Bathing your canine with a natural pet flea shampoo is the next step.
Recipe for Making Natural Dog Flea Shampoo:
Start for example with a pint of organic oatmeal shampoo, and then add 2 tablespoons of either Neem or Tea Tree Oil shake well and begin bathing.
Pets may be bathed weekly or as needed.
Be sure to toss your pet’s bedding into the washer as well the same day. Vacuum your house as often as needed and for vacuums with a bag, dispose of the bag to prevent fleas and flea eggs from hatching out inside of the bag.
TIP: Do not put your pet’s flea collar in your vacuum bag as they emit toxic fumes.
TIP: Beware of pet supplements containing Brewer’s Yeast!
Brewer’s Yeast is an inexpensive source of B-Vitamins.
Brewers Yeast is also a leading cause of itching and pet allergies in dogs and cats.

Make a holistic, herbal pet anti-itching home remedy by taking 5 drops of licorice, 5 drops of dandelion root and 5 drops of cat’s claw. Mix all three together and give 5 drops of the final solution to your canine by mouth, once daily for 14 days in a row.
What’s the Best Way to Prevent Fleas in My Yard?
Diatomaceous earth, which consists of fossilized algae, kills fleas by causing them to dehydrate. Be sure to purchase the natural diatomaceous earth for example from a gardening center as opposed to the kind used in swimming pools which contains toxic chemicals.
Pet owners may spread diatomaceous earth around the perimeter of their home to reduce the flea population in their yards. Note that today some pet owners give the diatomaceous earth to their canines by mouth, however this veterinarian and author does not recommend this method.
What Natural Flea Remedies are Effective and Safe to use inside My Home?
Borax is available in the laundry detergent section of most grocery stores for about five bucks a box. It’s natural and offers effective flea prevention inside your home that lasts about one year.
How Does Licorice Help Dogs Stop Itching?
Licorice is actually a form of Cortisone. Cortisone relieves skin irritation and reduces the urge to itch. Since cortisone is a type of steroid, it’s important to talk to your veterinarian before giving these products to your dog to prevent any potential cross reactions and/or side effects with any other medications your pet may be taking.
How Do You Give Dogs These Holistic Flea Remedies?
Pet owners can mix them with their dog’s food and/or water or place them directly into their canine’s mouth. The problem with most of these holistic, herbal remedies is TASTE! To get around this issue, it’s best to buy the herbs in liquid, rather than in powdered form and disguise the taste by mixing them with something yummy your dog loves such as baby food, clam juice or chicken broth.
